Back in February, interest in racing was piqued by one of our students, Sam, who had been sailing Lasers at our program for the last year. As someone whose fondest memories from youth racing are in the Laser, I decided to try for the May 7/8 Santa Barbara Skiff Festi- val, and Sam was on board with the prospect of hard training and hard racing. Like the Opti fleet, the La- sers are extraordinarily competitive, but there is no “green fleet” for be- ginners; a trial by fire was to be ex- pected, so a trial by fire is what we trained for. Over the course of the next months, capsize drills, mark roundings, starts, sail trim, body- positioning, right-of-way situations, race! It was incredible to watch, and and much more was practiced.
