Deputy Principal’s Report
Cross Country Carnival
The 2017 Cross Country Carnival was held on Wednesday. It was a fantastic day with the sun shining. It was
great to watch all the students trying their personal best. The students are to be congratulated on their
exceptional behaviour. A ceremony to award the students’ achievements is currently being organised and
more information about this will be in next week’s newsletter. Students who have qualified for the District
Cross Country should have received a note. Please return these notes as soon as possible.
Thank you to all the staff, parents and students who contributed to a smooth running Cross Country Carnival.
Good luck to all of our runners that are representing Kariong PS at the Brisbane Water PSSA Cross Country
Carnival, at Wyoming Public School next Friday.
Debating
Kariong PS hosted a debate against Kincumber PS this morning in the Green Screen Room. The topic of the
debate was ‘That School Uniform Should Be Banned’. Our team performed exceptionally well with some
outstanding arguments, however, unfortunately they were runners up on the day, beaten by a very small
margin. Congratulations on your outstanding efforts and thank you to Mrs Fitzpatrick for coaching our
debaters and co-ordinating today’s event.
Soccer news
Our girls’ soccer team played against a very tough
Ourimbah side on Thursday. Although we did not win, the
girls played well and their sportsmanship was admirable.
A big thank you to the team’s coach, Mrs Clement, and to
our parents for assisting with transport on the day.

PSSA Netball
On Monday, the Girls Netball Team played Round 2 in the Knockout Competition against Point Clare Public
School. Unfortunately, we lost the game, although our team displayed excellent defence and exemplary
sportsmanship on the day. I would like to thank the parents who came to support the team and assisted with
transport on the day, and congratulate the team on their excellent effort and dedication throughout the term.
Own goal the decider – Soccer
This week at Ourimbah Soccer Oval, the Kariong Boys’ soccer team played against Ourimbah P.S. in the
second round of the NSWPSSA knockout competition. Both teams played exceptionally well and displayed
superb sportsmanship for the entire match. Ourimbah scored first to lead 1-0, then later in the match, Kariong
equalised the score with Jaylen kicking a goal from outside the box.
There were a number of missed opportunities from both teams to take the lead. Unfortunately with only
seconds left in the match an Ourimbah player scored an own goal with plenty of Kariong players applying
pressure on Ourimbah’s defence. Congratulations boys and best of luck in your third round match against
Gosford P.S.
Kariong Boys’ soccer team;
Elliot B, Jaylen J, Christopher S, Nathan W, Hamish M, Jacob W, Zac R, Jack W, Jared M, Bryson J, Riley

Community Consultation Project
In February 2017, parents/carers were invited to complete a survey to help Kariong Public School
develop a new School Plan for 2018-2020. There were questions about parent involvement and how
our school communicates with you. We also asked for your ideas about how we can make our
partnership even stronger.
We were thrilled with your response as we collected 167 surveys. Thank you so much for finding the
time to complete the survey.
The survey report was presented at Monday night’s P&C meeting. Here are a couple of findings and
graphs from the survey report. We will be sharing some more of the survey findings in the next few
newsletters.
Q1: How long have your children been attending Kariong Public School?
52% of parents/carers have been connected with our school for more than 3 years
30% of parents/carers have been connected with our school between 1-3 years
18% of parents/carers have been connected with our school for this year only
Q2: Our school is a Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) School. PBL encourages positive
behaviour from all students. Can you name Kariong Public School’s three core values?
Q3:Are you aware that Kariong Public School currently has a school vision statement? The
majority of parents/carers (almost 60%) were aware of our school vision statement:
Kariong Public School is a positive, engaging and supportive environment where
all students are valued and motivated to learn.
Our whole school community shows RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY and strives
to achieve their PERSONAL BEST.

Student Banking
The School Banking program provides children with an opportunity to
deposit money into their Commonwealth Bank Youth Saver account at
school each week. The program is about how often your child makes
deposits, not how much they deposit.
To encourage regular savings behaviour the program offers an exciting
Rewards Program. Every deposit earns your child a silver Dollarmites
token, and once they have collected 10 tokens they can redeem these
for a reward.
Student banking day is Thursday of each week.
Seasons for Growth
Dear Parents and Caregivers
Change and loss are issues all of us face at some stage in our lives. At Kariong Public School we recognise
that when changes occur in families through death, separation, divorce or related circumstances, young
people may benefit from learning how to manage these changes effectively. We are therefore offering a very
successful education program called Seasons for Growth. This program is facilitated in small groups and is
based on research that highlights the importance of social support and the need to practice new skills to cope
effectively with change and loss. The program focuses on issues such as self-esteem, managing feelings,
problem solving, decision-making, effective communication and support networks.
Seasons for Growth runs for eight weeks in school hours and each weekly session is 40-50 minutes. The
program concludes with a ‘celebration’ session. Later in the year each group will have the opportunity to meet
for two further sessions to build on their earlier learning.
Seasons for Growth will commence in Term 3 for Years 1-6. If you think your son or daughter would benefit
from participating in the Seasons for Growth program, we would encourage you to talk to him/her about this.
Should he/she decide to participate, please fill in the form attached and return it to the office. Please also
include a brief reason for participation e.g. divorce, separation, death etc.
For more information on Seasons for Growth, please go to the Kariong Public School website and click on
the link.
Kariong Public School is pleased to be able to offer this important program and we are confident that it will
be a valuable learning experience for those who request to be involved.
