How the EU works The European Union has its origins in the 1950s, when six countries, devastated by World War II, committed to working together to build their joint future in a radically new way. The treaties, which are the binding agreements between the Member States, set down the goals, the scope and the method of the cooperation. The method meant creating new European bodies (or ‘institutions’). Each body has a special task and membership. To solve problems, these bodies must all work closely together using their different powers. Discussing issues around a table to find the best possible compromise for all has helped keep peace in Europe for more than 70 years.
WHY DOES THE EU NEED
DIFFERENT INSTITUTIONS?
