PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
While we can never be quite certain that the groundhog will see his shadow on February 2nd, we
do know that the Club has reopened after its normal two-week January break.
I am pleased to announce that the Board has authorized two previously approved projects to
move forward in 2021. The first project is the long-awaited lifting of the clay tennis courts. While
the hard courts were resurfaced in 2016, the clay tennis courts have never been lifted in over 30
years. With the increased amount of play; from League teams to junior programs to holiday round
robins, this project is long overdue. To give you a better perspective, close to 60 tons of clay will
be brought in to complete the project. While we have been put on the vendor’s spring schedule,
the timing of completion is totally weather dependent.

Kiki Matthews The second project that we are excited to announce is the construction of a set of Forward Tees
on the golf course. This addition will better enable golfers of any age to play from a set of tees
best suited to their driving distance. It will allow players to play faster, have more fun, and
increase the likelihood that they will continue to play. Forward Tees will be constructed on the majority of holes. Work will
commence in the spring with the hope that the tees should be playable by July 4th. Please keep in mind that not only will
there be new colors for each set of markers but also a new scorecard covering each of these USGA rated tees once this
project is completed.
I want to thank you in advance for your support of these two projects. Please keep in mind that as these get underway,
your usual routines may be temporarily interrupted; but in the end, both will be well worth it.

MANAGER’S MESSAGE
A year after first hearing the word coronavirus, we, and I mean all of us, have learned how to
adapt, at least temporarily, to new ways of life. The governor shut the state down on St. Patrick’s
Day last year but by March 17, most people had already significantly changed their patterns. A
year later we have all been through so much and every day I’m talking with Members who’ve just
been vaccinated. It’s almost over. Right?
As the Club staff and I and plan for 2021, we still don’t know how we will phase out of Covid
conditions. But a few things we know for certain: golf, pool, tennis, to-go food, and outdoor dining
will all do well in 2021. So, we are planning around those certainties and staying flexible about
adding Grill dinner, Clubhouse lunch and group events. I think by summer we might be pretty
close to normal- a new normal. But we still don’t know what the new normal will look like. We also
Anthony Chelena know that last year we really, really enjoyed the space under the tent and we want to somehow
continue that style of service. We are working on ways to make it a permanent offering.
The CARES Act of 2020 was helpful to the Club and we think the stimulus plan passed at year end will be helpful as
well. But the most important stimulus our Club needs every year is new Members who join us to replace those who leave
the Club- usually due to age. And last year was very good in this category too. Thank you to all the Members who have
sponsored a new Member in the last year and welcome to our newest Members. With your help, I think the positive
momentum will continue in 2021.

limited to the first 48 entries in order of POSTMARK DATES. No entries will be accepted with
postmarks prior to April 1st. If more than 48 teams enter, then the teams with the highest

HIGH SCHOOL AND MIDDLE SCHOOL GOLF
We are proud to host many middle/high school golf practices and matches during the spring. We
Jay King are always trying to limit the amount of interference with our Member play and take many steps
like having the juniors step aside during practices to allow our Members to play through. It is very
important during this time of season to call and schedule your tee times so you are not surprised when you get here.
HOW HEAVY IS YOUR GOLF BAG?
Most of us who store our golf bags in club storage are
fortunate to not have to load or unload our golf bags anymore
when we go out to play. With this service available many
people have not lifted their own golf bags in a while. From the
weight of some of the bags I would say that many of us have
more stuff than we need in them. One rainy day I wanted to
check the weight of some of the golf bags in storage, and what
I found was that our Member’s bags ranged in weight from
13-36 pounds for the ladies, and from 19-28 pounds for the
men. The lightest bags in both categories are from
players who walk and carry their golf bags when they play.
The average weight of our golf staff’s golf bags is 25 lbs. I was
talking with one of our Members (who’s bag was 38 lbs) and
told him of this article I was writing. He went through his bag
and found 108 golf balls in his bag. He cleaned out 80 balls
and now his bag weighs 26.5 lbs. Next time you are out to
play, check your golf bag and see what all is in there. You may
be surprised how many golf balls are actually in your bag or
you may even find some items that you forgot you had.

        PGA JUNIOR LEAGUE

Club boys and girls ages 13 and under. Our PGA Junior League season will begin with practices in
early April. Look for emails in February for sign up instructions for our PGA Junior League.

ON THE GREEN
February is the third and last month of meteorological winter, which means spring is right around
the corner. I feel as if spring sneaks up earlier and earlier each year, and it’s time for our
                       department to prepare.
This month our staff will be focusing our attention on two primary projects; adding additional
drainage on the first hole and applying a pre-emergence herbicide to the golf course.
The landing area on the first hole is known to stay wet long after a rain event, primarily due to a
couple of springs located in the area. In 2016 the Club replaced two large drain lines, which
significantly helped the situation, and now we’re adding additional drainage to catch areas that
have continued to be a nuisance. Our second primary goal of the month is making our first
pre-emergence herbicide application. This application provides a barrier in the soil, keeping
   Craig Dejong
emerging weeds from breaking through, and will cover all turf areas except greens, roughly 75
                       acres.

The winter weather has given us a few great golf days and I’ve seen many of you taking
advantage of them. Thank you Barbara Clay who continues to organize Thursday fun golf and/or

Membership emails have gone out this month and I’m hoping that we will be able to grow our

The Member Guest Committee has met for the first time this season and we are pleased to

getting your paisleys and plaids, cowboy hats and boots ready for this fabulous event. More details to follow next month.
In addition, Megan has announced that our captains for this year’s Solheim will be Jill Robbins and Patti Brotherton. Our
theme is “South of the Border”. Jill’s team will be called the “Hot Tamales” and Patti’s team will be the “Fiery Chili
