“ORDINARY TIME” – Having finished the Christmas Season with last week’s celebration of the Baptism of the Lord, we begin the liturgical season called “Ordinary Time.” The term "Ordinary Time" may be misleading. In the context of the liturgical year the term "ordinary" does not mean "usual or average." Ordinary here means "not seasonal." Ordinary Time is that part of the Liturgical Year that lies outside the seasons of Lent-Easter and Advent-Christmas. In Ordinary Time, the Church celebrates the mystery of Christ not in one specific aspect but in all its aspects. The readings during the liturgies of Ordinary Time help to instruct us on how to live out our Christian faith in our daily lives. Ordinary Time in the Church's year occurs in two sections. The first part begins on the Monday following the Christmas season and lasts through the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, which begins Lent. Ordinary Time then resumes after the Easter Season, on the Monday after Pentecost, and continues through the summer until the beginning of Advent. The liturgical color of Ordinary Time is green which is a symbol of hope. A NEW VISION FOR OUR PARISH – 2021 marks an exciting new chapter in our community's history as we advance St. Andrew's "Our Home" Vision. This vision builds on the generosity of previous generations and aims to renew St. Andrew Church and Catholic School to respond to the future needs of our parish family. As we look to the future after the pandemic, we also take into account the incredible sacrifices and generosity of the past and must look to serve the needs of our community for generations to come. It is essential that we pass along a church and school to our children and grandchildren that are even more vibrant than the ones we have received! Over time, our community has grown and evolved. Today, our needs are different than they were when many of our buildings were first constructed. Our beautiful and historic church needs ongoing maintenance and repair and our school needs to be updated to provide the facilities that are necessary to provide our children with an integral Catholic education. The "Our Home" Vision aims to respond to the most pressing needs of our community so that we can continue to generously serve Pasadena. If you are registered in the parish, you should have received an email with more information about St. Andrew's "Our Home" Vision as well as a survey. I invite you to complete the survey so that we can collect as much feedback as possible to better understand the hopes, dreams and needs of our community. Please also familiarize yourself with this New Vision of the parish by checking the information found on our website: www.standrewpasadena.org SICK CALLS – As you can imagine with a large hospital such as Huntington Memorial within our parish boundaries, we get a lot of sick calls. The priests of the parish are happy to minister to the sick and it is one of the most important things that we do. However, since there are now only two of us (we had 4 when I was here before), we do have pressure on our availability. One of the simple ways to help is to make sure to call the parish for a sick call as soon as the person becomes seriously sick or enters the hospital. Rather often, people will wait until "the last minute" then call for the Last Rites. It is much better to call early so that we can properly plan on making the visit. It is also important for the person to receive the grace of the Sacrament of the Sick as soon as possible in order to be aided by the grace of the Sacrament for both physical and spiritual healing.
HAVE YOU DONE ADVANCE PLANNING? – Statistics show that a sizeable portion of people die without a Last Will and Testament each day. Many of those people have no heirs. As a result, their entire estate simply goes to the government. Sadly, many of those people were active parishioners in their local churches yet they never thought to leave behind a legacy which could keep their memory alive for many years to come. Ask yourself these questions: a) Have I written down my desires regarding my funeral? b) Have I written down how I want my money to be distributed upon my death? c) Have I remembered my parish in these plans? Our parish church is our second home. It is our spiritual home. We should provide for it so that it is here in the future to serve the generations which follow us. Remember: making no plan is actually making a decision to allow the state to make the decisions for you. Is that what you want or would you rather make these decisions yourself? While the parish’s ordinary expenses are paid from ordinary income (collection), large projects such as major repairs and improvements can only be paid from savings which accrue over time. These savings depend on the generosity of parishioners who leave their homes or other property to the church. Please prayerfully consider the parish when making your estate planning decisions. May God reward you for your generosity! ALTAR SERVERS – If you have a son in grades 3 and up, he is eligible to become an Altar Server. We will be having training for new Altar Servers this Sunday afternoon (Jan. 17) at 3:30 pm. as well as later this month. If you are interested in enrolling your son, please stop by the Pastoral Center to fill out a registration form within the next two weeks. Serving at the altar is a tremendous privilege for a child. It allows him to: - develop a closer relationship with God - have a better understanding of the Mass - learn reverence and discipline - learn to have a spirit of cooperation with others - get to know the parish priests and consider a priestly or Religious vocation - overcome shyness and fear of being “in front of others” The way I like to think of service at the altar is to remember the Last Supper. Our Lord was there with the Apostles. However, there were others who were there as well and who assisted: those who prepared the meal, those who served it and those who cleaned up. What a privilege it must have been for them to be so close to Our Lord and the Apostles and serve them on such a momentous night! In a similar way, our Altar Servers are those who serve Our Lord in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and are so close to the Holy of Holies. FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR: Second Sunday in Ordinary Time January 17, 2021 Omnis terra adoret te, Deus, et psallat tibi: psalmum dicat nomini tuo, Altissime. Ps. Iubilate Deo omnis terra, psalmum dicite nomini eius: date gloriam laudi eius. All the earth shall bow down before you, O God, and shall sing to you, shall sing to your name, O Most High! Maran atha! The Lord has come! Today is the Second Sunday in Ordinary Time. But what happened to the First Sunday in Ordinary Time? In the current Roman Calendar, the Christmas season ends with the feast of the Baptism of the Lord. The First Sunday in Ordinary time does not actually exist; its place is taken by the Feast of the Baptism, and the next day is Monday of the First Week of Ordinary Time. The introit for today, from Psalm 66 (given in the original Latin and an English translation at the beginning of this article), continues the themes of the latter part of the Christmas season: first Israel, in the persons of the shepherds; then the representatives of the gentiles (a term that means “the nations”) in the persons of the magi; and finally, all the earth, all nations, shall bow down before God, now enfleshed in Christ Jesus. As we begin Ordinary Time for year B, I’d like to offer a brief overview of the cycle of readings in the Lectionary. (Recall, the Lectionary is the ritual book proper to the lector, and contains selections of biblical readings assigned for every day of the liturgical year.) The Lectionary currently in use has three yearly cycles, labeled “A,” “B,” and “C.” The heart of the lectionary is the (mostly) sequential reading of a Gospel; for years A, B, and C, the Gospels are St. Matthew, St. Mark, and St. Luke, respectively. This liturgical year, which began on November 29, 2020, uses the Sunday readings for Year B, and so the Gospel according to St. Mark is the primary Gospel source. But since St. Mark’s Gospel is so short, interpolations from the Gospel according to St. John appear at various points in the year; the longest and most notable is the Bread of Life Discourse, a series of readings from John 6 that usually appears during August. But this Sunday, we also have a reading from St. John’s Gospel; next week, the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time, we will read the same story, but from St. Mark’s Gospel—this is the reason we will hear of the calling of the apostles two weeks in a row. The next five Sundays, we will hear about the beginning of Jesus’s public ministry, the calling of the apostles, and the establishment of his teaching authority. Though this time before Lent is no longer officially celebrated as Epiphanytide, we do see many of the themes of that former season and of the preceding Christmas season in the Gospel readings. In a few weeks, we will begin to read of Jesus’s divine manifestation in the healing of the sick. The first verse of this week’s entrance hymn Songs of Thankfulness and Praise recalls the events recounted in the Gospels of the last few weeks: the Nativity, the Epiphany, and the Baptism of the Lord. In this time of surging pandemic, it is perhaps good to note an interesting turn of phrase in the second verse: manifest in gracious will, ever making good from ill. The great saints and doctors of the Church, St. Augustine of Hippo and St. Thomas Aquinas agree that God permits evil only to bring about a greater good. In this, we may have hope: though this life may seem dark—perhaps more now than in recent memory—we have a great hope in God, who will ever bring good from ill.

“TIEMPO ORDINARIO” – Habiendo terminado el tiempo de Navidad con la celebración del Bautismo del Señor la semana pasada, comenzamos el tiempo litúrgico llamado “Tiempo Ordinario”. El término "Tiempo Ordinario" puede inducir a error. En el contexto del año litúrgico, el término "ordinario" no significa "habitual o promedio". Ordinario aquí significa "no estacional". El Tiempo Ordinario es la parte del Año Litúrgico que se encuentra fuera de las temporadas de Cuaresma-Pascua y Adviento-Navidad. En el Tiempo Ordinario, la Iglesia celebra el misterio de Cristo no en un aspecto específico sino en todos sus aspectos. MONAGUILLOS – Si tiene un hijo en los grados 3 en adelante, él es elegible para convertirse en un monagillo tendremos entrenamiento para nuevos monaguillos este domingo por la tarde (17 de enero) a las 3:30 pm. así como a finales de este mes. Si está interesado en inscribir a su hijo, pase por el Centro Pastoral para completar un formulario de inscripción dentro de las próximas dos semanas. Monaguillos es un gran privilegio para un niño. Le permite: - desarrollar una relación más cercana con Dios - tener una mejor comprensión de la Misa - aprender la reverencia y la disciplina - aprender a tener un espíritu de cooperación con los demás - conocer a los párrocos y considerar una vocación sacerdotal o religiosa - superar la timidez y el miedo a estar “frente a los demás” La forma en que me gusta pensar en el servicio en el altar es recordar la Última Cena. DEL DIRECTOR DE MUSICA: Segundo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario 17 de enero de 2021 Omnis terra adoret te, Deus, et psallat tibi: psalmum dicat nomini tuo, Altissime. PD. Iubilate Deo omnis terra, psalmum dicite nomini eius: fecha gloriam laudi eius. Toda la tierra se postrará ante ti, oh Dios, y cantará a ti, cantará a tu nombre, oh Altísimo! Maran atha! ¡El Señor ha venido! Hoy es el segundo domingo del tiempo ordinario. Pero, ¿qué pasó con el primer domingo del tiempo ordinario? En el Calendario Romano actual, la temporada navideña termina con la fiesta del Bautismo del Señor. El primer domingo del tiempo ordinario no existe realmente; su lugar lo ocupa la Fiesta del Bautismo, y el día siguiente es el Lunes de la Primera Semana del Tiempo Ordinario. El introito de hoy, del Salmo 66 (dado en el latín original y una traducción al inglés al comienzo de este artículo), continúa los temas de la última parte de la temporada navideña: primero Israel, en las personas de los pastores; luego los representantes de los gentiles (término que significa “las naciones”) en las personas de los magos; y finalmente, toda la tierra, todas las naciones, se postrarán ante Dios, ahora encarnado en Cristo Jesús. Al comenzar el Tiempo Ordinario para el año B, me gustaría ofrecer una breve descripción del ciclo de lecturas del Leccionario. (Recuerde, el Leccionario es el libro ritual propio del lector y contiene selecciones de lecturas bíblicas asignadas para cada día del año litúrgico). El Leccionario actualmente en uso tiene tres ciclos anuales, etiquetados como “A”, “B” y "C." El corazón del leccionario es la lectura (mayoritariamente) secuencial de un evangelio; para los años A, B y C, los Evangelios son San Mateo, San Marcos y San Lucas, respectivamente. Este año litúrgico, que comenzó el 29 de noviembre de 2020, utiliza las lecturas dominicales del Año B, por lo que el Evangelio según San Marcos es la principal fuente del Evangelio. Pero como el Evangelio de San Marcos es tan breve, las interpolaciones del Evangelio según San Juan aparecen en varios momentos del año; el más largo y notable es el Discurso del Pan de Vida, una serie de lecturas de Juan 6 que suele aparecer durante el mes de agosto. Pero este domingo también tenemos una lectura del Evangelio de San Juan; La semana que viene, el tercer domingo del tiempo ordinario, leeremos la misma historia, pero del Evangelio de San Marcos; esta es la razón por la que escucharemos del llamamiento de los apóstoles dos semanas seguidas. Los próximos cinco domingos, escucharemos sobre el comienzo del ministerio público de Jesús, el llamado de los apóstoles y el establecimiento de su autoridad de enseñanza. Aunque este tiempo antes de la Cuaresma ya no se celebra oficialmente como Epifanía, vemos muchos de los temas de esa temporada anterior y de la temporada navideña anterior en las lecturas del Evangelio. En unas semanas comenzaremos a leer sobre la manifestación divina de Jesús en la curación de los enfermos. El primer verso del himno de entrada de esta semana Cantos de Agradecimiento y Alabanza recuerda los eventos narrados en los Evangelios de las últimas semanas: la Natividad, la Epifanía y el Bautismo del Señor. En esta época de creciente pandemia, tal vez sea bueno notar un interesante giro de frase en el segundo verso: manifestar en voluntad amable, siempre resarcirse del mal. Los grandes santos y doctores de la Iglesia, San Agustín de Hipona y Santo Tomás de Aquino están de acuerdo en que Dios permite el mal solo para producir un bien mayor. En esto, podemos tener esperanza: aunque esta vida pueda parecer oscura, quizás más ahora que en la memoria reciente, tenemos una gran esperanza en Dios, que siempre traerá el bien del mal.
