Solar Shading IN THE UK:
Accoya Fins Used in Bespoke Solar Shading System in Edinburgh

The scenario:
Scottish Widows’ striking Exchange Place development in
Edinburgh’s central business district comprises 210,000
square feet (c.19,500 m2) of premium office space. Standing
out from its two neighbours, Exchange Place 3 incorporates
a host of eye-catching, energy efficient features, including
a bespoke Solar Shading system and ventilation louvres by
Levolux, the UK’s leading Solar Shading specialist.

The Solar Shading System has helped to give the building the
highest green credentials, leading to an ‘Excellent’ BREEAM
rating and a B+ EPC rating. The system shades glazed areas on
each of the building’s five floors, preventing excessive solar
heat gain within the building. This is essential to maintain
a comfortable internal environment in a naturally ventilated
building, without the need for mechanical cooling or air
conditioning equipment

                    retention is excellent”
                    Peter Bowman, Partner at cre8architecture

Material & Finish:
1,060 Accoya wood fins were used in combination with glass
fins and Matrix XL Brise Soleil to prevent excessive solar heat
gain within the building, fitted to exposed elevations.

Accoya wood was selected for its stability, durability and
sustainability. Levolux was able to offer a 10 year warranty
for the finish applied to the solar shading system and a life
expectancy of 60 years. Over two years later, the fins look and
perform as new and the colour retention is excellent.

Comments:
Peter Bowman, Partner at cre8architecture, praised Levolux,
commenting; “We worked closely with Levolux to achieve the
concept design and realise the aesthetic and performance
characteristics which have helped to create a unique city
centre building.”
