3Business Challenge & Objectives
Degree planning is one of the biggest challenges in higher education. This is
especially important with required courses that are on the critical path of impacted
majors. If students receive a failing grade or drop out of these courses, it becomes
a critical issue to their success.
If we can identify these “bottleneck courses” ahead of time, we can be prepared to
either offer more sections or provide extra support around these courses to help
ensure on time to degree and better student outcomes.

UC San Diego partnered with SAP to design and
implement a new packaged solution called
Student Activity Hub.
The SAP Student Activity Hub is a native-HANA
application containing pre-defined data
structures, analytics/predictive frameworks, and
applications geared specifically for student
success.
UC San Diego feeds in 15 years of historical
student data as input into the Student Activity
Hub and the SAP solution helped produce
insights about which classes and sections are
potential bottlenecks.
Analysts at UC San Diego have developed
analytics and dashboards, using Tableau and
Cognos to easily visualize this information and
drill down to specific classes or student
populations.

UC San Diego offers multiple academic support and success programs to assist
students. These programs monitor the progress of students that have participated
in their program. Progress is defined by grades and attendance.
Each program would like to message participant students with information about
upcoming study sessions based on their grade trends. This allows UC San Diego to
nudge students in the right direction before they get too far off track.

UC San Diego partnered with SAP to design and implement a new packaged solution called
Student Activity Hub. The SAP Student Activity Hub is a native-HANA application containing pre-
defined data structures, analytics/predictive frameworks, and applications geared specifically for
student success.
For the purpose of optimizing academic support programs, UC San Digo was able to feed in 15
years of historical student data as input, and the SAP solution helped produce insights about
student progress down to the lowest level.
Central IT teams at UC San Diego have developed
standardized dashboards to allow analysts
and end users to easily visualize this information,
and then slice/dice down to specific classes or
student populations.
The next step being planned is for program
managers to be able to use hundreds of pre-
defined metrics about these students’
academic progress to target and nudge these
students.
UC San Diego has worked with SAP to design new standard applications called the Group Builder
and Message Builder, which are being rolled out now.
