Parent Information Booklet
2019 - 2020St. Kevin’s Community College, Dunlavin
Striving together for Excellence
Dear Parent(s) / Guardians,
As we get ready for the coming school year I hope that you will find the information in this booklet of great use to
you. As you know the post-primary years are a particularly important time in the education of your children and it
is essential that they are prepared for school from the beginning of term.
Within this booklet you will find the school calendar with dates of school closures, parent teacher meetings and
other school events which should help you to plan your year. I would ask that you try to limit time missed from
school by scheduling appointments and other activities during school holiday time. I am aware, of course, that
unforeseen events cannot be avoided, in this case please advise the year head in advance.
While the school receives a capitation grant from the Department of Education each year this does not allow us to
offer all the activities and events that extend the educational experience for your children. In the following pages
you will see details of the family charges that help us to finance many of these extra facilities and activities including
the school journal, 24hr accident insurance, student lockers, additional class materials etc. The payment of the
‘family charge’ reduces the reliance on ongoing fundraising from parents and allows parents to plan adequately for
the year ahead. Your support in paying the family charges is much appreciated, please get in touch with me directly
if you wish to arrange to pay in instalments.
Equipment lists are included as a guide for parents to help to get ready for the coming year over the summer. For
the first few days in September copies, pens and calculators etc. will be sufficient in most cases. At this time teachers
will clarify exactly what is required and when.
The school uniform is an important aspect of our school which promotes a pride in personal appearance and in the
school. Full details of the uniform are included in this pack. Students are always expected to wear the full school
uniform while in school or on school related activities. The PE uniform should be only be worn for PE and on trips
and activities if requested by the organising teacher. In addition to the uniform code, we operate strict rules
surrounding piercings, makeup and hair styling. Your support with upholding the standard of the college is much
appreciated.
Finally, I have enclosed details of our Digital Learning Programme. You will be aware of the many learning activities
which are supported using the student devices such as preparation for Classroom Based Assessments, production
of reports and projects and access to online resources in addition to access to eBooks.
The Digital Learning Programme continues to evolve with our TY class of last year using a digital portfolio to support
their learning over the year. In the coming year Junior cycle students will use eBooks and tablets in all subjects while
the TY class will once again complete the ePortfolio. 5th year students will continue to have the option to use their
devices to support their learning in senior cycle.
I trust that all your questions can be answered by reference to the information in this pack. If you have any queries,
please contact me through the main office. I would like to wish all our students and families the best of health and
happiness over the summer. I look forward to welcoming everyone in September.
Yours sincerely

the device which should last students into their TY and senior cycle. Our experience has been that the streamlined
service works best for families and the school, particularly in Junior Cycle.
Cost of the device
For the coming year we have put a lot of effort into finding a suitable device to carry students into the senior cycle.
HP is a well known and respected brand which has a very good reputation. Similar devices may appear cheaper
online While this device is more expensive than in previous years we have been able to reduce the cost of ebooks
from €300 to €200, payable only in second year to help parents with the high initial cost of starting in first year.
Parent Support
To assist parents in adapting to the use of this new technology training workshops will be provided in September,
these will be offered in school time and as evening sessions. These have proven to be very useful in previous years
Are there other things I need to plan for?
Insurance
Wriggle offer insurance through their online store or through www.wriggle.ie/insurance
Parents may wish to source other insurance providers to ensure the best value for money. We strongly recommend
that the device is covered by insurance as replacement of a damaged device can. The school cannot finance the

What about Insurance?
The device can be insured on your home insurance or through a number of private companies. Wriggle have
arranged a package through Gadget Insurance.com. It is important to be sure of what is covered in your policy
and what the excess payment is on a claim. Insurance is strongly recommended.
When will my child get the device?
Devices will be sent directly to your home in advance of the school year. The school will run a workshop to get
students up to speed on their device in early September.
What software will be on the tablet?
The tablet will be deployed with Windows10, Microsoft Office, the eBook digital apps with eBooks installed and
some other apps to aid learning together with links to various resources.
Do I need Broadband or Wi-Fi at home?
No. The tablet will connect to the school network while in school. Any homework / assignments can be downloaded

on their return to school.
What about charging the device?
Charging the device will be part of homework! In school students will only be allowed to use the device for school

How will internet safety be addressed?
The school Wi-Fi is filtered and offers a high level of protection from inappropriate content. Social media sites are
blocked also. At home it is a matter for parents to ensure that there is filtering of internet content or to supervise
internet use as normal. As part of the Digital Learning module for first year internet safety will be discussed and a
responsible approach will be encouraged.

What if my child’s device isn’t working?
The extended warranty covers next business day on-site repair of devices. Other support is detailed below.
During the school day
Support is available each morning and lunchtime – students should bring their device to the support centre. Details
are posted on noticeboards in the school.
If a problem with the device occurs at home
Wriggle can be contacted on 015009060 or at tech@wrigglelearning.ie
• If unresolved students should alert their tutor when they arrive to tutorial in the morning with a note from
their parent.
• They should then go to the support centre where the teacher / digital leaders will try to fix the problem.
• Most issues can be resolved quickly in school. More difficult issues may need to be resolved by Wriggle
either in school or by sending the device away. This will be managed by the school if the issue is due to a
technical difficulty. The procedures for physical damage are shown below.
What if my child breaks their device?
Broken devices are covered by your chosen Insurance provider or which can be taken out at the time of purchase.
Parents should contact their insurer to arrange for a repair/replacement to take place. If you haven’t taken out
insurance you will be liable for the full repair/replacement cost of the device.
Can I have a replacement device while mine is sent away for repair?
The school will endeavour to supply a spare tablet, for a limited time, to students once theirs is sent for repair.
Students must be responsible for the safe-keeping of the school device and return it in good order. Parents will
be asked to take responsibility for damage incurred, including payment for damage if necessary, before a tablet is
issued. The device loan scheme depends on all students looking after the school devices to ensure that they are
available when needed by others. Your support in this matter is appreciated.
