Photographer shoots for the stars
MATT BROWN

The star cluster Matariki, also
known as the Pleiades, the seven
sisters and Subaru signals the
beginning of the Māori new year.
As a part of Picton’s first ever
Matariki festival, wildlife and
night sky photographer Tamzin
Henderson is running a pho-
tography class teaching the tech-
nique of long-exposure shots.
‘‘It’s what I do for fun. I like to
push boundaries,’’ Henderson
said.
    A photographer for four
years, Henderson recently
returned to Marlborough to take
over the family business with
her sister, Lana.
    The business, Henderson’s, is
a boat chandlery and fishing
supplies shop. It should come as
no surprise, then, that her
passion is the ocean.
    Specialising in wildlife pho-
tography, she recently travelled
halfway to Antarctica in her
search of the perfect shot. After
seeing a fishing boat on TV3’s
Ocean Bounty, Henderson
decided she wanted to go along
for the trip.
    ‘‘I basically Facebook stalked
them,’’ she said. ‘‘I asked if they
