 CHILDREN’S SUMMER
 ART PROGRAM
FIREHOUSE ART CENTER CHILDREN’S ART EDUCATION
The Children’s Summer Art Program is designed to educate and encourage
children to express themselves through the arts with original ideas and concepts.
FAC classes help children build fundamental and advanced cognitive skills and
promote diverse methods of critical thinking and learning. The FAC’s Creating
with the Masters curriculum introduces children to the works of master and
modern artists and teaches them about the history of art, museums, and art
techniques while meeting the Oklahoma Academic Standards for Fine Arts: Visual
Arts guidelines. Please contact the FAC for information regarding need-based
scholarships or if you would like to donate to the children’s scholarship fund.

ABOUT THE CHILDREN’S SUMMER ART PROGRAM
Minimum enrollment: 9 // Maximum enrollment: 15
Children attend daily, Monday through Friday, from 9:30 - 11:45 AM, for either one
or two weeks. Sessions are offered by age group. A 15 minute supervised recess
will take place in the park after an hour of class. Tuition includes all materials.
During the last half hour of the final class in each session, parents are invited
to view a mini exhibition of work produced during the program. The Children’s
Summer Art Program is funded in part by the Oklahoma Arts Council, the Norman
Arts Council, and the City of Norman.

Please visit the Firehouse Art Center or call 405.329.4523 to enroll.

CHILDREN’S SUMMER ART SHOW
August 9 - August 24 | Reception: Friday, August 16 from 6 - 8 PM
Each summer, the FAC Gallery features the work of students who participated
in that year’s Children’s Summer Art Program. One piece of artwork from each
student that took a class during the summer will be selected to be shown in the
exhibition. The art show is an exciting experience for the students, allowing them
the opportunity to showcase the effort they put into their art through a professional
gallery setting. The exhibition also highlights the FAC faculty’s dedication to
excellence and providing quality art education.

                                                                          S U M M E R 2 0 19 | 5

                                         PENANNULAR BROOCHES
Travel back to the days of simple tools, using hammer, anvil, and fire to bed,
stamp, and texturize a penannular brooch. Penannular, meaning a circle that is not
complete, refers to a brooch that is circular in shape with an attached movable pin.
It is an ancient form of closures for capes, shawls, and blankets (think Vikings or
Game of Thrones). Sample the basic metalsmithing techniques you can learn in a
full-length class at the Firehouse as you create an original work of functional art.

                                         CLAY CANVAS
A canvas isn’t made of clay, but clay can be a canvas! This workshop will focus on
the concept of surface and play with the idea of using a three-dimensional medium
as a canvas. Students will utilize various surface treatments to create a small plate
or platter embellished with designs of their choosing. Get your hands dirty and
learn some of the basic traditional ceramics techniques taught at the Firehouse.

DRAWING & PAINTING FROM OBSERVATION: ALL MEDIA STUDIO
In this recurring class series, attendees can practice and refine their drawing and
painting techniques in an open format studio setting. A member of the Firehouse’s
educational faculty will be on-hand, facilitating each of the non-instructed studio
sessions throughout the semester and working alongside students. Classes
will focus on a variety of poses and subjects, but each class is designed to
allow participants to explore composition, proportion, perspective, and more,
through the drawing or painting (acrylic, watercolor, or oil mediums) approach of
their choosing. All levels are welcome, however this studio is primarily suited for
intermediate to advanced students looking for an opportunity to practice and hone
their abilities through working with a live model or drawing on location. Easels and
drawing horses are provided; attendees must provide their own art supplies. Both
drawing and painting are permitted during each session, but paper or canvases
are limited to a maximum 18”x24” in size. Each session requires individual pre-

CHINESE BRUSHWORK PAINTING: BAMBOO & CHINESE CALLIGRAPHY
Chinese painting and Chinese calligraphy are allied arts, using the same
equipment and techniques. The strokes used in painting bamboo are taken
directly from the word for bamboo, so that the image created when painting
bamboo becomes both a painting and calligraphic piece. Using ink and
watercolor on rice paper, students will learn to paint bamboo compositions and
the basic brushstrokes to paint Chinese characters.

                                             PAINTING WITH THREAD: EMBROIDERED ANIMALS
The embroidery technique of thread painting, or needle painting, uses many of
the stylistic techniques found in traditional painting. Threads are “blended” while
stitching to show not only color, but also movement, light, shadow, and dimension.
Students will look at works by Pablo Picasso and Albrecht Dürer as inspiration to
create portraits of animals using photographs of a beloved pet or creature. This

THE SAMO DUCKY PROJECT

                         THE SAMO DUCKY PROJECT
The Samo Ducky Project began in 2010 as a Firehouse Art Center initiative to
develop an icon that would appeal to all ages and become a symbol of local arts
by promoting and increasing the visibility of public art in the Norman community.

In 2011, the Public Arts Board (PAB) began searching for ideas to enhance our
Norman Parks. The PAB liked the concept of the Cow Parade in Chicago and
other similar projects, but wanted to create something unique, produced locally
and that incorporated its mission, to create exciting, appealing, and harmonious
public spaces through the integration of art into public places.

The PAB accepted a proposal to use the Firehouse Art Center’s original duck,
“Samo Ducky,” designed by Douglas Shaw Elder. The PAB hired 3-D Extreme
in Norman to cast fiberglass reproductions of the original duck and published
a “Request for Proposals” to Norman artists to submit their visions of the duck
                         sculptures to paint and enhance.

                                            ART EDUCATION IN SCHOOLS
The Firehouse Art Center’s Art Education in Schools programming primarily
focuses on providing visual arts education and experiences to K-5 students in the
Norman Public School (NPS) system. A majority of Norman’s public elementary
schools are without regular art educators and are considered Title I, meaning
40% or more of the students are eligible for the free or reduced lunch program.
As a community institution dedicated to providing the highest quality visual
arts education and experiences, the Firehouse Art Center supplements these
challenges through the provision of both regular and project-based arts education
programs in Norman’s public elementary schools. All in-school art education
projects and programs introduce visual art education that connects the students’
current curriculum with the Oklahoma Academic Standards for Fine Arts: Visual
Arts guidelines. Projects are designed to allow children to see their subject from a
different viewpoint, to expand the ways in which they absorb information, and to
express their understanding of their education in a vibrant way.

Kids Art is Smart at Lincoln Elementary
Since 2009, the Firehouse has partnered with the Norman Arts Council and
Norman Public School System to produce the Kids Art is Smart program.
Currently, the program is being administered at Lincoln Elementary School, where
Firehouse instructor Jane Lawson provides comprehensive visual arts education to
all 302 PreK-5 students. Instruction is provided on a consistent basis throughout
the school year, supplementing the lack of dedicated visual arts instruction in
Norman’s public elementary schools, while meeting the educational needs of
Norman’s schoolchildren. Lawson works closely with PreK-5 teachers at Lincoln to
develop comprehensive visual arts education lessons that challenges children to
see their curriculum from a different viewpoint and to express their understanding
of the classroom material in a visual way.

The FAC’s Art Education in Schools programs are made possible through grants
from the Oklahoma Arts Council, Norman Arts Council, and Allied Arts, and
through generous individual donations. To support, volunteer for, or donate to
Art Education in Schools programs, please contact the Firehouse by email at

ARTS ENGAGEMENT IN
AWARDS & RECOGNITION

                       AMERICAN COMMUNITIES
The Firehouse Art Center (FAC) is proud to announce that it was selected as a
recipient of funding by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) for the past
year. The FAC was awarded the Arts Engagement in American Communities
grant to provide visual arts programming to underserved and underrepresented
groups in the Norman community. Through the FAC’s community outreach,
Healing Studio, and new veterans program, the organization is able to serve
community members that often lack the opportunity to engage with the visual
arts. The Firehouse has endeavored to reach these individuals by providing arts
programming, offered at no cost to participants, that is accessible to people of all
                       socioeconomic backgrounds and ability levels.

Receiving NEA funding is an honor for the Firehouse, as it represents not
only monetary support but national recognition of the quality of programming
developed by the FAC. All of the FAC’s programs are built around educational
visual arts experiences that focus on self-expression, creativity, art history, and
technical skills, with a foundational curriculum rooted in the FAC’s Creating with
the Masters and the Oklahoma Academic Standards for Fine Arts: Visual Arts
guidelines. The technical skills required of the projects and activities for these
programs are adaptable and can accommodate individuals of all abilities.

                       OKLAHOMA NONPROFIT
                       EXCELLENCE (ONE) AWARDS
The Firehouse Art Center was humbled and proud to have been selected as a
finalist in the Arts & Humanities category for the prestigious Oklahoma Nonprofit
Excellence (ONE) Awards in April 2018. Executive Director Douglas Shaw Elder
credits the committed efforts of the Board of Trustees and staff over the past ten
years for the achievements leading to this recognition. “I have never worked with
a more dedicated and community-minded Board and staff, and I am proud of the
excellent service that the Firehouse Art Center provides to Norman. The diligent
efforts and professionalism of these individuals results in the provision of high
quality arts education to an average of 14,000 members of the community every
year. Being recognized alongside deadCenter Film and Red Earth is an indication
of the high caliber of work being done in the Arts in Oklahoma. We are so proud to
                       bring this recognition to Norman.”
