JAPAN FOUNDATION JAPANESE
ROADSHOW EVENT
By Mrs Lea Watson, Teacher
On Wednesday 24 March, two Year 8
Japanese classes visited Scotch Oakburn
College to participate in the Japan
Foundation Japanese Roadshow event.
Members of the Japan Foundation,
Sydney were in attendance and our
students spent the afternoon immersed
in Japanese cultural activities.
The students learned a traditional
Yosakoi dance from the Japanese island
of Shikoku. They also participated in
Undoukai, (Sports Festival) activities,
which are a big part of each and every

divided into colour teams and enjoyed
competing against each other to play
Dekapan (running together wearing huge
shared boxer shorts), tama ire (ball toss
game) & oodama (giant ball).
This was a wonderful opportunity for
our students to experience authentic
Japanese culture, whilst learning
appropriate Japanese phrases at the
same time. The students are to be
commended on their active participation
in this event.

ST PATRICK’S DAY FEAST
Learning is definitely engaging in
our Senior VET Hospitality program,
especially when catering for the St
Patrick’s Feast day function where the
daily brief is to enjoy yourself, be happy
and most importantly embrace the
celebration of our patron Saint Patrick.
The St Patrick’s VET kitchen brigade
consisted of 25 Year 11/12 students
and included students from our three
independent school partners (Scotch
Oakburn College, The Launceston
Christian School, and Launceston
Church Grammar School). Together the
Hospitality team created a gastronomic
feast that was nothing short of
spectacular. Well done to all staff and
students involved in this event.
VET ANIMAL STUDIES
A new Year 10 VET Animal Studies
partnership has been recently formed
between Larmenier Primary School and St
Patrick’s College. This golden opportunity
to work in cooperation with the Larmenier
school farm has offered our students
practical animal handling experiences
alongside the staff and students from one
of our local Catholic primary schools. The
farm school accommodates a broad range
of farm, companion animals and pets. Our
students are extremely grateful to have
these hands-on experiences in our local
area. Thank you to the staff and students
at Larmenier Primary School for welcoming
our students onto your farm.

FUTURE PATHWAYS
By Ms Jodie White, Future Pathways Coordinator
YEAR 11 FUTURES DAY
Last Thursday, Year 11 students
participated in a Futures Day, with a
focus on information to support their
learning in Year 11 and 12 as well
as assisting them to make informed
choices regarding pathways and
options after Year 12.
The day was full of information,
interactive activities, guest presenters
and workshops, giving students
relevant skills, knowledge, advice and
resources to navigate Years 11 and 12.
The students engaged in all aspects
of the day, which was reflective in the
positive feedback, received from the
guest presenters and exhibitors who
attended.
The day generated a lot of interest
with students starting to think,
question, plan and investigate their
career interests and aspirations.
St Patrick’s College is very grateful
for the invaluable support and
contribution from the many
organisations that attended the

Raising Screenagers
Realistic strategies to navigate the online
world with your adolescent.
I arm parents with research-based information and
realistic solutions (that don’t involve phone bans or
digitally disconnecting your teens) so that your teen
can thrive online & offline.
This presentation will help confused and concerned parents navigate the digital world with their
‘screenagers’, without suggesting that they ‘digitally amputate’ them. Dr Kristy will arm parents with
research-based yet realistic advice to help parents feel confident about how they can best support
their adolescent’s physical health, mental wellbeing and learning online.
Kristy will explore:
// Why young people are susceptible to POTENTIAL PITFALLS ONLINE given their BRAIN
DEVELOPMENT;
// Why the online world is APPEALING to adolescents (there’s science to explain your teen’s digital
infatuation);
// A simple (& realistic) formula to determine healthy SCREEN TIME limits for teens of various ages
(based on their BASIC NEEDS);
// Why parents need to be the CO-PILOT of the DIGITAL PLANE and establish 5 BOUNDARIES to
ensure their teen’s time online supports her PHYSICAL HEALTH and MENTAL WELLBEING;
// How to support their teen’s ‘DIGITAL DNA’ especially when using social media or playing multi-
player video games;
// Why DIGITAL DISCONNECTION is critical for your teen’s PHYSICAL HEALTH and MENTAL
WELLBEING.
