Ursula Frayne Catholic College – Year 5 Parent Handbook 2020

Welcome to the 2020 school year! Together, in partnership with you and your child, it is our hope to make
2020 the most fulfilling school year for the students with many exciting learning opportunities and events
ahead.

AIMS FOR YEAR FIVE
In Year 5, it is our aim that the students:

 develop a capacity to be autonomous learners.
 are able to apply knowledge, skills and understandings to real life contexts.
     develop a positive self-image and a life-long love of learning

Simply put, our goal is to help your child reach their goal.

IMPORTANT ROUTINES AND PROCEDURES
School Hours
All students should be at school by 8.25am and be ready to begin the day by 8.40am. This means that
all bags are unpacked, and all lunch orders placed in the class lunch basket. Please note the first bell of
the morning will go at 8.35am. Any student not present in class by 8.40am must report to the front
office to get a late note.

School concludes at 3.15pm except for Thursdays when it finishes at 2.25pm. Students must be
collected within 15 minutes of school finishing. If students need to leave earlier than this or for any part
of the day, a parent or guardian must collect the correct documentation from the school office and
hand it to the teacher before collecting their child.

Absences
If your child is absent from school, the school must be contacted first thing in the morning. This can be
done by directly emailing the school at absenteesprimary@ufcc.wa.edu.au which can be accessed via
the College website’s home page. Alternatively, a note must accompany him or her on the day he/she
returns to school. These notes can be found in the school diary.

Newsletters
School newsletters are emailed to parents on a Friday but can also be accessed from the College
website: www.ufcc.wa.edu.au/newsletter/

Uniform

Children are to wear their full school uniform on the days that they don’t have Sport or Fitness.

In Semester One the sport uniform will be worn:

CLASS SCHOOL UNIFORM SPORTS UNIFORM
5 Red and White Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
                        Friday

The school hat must be worn every day. The school has a ‘No Hat No Play’ policy that applies to outdoor
activities. Please ensure all items of clothing are labelled clearly.

                                                                                                        Page | 2

LEARNING AREAS
The children will be involved in activities in the following learning areas:

 Religious Education  Mathematics  English  Science  Humanities and Social Sciences 
 Technologies  Languages  The Arts  Health and Physical Education 

There will be assessments in all learning areas either by the classroom teacher or specialist teacher.

REPORTING
For Term One, work will be sent home for you to peruse with your child prior to the one-on-one parent
meetings held on Thursday 30 April.

In Term Three, parent teacher meetings will be held on Thursday 23 July, and all parents are invited to
attend.

In addition to the above, a summative report will be sent home at the end of each semester.

LIBRARY
All students require a library bag to borrow books from the school library. It is important that all books
that have been read are returned on the Friday of the same week. If your child would like the book
renewed, they can keep the book over the weekend and do so on the following Monday. Your child’s
library day during Semester One is:

CLASS LIBRARY BORROWING DAY

5 Red Monday

5 White Monday

Each year, books from the library are damaged or lost. Please discuss with your child the importance of
taking care of library books and returning them on time.

COMMUNICATION WITH THE TEACHER
All parents will be invited formally to meet with the classroom teacher on Thursday 11 April. Parents
are very welcome to come in and discuss their child’s education with the class teacher at other times
during the school year. If you would like to meet with the class teacher, please make contact via school
email. Every attempt will be made to schedule the meeting at a time convenient to you.

During the year, if you have any questions, please feel free to email the class teacher to seek
clarification.

JUNIOR SCHOOL ASSEMBLIES AND MASSES
Junior School assemblies and Masses are usually held on alternating Thursdays. Assemblies are held in
the school hall at 8:50am and Junior School Masses are held in Our Lady Help of Christians Church at
8.50am. Please check the school calendar for the dates of all Assemblies and Masses. Details regarding
the dates of class Masses and assemblies are published in the College newsletter early in Term One.

MASSES AND ASSEMBLIES 2020

Year 5 Red Assembly – 10 September
Year 5 White Assembly – 5 March

Year 5 Red and White Mass – 26 March
Year 5 Red and White Mass – 3 September

HOMEWORK AND DIARY USE
Homework is given out each week, and each child is taught how to plan his or her workload when the
homework is issued. In addition, students are to read at least 15 minutes every night. Homework and
information regarding school events are written daily in student diaries. Students will at times need
access to the internet to complete homework. If you have difficulties with this arrangement, please let
the classroom teacher know.

It is expected that students complete their homework to an acceptable standard. Incomplete
homework will involve the child completing the activity during a time out session or at home. It is
important that your child develops a regular routine for their homework. Should a child need an
extension on their homework, please email the class teacher to advise them.

Homework is an important part of a child’s education and parents can help by implementing the
following tips:
 The homework area should be clear of distractions.
 Ensure that stationery supplies and the internet are available.
 Homework should ideally be completed at a set time each day.
 Encourage and praise your child’s efforts and achievement.
 When helping your child, help with the process, but try to avoid giving direct answers.
 Parents should check, correct and discuss their child’s homework, ensuring that it is completed
        to a high standard.

MEDICATION
Wherever possible, medication needs to be self-administered by the child. Children administering
medication to themselves at school (with or without teacher support) must have a Medical
Authorisation Form completed by their parent/s at the beginning of the year or when the medication
is commenced. Medication must be kept by the teacher and not kept in the child’s school bag.

Should your child be on temporary medication, a note needs to be given to the class teacher
explaining what the medication is for, what it is and the details regarding its administration.

If your child requires a Ventolin puffer at school, please complete a Medical Plan that can be
obtained from the Front Office. Your child should keep the puffer with him or her during the day (if
required) and must not lend it to another child.
                                                                                               Page | 4

BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT PLAN
It is the right of every child to feel safe, secure and respected in their classroom. It is through this
security that a positive and productive learning environment is established. In Year 5, it is achieved
through the implementation of a positive reinforcement program in conjunction with a sanction for
inappropriate behaviour.

A common policy is followed in both classes. The following steps are put into action should
inappropriate behaviour occur.

 First offence- a verbal warning.
  Second offence – a visual warning.
  Third offence- Email notification.
 Severe Clause: Students are removed from the classroom and Head of Junior School or Assistant
Head of Junior School is notified.
 Letter of Concern: This is essentially a means of informing parents of a serious breach of the
behaviour code of the school. A Letter of Concern is given by the Head/Assistant Head of Junior
School in consultation with the teacher. In the event that a Letter of Concern is sent home,
parents need to contact the teacher concerned within 24 hours.
 If necessary, behaviour modification plans will be devised for particular students. The student,
parent and teacher will devise the plan collaboratively.

At the beginning of each day, each child begins with a clean slate.

CLASS RULES
Essentially class rules will reflect the following
  1. We follow instructions immediately.
  2. We communicate positively with others.
  3. We move around the classroom safely.
  4. We come to class prepared and on time.
  5. We keep our classroom clean and organised.

NATIONAL ASSESSMENT PROGRAM –
Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN)
Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 across Australia will sit the national tests in literacy and numeracy in May
2020. It will be carried out in the same week across all four-year groups. Testing will take place over
four days during the allotted two-week period: Tuesday 12 May – Thursday 21 May, with a catch-up
day scheduled for Friday 15 May. NAPLAN will assess:
         Reading
         Writing
 Language Conventions (including spelling, grammar and punctuation)
         Numeracy

Information will be reported back to students and parents later in the year.

                                                                                                        Page | 5

BISHOP’S RELIGIOUS LITERACY ASSESSMENT
Students in Years 3, 5 and 7 complete the Bishops’ Religious Literacy Assessment. This is a curriculum-
based assessment which reflects and supports the progressive nature of the K-12 Religious Education
Units.

It focuses on students’ ability to recall content about the Catholic religion and to assess students’
knowledge and understanding of Religious Education it does not measure students’ faith.

The intended purpose of the assessment is to provide individual schools with a snapshot of student
performance in Religious Education. Comparisons between students’ performance are provided on the
student and school reports.

2020 dates are to be confirmed.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT
Students will have access to support staff where additional assistance is required.

PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT
Parents are encouraged and welcomed to assist with the different activities that will occur throughout
the year. Notes will be sent home as the need arises.

BIG DAYS OUT
Year 5 students will participate in two days of outdoor education at Bickley Outdoor Recreation Camp. These
days are aimed at developing their leadership skills, collaborative skills and interpersonal relationships with
their peers.

This year, the two days took place on Thursday 6 and Friday 7 February.

MERCY LEADERSHIP DAY
Year 5 students will also participate in a Mercy Leadership Day. This day is designed to educate students
about the history of the Sisters of Mercy and Ursula Frayne as well as inspire them to form a deeper
connection to the Catholic Church.

This year, the Mercy Leadership Days will take place on Monday 10 (5 Red) and Tuesday 11 (5 White)
August.

More information will be provided closer to these dates.

                                                                                                        Page | 6
