Our Department takes pride in taking an educational approach that places students at its

Classes commence on Monday, 28th September. However, there may be some exceptions,
and please see individual start dates in module descriptions below.
 Full timetable and delivery information will be provided by each module coordinator from mid-
September.

              This is the core language module for all students except those of the BComm Int.
              Students will read various text types in the German language and respond to these
              texts orally and in written form. They will produce a range of original written texts in
              the target language relating to living in the target language country and to the
Description   students' studies, including correspondence, discursive and narrative. A selection of
              texts will be translated from German into English and from English into German. An
              oral practice class will give students the opportunity to develop their spoken German.
              Grammar classes will reinforce and deepen students' awareness of German linguistic
              structures.

              We discuss different aspects of the experience of love, friendship, eroticism,
              compassion, religious devotion, through the interpretation of their poetic reflection.

              Module Content: The module will analyse and interpret various examples from the

              history of German Liebeslyrik, beginning with the medieval Minnesang (Walther von
              der Vogelweide), Brautmystik (Mechthild von Magdeburg), putting emphasis on
              Goethezeit, romanticism (cult of friendship and romantic love, e.g. Novalis), 20th and
              21st century poems (e.g. Erich Fried).

Title         Classics of German Culture

              This module looks at key texts, both literary and other, in the German canon.
              We will explore major contributions to world thought and culture associated with
              German-speaking cultures and territories, exemplified in texts by Goethe, Kant, Marx,

              Freud, Nietzsche, Kafka, and Arendt. We will pay particular attention to themes,
              aesthetics, ideologies and impact. We will also examine the legacy of these texts within
              and beyond the culture and time of their original publication.
              GE2002 will be delivered as a mix of online and in-class sessions, arrangements to be

              Although language is essential to human life and we use it daily, we hardly reflect on
              it. This module will introduce students to the fascinating field of linguistics where
              they will learn about the nature of signs and language, the structure of words and the
              patterns of word formation, the sound and meaning of words as well as the structure

              of sentences. They will also become familiar with sociolinguistic themes, such as
              dialects, accents and language variation, language change, language and gender,
              language and age, bilingualism, code-switching and multilingualism, migration in
              discourse, language planning and language rights.
              Classes will be delivered through a blended form of teaching (online and in-class
              sessions); the in-class sessions are subject to public health guidelines. Final

Title         An Intercultural Journey: Preparation and Reflective Writing for the Year Abroad

              The aim of this module is to prepare students for the Year Abroad culturally and
              interculturally, and help them identify their own learning goals in academic,
              linguistic, professional and personal terms. Students will receive input on concepts
              such as intercultural learning and intercultural competence, theories of adjustment

              and living abroad. We will engage closely with a cross-section of scholarly papers on
              the Year Abroad and ask how these publications are relevant to one's own learning.
              Students will reflect on their learning paths and course concepts by way of reflective
              learning journals throughout the module.

              Remembering the GDR: Competing Memories of an East German Past in Post-Wende

              The memory of the GDR is a key issue in German literature, and it is highly contested.
              The author’s generational belonging but also an increasing temporal distance
              influence the way the East German past is looked back at and how its aftermath is

              dealt with. We will explore literary texts (and films) from different time periods,
              identify constitutive themes and topoi (e.g. ‘Ostalgia’) and ask how representations
              of the GDR have been changing and why.

              Nationalism, it has been argued, is one of only a handful of major discourses that
              determine the ideological matrix in which modern human existence is embedded.
              This course will examine the phenomenon of nationalism in the context of Germany,

              a country with a perhaps uniquely troubled relationship with the concept of identity
              as determined by nationalist ideology, the troubled relationship serving to magnify
              tensions that are, of course, inherent in all.

Title         Gender and Power in German Literature and Film

              This module explores films and literary texts that chart and reflect upon the recent
              history of gender relations in the German-speaking countries, including: women's
              suffrage; the entry of women into formal education and professions; sexual
              'revolutions' and emancipatory movements; backlashes; feminist and queer theory
              and activism; critiques of patriarchy and heteronormativity. Consulting key texts
Description
              and diverse voices from c. 1890 to the present day, from Frank Wedekind and Lou
              Andreas-Salomé to Ingeborg Bachman and Elfriede Jelinek, also exploring early
              feminist activism and silent cinema, we investigate literature and film as modes of
              reflection and critique which portray, contest and re-imagine the distribution of
              social and symbolic power within sex-gender systems.

Title         Political and Social Culture since 1945

              The aim of the seminar is to give students an overview of German history, culture
              and society after the Second World War, based on discussion of various texts and
              media. The seminar will progress chronologically but focus on aspects of life in East

              and West Germany and the effects the reunification had on the lives of the people.
              The seminar is also designed to prepare students for their year abroad by dealing
              with historical questions as well as by discussing cultural issues and differences.

Title         Memory in Contemporary Fiction

              The various memory cultures and memory forms, including individual, collective and
              communicative memories, are central to a big number of texts which by literary
              critics have been called 'fictions of memory'. In this seminar we will do a close
              reading of one prominent example of this literary genre and learn to identify key

              aspects of it. The textual analysis will be supported by a discussion of various
              theoretical texts which will inform the students about concepts central to the notion
              of memory, such as remembering and forgetting, narrative and identity, and space
              and belonging.

Attendance

Every student registered for a degree is expected to attend all lectures, tutorials,
laboratory classes etc. A student will not be permitted to enter for an examination at the
conclusion of a module, if attendance at the module is not considered satisfactory by
the Registrar and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs following a report by the
lecturer concerned and/or Head of Department/Discipline/School responsible for that
module. The decision of the Registrar and Senior Vice President is subject to the
appeal of the Academic Council of the University.
