ROAD SAFETY
Riding to school on a bike is a great
form of exercise and is good for the
environment.
Please can we remind you to wear your
bike helmet and to ride single file on
main roads.
If you are walking to school and enter
from the front of the Academy (bus bay
area), please use the path and path
gates to enter the school grounds.
The road is usually very busy during this
time and is used by both cars and
buses.Democracy in the UK 2021

2021 ELECTIONS
In May, there are various elections taking place in the UK.
• Scotland and Wales parliamentary elections
• Members of two of the UK's parliaments - Holyrood in Scotland and the Senedd in Wales - will
be chosen by voters in those nations.
• These parliaments are responsible for areas like health, housing and education.
• The powers were moved away from the UK Parliament in London under a process called
devolution.Democracy in the UK 2021

ENGLAND’S LOCAL
ELECTIONS
Across England thousands
of council seats will also
be up for grabs.
Councillors are in charge
of many services - from
bin collections to social
care, sports facilities and
libraries.Democracy in the UK 2021
PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
Why do these elections matter?
Coronavirus is the most important issue to voters, according to a survey by the University of Essex. But there are
many other issues:
Scotland
Independence is expected to play a big part, as the SNP seeks another referendum. Parties that want Scotland to
stay part of the UK will hope to reduce the SNP's dominance, while former First Minister Alex Salmond has
launched his own pro-independence party.
Wales
Labour, in power since 1999, faces a challenge from the Conservatives, with other parties seeking to gain seats.
The campaign has seen pledges on income tax, social care, climate change, Welsh independence and a proposal
to abolish the Welsh Senedd altogether.
Local elections
Council tax could be a big issue as local authorities look to repair their finances. Issues like housing and changes
to bus routes can also be factors.
Hartlepool by-election
The election of a new MP will be Sir Keir Starmer's first parliamentary
electoral test since becoming Labour leader. It could give an indication
of whether voters in traditional northern Labour seats are still turning
to the Conservatives.Democracy in the UK 2021
PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
How are the winners chosen?
Scotland, Wales and London Assembly
People have two votes - one to choose who represents the constituency, and one to choose which
party represents their wider region
Mayors and police and crime commissioners
Voters select a first and second preference - if no candidate receives 50% of first-preference
choices, the top two go into a run-off
The second preferences of voters whose favoured candidates have been eliminated are then taken
into account
English councils
Voters have one vote for each available seat in their area
In most cases, that means one vote - but large wards may have multiple seats
Whoever receives the most votes wins the seat
If one party wins more than half the council seats, they have control of the council
If no party has a majority, parties will often join forces (known as a coalition)Democracy in the UK 2021
PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT In Huntingdonshire, voting will take place on
Thursday 6 May for the following:
The Cambridge and Peterborough Mayoral Election Candidates 2021

education, road maintenance, social care, public libraries
and long-term strategic planning. Other public services
in a county council area will be controlled by the more

Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough- What do
they do?
The combined authority mayor is responsible
for planning and strategy for regional transport, skills
training and local economic development across several
local authorities.

There is an exciting opportunity for our students to become part of the St Neots Youth
Council. Created in 2021, St Neots Youth Council represents all young people aged 11 – 18 in
St Neots. They believe that young people should have a say on the issues that affect their
lives and make a difference by voicing their opinions and working with decision-makers
across the town, working together to improve things for young people and build a better
future. They want to take action and inspire and empower others to do the same. As part of
the St Neots Youth Council, they are consulted about key decisions in the town and work on
their own projects and campaign for important issues for all young people in St Neots.
Youth Councillors have the opportunity to:
• Create change and make their ideas for the town a reality
• Influence the town council and local community projects
• Meet other young people across the town and make friends
• Build a whole host of other skills such as public speaking and consulting others, building
confidence and boosting your CV

Remembering innovations of the past…
This week marked the death of one of the founders of the software company Adobe.
Charles Geschke was the co-founder of the software company who helped develop the
Portable Document Format, or PDF. He died in California aged 81 on the 16th April 2021.
COMPUTING
Geschke set up Adobe in 1982, giving the world PDF software as well as many of the other
audio-visual innovations we take for granted today such as Photoshop. Adobe CEO
Shantanu Narayen said Geschke, widely known as Chuck, "sparked the desktop publishing
revolution".
Geschke made headlines when he was
kidnapped at gunpoint and held for
ransom before being released unhurt
after a four-day ordeal in May 1992.
The two kidnappers were eventually
sentenced to life terms in state prison.Did you know…
Recognising innovations in the present…
Recently Elon Musk has also been developing some interesting technology as well. It is no secret that Elon
Musks Company “Neuralink” wants to build a BMI (Brain Machine Interface) system that is wireless and fully
implantable.
COMPUTING
Neuralink, has just released a video that it claims shows a monkey playing the video game Pong with its mind.
Its brain signals were sent wirelessly via an implanted device.
The hope is that the interface could eventually allow people with neurological conditions to control phones or
computers remotely. One expert said the fact no wires were used represented "significant progress".
The macaque monkey, named Pager, was first taught to play the video game with a joystick, and was rewarded
with a fruit smoothie.
During this process, the Neuralink device recorded the information about which neurons were firing to control
which movements. Then the joystick was disconnected, leaving the monkey to control the gameplay with its
mind only.
