Marlins vs. Reds By: Thomas Whitman MARLINS TAKE TWO FROM REDS 2-1, 10-9 MOVE ON TO FINALS At a chilly but very playable Navajo field- game one came down to good defense and excellent pitching performances by Omi Estevez (Omie went six Estrada finished for the Marlins) and Scott Perlman. The game was tied at 1 until the top of the 7th when Marlin SS Eric Estrada (3-3) led off with a liner in the gap- scored a triple. It became the go-ahead run when the Red relay went awry and rolled into the Marlin dugout. The bottom of the 7th saw the Reds with runners in scoring position, but as it was throughout the game, the Reds could not get the big hit and went down 2-1. The bats of both teams woke up for game two as a three run Marlin lead was erased by a six run Red 4th. Jon Baumstark and Pat Devaney provided RBI doubles. The Reds added 3 thanks to some wind-aided Marlin 2|Page
miscues- The Marlins added three and it was 9-6 Reds bottom of the 7th. Estrada- who the Reds just could not get out- a lead off single. With one out, Carlos Gonzalez singled. Mike Carrozza, who had a fine DH catching both ends, HBP. After a balk moved the tying runners over, Guillermo Ceasar strokes a clutch game tying 2B to right. Another clutch base hit and SB by Nick Sosa, and it’s second and now the winning run on third with one out. The Reds elected to pitch to Vin Sasso rather than walk him, when the Marlins and Sasso surprised us all with a perfectly executed suicide squeeze scoring Caesar, sending the Reds to the bar and the Marlins to the finals. Congrats to the Reds on a fine season, and Congrats to the Marlins on their victory-they earned it.
