Bits and Tips ...
Tail Care
When washing a tail, work the soap into a
lather and then brush the tail to remove
the knots. The soap helps as a lubricant
in removing knots but doesn’t pull the
hair out of the tail. To remove the last
remaining tangles, use a mane comb and
work upwards from the bottom of the tail,
the theory here being you can remove one
knot at a time instead of ending up with
one giant knot at the end of the tail! Then
rinse the tail until soap free ... two tips for
rinse water: adding vinegar (few splashes,
not a whole bottle!) can help to repel flies,
and if you have a white tail to keep looking
bright, a little Purple Spray in the rinse water will help.

Help Needed!
Whilst we know many regulars of Charnwood Tails (c’mon you two, stand up and be counted!)
go and ask for a copy each month from their local source (or have it delivered), we have recently
had reports from readers that they haven’t been able to get a copy. It would be tremendously
helpful if readers could let us know where they do or can’t pick up a copy - please see list on
page 3 of current outlets. Please email info@charnwoodtails.co.uk or text 07971 535189 - we’ll
be very grateful!

Are you legal taking your friends horse to a show or vets?
                                   Bob Jewel, East Midlands Equine
As of February 2009 under E.U. legislation, there was a law change for moving horses/ponies in
trailers or lorries. Listed below are the changes:
As of February 2009 E.U. regulations now say that if you do not own your pony/horse and
transport other people’s ponies/horses, you must have a certificate of competence for drivers and
attendants, pursuant to article 17(2) of council regulation (EC) number 1/205.
What does this mean?
The above certificates are now compulsory if you transport anybody else’s horse/pony whether
you do it for reward or not.
How the new law works:
If you take your own pony/horse you do not have to do anything. However, if you take somebody
else’s pony/horse you need a certificate of competence. If you take your pony/horse and someone
else’s pony/horse you now have to take a groom with you and both you and the groom must
have a certificate of competence. If you are pulled over for a spot check and you do not have the
certificates, you will be fined up to £5000 per animal. We have been informed by DEFRA, Trading
Standards Authority and Police. They have been told to check private lorries and trailers to make
sure the law is being enforced, with no exceptions.
Listed below tells you if you need it or not:
• If you own the pony/horse you are ok, you need to do nothing yet
• If you are loanee of pony/horse then you need the above
• If you take you friend’s pony/horse to a show, a vet, a day out, etc. then you need the above
• Even if you do this for free you still need the certificates.
If you need anymore information or need to book a test please contact Bob at East Midlands
Equine for more details. Telephone 01509 856500 or e-mail emequine1@btconnect.com

                  The Horse at War
War horses were specially trained for use
in battle or individual combat. Army pack mules, 1942

A war horse’s training would generally
address its responsiveness to being
controlled without reins, tolerance for the
noises of battle, and its adaptability to the
weapons and armour the rider would be
using. In addition, some war horses were
trained to kick on comand, thus becoming
weapons in the exdtended arsenal of the
warriors they carried.
A common misconception is that a war horse was simply a horse in armour. In fact, much training
was required to overcome the horse’s natural aversion to the smell of blood, and its natural
disinclination to trample a person.
Prior to the development of plate armour, small agile horses were trained for use in battle by
various cultures for both cavalry and horse archers.
During the Middle Ages, large horses with the strength and stamina to carry both a knight and
his heavy armour into battle were highly prized. In addition to size, these horses were selected
for speed and trainability. The expense of keeping, training and outfitting these specialised horses
prevented the majority of the population from owning them.
Compared to the
medieval knights’ great
horse, most modern
breeds are small
and fast. However,
modern breeds of
draft horse such as
Belgian, Percheron
and Shire descended
from the huge horses
that carried armoured
knights and were often
armoured themselves.
In World War I, the
horse and mule
provided transport
power, and they
suffered the same
risks as the men. By
the start of World Nottingham Knights at Rempstone Steam Fair
War II, the use of
equine transport had
been almost entirely replaced by modern motor vehicles and the last troop of mules in the British
Army was disbanded in Hong Kong in 1976.

           RIDE WITH YOUR MIND
                            Attention!!

Where is your attention when you are with your horse? Does he know you’re there?
Or does he find you either a bit intimidating or so uninteresting that he doesn’t want
to be with you? Are you so scared you’d rather not be with him, but know you have
to look after him anyway?
So far we’ve talked quite a bit about how to organise our body, with various exercises for us
to experiment with to help us get a feel for making changes that will enable us to ride more
effectively and with more empathy for our horse. Now be honest, how many of you have actually
made a change and practised it for long enough for it to make a difference to you and your horse?
(Well done if you have – this is really challenging especially if you’re working on your own).
This brings me back to ‘attention’ or ‘focus’. If I say to you ‘don’t think of PINK ELEPHANTS’,
what do you immediately think of? Well, of course! This is a very quick illustration of the power
of thought, and where thought goes – energy follows. So if we can become aware of our thoughts,
we can direct them to help us become more focussed and therefore more able to direct our
horse in a positive, safe and fun way.
Successful people in all walks of life have the ability to direct their thoughts, and therefore their
energy, in a way that gives them presence, authority and charisma, or if used negatively can make
them intimidating or repulsive. Although some people seem to be born with this ability, like just
about anything else, it is a learnable skill.
Mental rehearsal is a classic example of directing our thoughts. Think about something you would
like to improve, for example, having your horse stand still calmly whilst you get on him. (If he can’t
do this – he isn’t really safe to ride at the moment). Before you go to your horse sit quietly for a
few moments (or practise before going to sleep at night), close your eyes and breathe slowly and
calmly through your nose. Now make a clear picture of how you want things to be, step by step,
see yourself smiling, have the sun shining, your horse is relaxed, and so on. Run this through your
mind many times, adding details as you go.
To help you have more ‘presence’, think of having a strong beam of light radiating out from just

  What Size Rug?

Whether buying a rug for the first time or
updating your horse’s existing wardrobe, it is
important to take accurate measurements as a
poorly fitting rug can slip and rub your horse.
Some manufacturers are generous in their
sizing, others may be less so, similarly the style
of rug and shape of your horse will have an
effect on the size needed. A 14hh cob will need

the chest and down the body to the quarters Riverside X Country Course
where you would expect the rug to finish. A tail All Year Turnout • Electric Fenced Paddocks

to work out the ‘how to’ of riding
(very different to the ‘what should
                                               be’ but rarely is!)
