           TENNIS STAR ENJOYS
           EUROPEAN SUCCESS

Year 8 pupil Joe M’s Tennis career continues to go from strength to strength.

He recently competed in Germany in a Tennis Europe competition against players from countries
such as France, Spain and the Czech Republic as well as Germany. On this occasion Joe didn’t have
to qualify and went straight into the main draw alongside 63 other players.
Against a German opponent, Joe won both sets 7-5 and 6-2. He said, “Everything went well – I was
ready to play as I hadn’t had to qualify so had been practising.”
In the Round of 16, Joe was beaten by a very experienced German opponent, but managed to win
the first set 6-4 in a match that lasted three hours.
At the moment Joe is maintaining his training schedule while there are no tournaments. As with
all sports, world events have impacted on Joe. He said, “I was due to go to La Manga in Spain on
Saturday and Croatia for eighteen days over Easter, but both have been cancelled.
We are sure Joe’s tennis career will continue to develop and look forward to hearing more about
his progress.

DAISY BENN IS SHORTLISTED FOR NATIONAL
             WRITING PRIZE
Daisy Benn, 10PDR, has been shortlisted in First Story’s 100 Word Story Competition. Daisy, who was the
Year 10 winner in our in-house competition, will receive a set of postcards printed with her story, and have
it published on First Story’s website.
Daisy is one of only a handful of students from schools across the country to be shortlisted, and will now go
on to the next stage of the competition.
Well done Daisy!

Her chest was open and her feet were too small to walk around home barefoot. Her hands were too short
limbed and even with her nails plucked down to the bone she thought them too feminine.
Their chest was wrapped tight and their shoes had grown too short to wear, and from their fingers
protruded toothy nails.
His chest was bare, baring scars, such desirable scars; his nails stretched down to his thighs, helpful needles
proclaiming his victory, and his feet were gloved in loose socks. His voice was earthy and his skin wasn’t a

                             READING FOR HEALTH
“There are many little ways to enlarge your child’s world. Love of books is the best of all.” —Jacqueline
Kennedy
The next weeks are going to be a challenging time for many of us; especially our children, as their routines
are changed, and they find themselves away from the familiar, and at times fearful.
Reading books is one of the best ways of escaping from the everyday, and leaving your worries behind,
whilst at the same time enlarging your child’s world. Reading also impacts on mental strength, encourages
empathy, reduces stress, improves focus, and expands vocabulary and knowledge.
Please, over the next weeks, do encourage your children, to have some tranquil time with a good book and
remember that they are not alone, and we look forward to seeing them soon at the Library.

                                                       NEWS LETTER
                          SOPHIE HAYWOOD
Earlier this year we were delighted to welcome former pupil Sophie Haywood back to Longcroft where
she delivered a coaching session for a number of girls who enjoy their football. Sophie also talked to
them about her career, which has seen the current Aston Villa player represent her country.

We are delighted that Sophie is enjoying a successful season
with Aston Villa, who currently sit five points clear at the top of
their league and are pushing hard for promotion. A strong end
to last season coupled with an unbeaten run during the current
campaign has seen the team lose only one game in their past 24
FA Women’s Championship matches.
Reflecting on a whirlwind 18 months at the club, Sophie is
proud of the club’s progress since her first game that ended
in defeat to Manchester United. “That first game against
Manchester United, it was a tough time,” she said. “It was my
first proper game for Villa, and it was a bit like ‘what have I
done?’, ‘am I at the right place?’ and ‘what does the future hold
for the club?’.
“After that loss, a lot of the girls took it hard and there was
a lot of stuff on social media, but we had this belief that we
had something to build off and that things were going to get
better.”
The next step is to secure promotion to the FA Women’s Super
League, which would bring with it the chance for Villa’s players
to become full-time professionals. For Sophie, who took up the
game at eight-years-old, it would be a dream come true if Villa
can secure top spot this term. She said, “I can speak for most
of the girls when I say that we’ve dreamt of this. We’ve trained
from childhood to now and it’s all been leading towards this.
It’s an exciting time, a nerve-wracking time as there’s still a way
to go and performances to put in. We’re all very focussed and
excited for what’s to come.”
We are all hoping Aston Villa can continue their success and
would love to cheer our former pupil on in the top division next
season!
