The Legal Aid Bureau of Buffalo's Criminal Defense Unit and Appeals and Post Conviction Unit have both full time
Staff Attorney positions scheduled to being in Fall 2022. We further have both "in semester" and summer
internship opportunities available in both units which may be paid or available for school credit.
Following an extensive training period, entry level Staff Attorneys in the Criminal Defense Unit perform trial level
work mainly in Buffalo City Court. Attorneys practice a holistic model of defense paying special attention to the
individualized needs of their clients while focused on positive outcomes both inside and outside the courtroom.
High priority is placed on counseling and client interaction in all phases of the criminal proceed.
Entry level Staff Attorney positions in the Appeals and Post Conviction Unit Staff handle appeals from start to
finish, including reviewing cases, meeting with clients, preparing the brief and oral argument. Most LABB cases
are criminal appeals, but attorneys may be assigned Family Court appeals and other post-judgment matters, as
needed. Strong research and writing skills are required.
In either case, a strong commitment to social justice and a demonstrated interest in criminal defense, particularly
the defense of indigent persons, is a desired quantity in any applicant. The Legal Aid Bureau of Buffalo is an

The Federal Public Defenders for the Western District of New York is dedicated to the vigorous defense of
indigent clients charged with federal offenses. The Federal Public Defender is authorized and funded pursuant to
the Criminal Justice Act, ("CJA"), 18 USC § 3006A, et seq. Our lawyers practice in federal district court in the
Western District, as well as the Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. We have offices located in Buffalo and

This is a Criminal Court attorney position located in the Department of Public Safety, Conflict Defender's Office.

Description of Organization:
• The public defender provides and promotes quality legal representation to indigent defendants facing a
loss of liberty in Ontario County.
• The public defender protects the community's interest in the fair administration of justice.
• The public defender provides constitutionally mandated legal representation in criminal matters to people
who cannot afford to pay for their own lawyer.
• The public defender handles matters involving felonies, misdemeanors, appeals, parole, probation,
vehicle and traffic, and some simple violations of law in Ontario County Court, Geneva, and Canandaigua City
Court, Drug Court, and the various Justice Courts in Ontario County.
• The public defender provides educational and outreach services to schools and community organizations.
• The public defender offers training to staff and other attorneys who handle criminal matters in Ontario
County.
• The public defender advises the county administrator and the Board of Supervisors on issues involving
criminal justice services.
• The public defender advocates for reform and innovation throughout the criminal justice system.
Internship Opportunities:
The Ontario County Public Defender's Office offers internships throughout the year for law school students.
During the course of the internship, students will be exposed to multiple areas of criminal law and the criminal
justice system.
