Editorial
Dear readers,
An extraordinary year is coming to an end. Drastic changes led to a rethinking of common prac-
tices and adaptation to quickly changing circumstances in and out of school. Especially in this
difficult situation, it is our main goal to provide our services to the best possible extent and thus
to focus on the learning process of our students. While the strengthening of the network of SIS
Swiss International Schools has always been part of our conception and is rooted in our educa-
tional concept, it gained a new level of importance in 2020. Through our school network, we were
quickly able to develop goal-oriented solutions and to work collectively on shared challenges.
Locally as well internationally, we worked out and implemented binding protection and learning
concepts, taking into consideration the local circumstances. We shared new ways of learning and
established an interesting learning process within our network.
The period of distance learning inspired teachers and students alike to strike out in new direc-
tions and innovate. A good example of this is the collaboration between teachers and students
from two of our school locations, Zürich and Regensburg, working together on research ques-
tions regarding the Covid-19 pandemic (page 9). This not only resulted in interesting encounters
and a blog, but also strengthened the SIS community across countries and more importantly,
allowed our students to engage in hands-on investigation into some pressing questions. Another
example of creativity triggered by and during remote teaching is described in the report from SIS
Friedrichshafen on page 34. While looking for new ways to strengthen the sense of belonging and
the school spirit during distance learning, the idea of a whole-school weekly challenge was born.
This SIS World appears in a new design and thus also celebrates its tenth anniversary. The look
has changed, though the basic idea remains: an emphasis on our educational concept, which is at
the heart of our pedagogical approach expressed by a report from each SIS school relating to it.
It is a great pleasure to be involved in SIS Swiss International School's development this year. SIS
Regensburg moved into a new and modern school building, and in Frankfurt we opened up a new
school; the 17th location within our community. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the
parents and our students from all school locations for their trust and cooperation.
I wish you pleasant reading and hope that you will discover the excitement of the many authors
who contributed to this edition.
Best regards,

SUMMARY
Secondary teacher Daniel Pfister explains the importance
of teamwork in a group project to build a roller coaster. Sci-
entific knowledge was applied and each student had to take
responsibility for a particular task to ensure that the project was
successfully completed. The most important features of group
dynamics worked for the SIS Pfäffikon-Schwyz students who
each produced differing but successful outcomes.

The bilingual system: opportunity and challenge
at the same time
The class dynamic continuously changed throughout the years,
but a sense of being one community was quickly established
during the yearly class trips to destinations such as Croatia and
Lugano. But of course, there is more to it. The bilingual system
was a challenge for some, but a great opportunity for all. By
the time we were ready to move up from the first floor, which
is dedicated to the primary classes, we felt grown and full of
knowledge. But not for long; we were back to being the young-
est and had to face the long way ahead of us. Looking back
now, we really have come far. But we are prepared for what is
yet to come.

SUMMARY
Despite the curveball thrown to education worldwide by the
coronavirus, SIS Frankfurt opened its doors on 17 August 2020.
Principal Daniel Lauris and his team greeted 18 students in the
reception programme, first and second grade, as well as their
parents. He pointed out that it was not only the first day for the
children, but for the school as well. Together with two full-time
teachers, a teaching aid and an administrative assistant, Lauris
will steer SIS Frankfurt through its first school year.
