FAREWELL Ms ETHERIDGE
We will miss you!
Dear Parents, Carers and members of the Barrenjoey High School Community,

It's a bittersweet feeling this week at Barrenjoey. Our much loved treasure of Barrenjoey High
School, Alison Etheridge who works in our Front Office area, will be leaving us at the end of this
week. Alison has seen almost all Barrenjoey has to offer, with having spent 27 years of her life
dedicated and committed to our school. The relationships she has formed with staff, students,
parents and our local community are absolutely amazing - and that's an understatement.

We are so proud of her extremely professional work ethic, whilst at the same time ensuring that
every student who asks her a question or seeks her assistance, obtains her 100% attention and
care. The countless phone calls, assisting parents and staff and work in our sick bay will never
be forgotten. Which such experience and longevity at our school, no wonder she is called our
'Oracle'. Her corporate knowledge will be difficult to replace, however, we have employed Jess
Thomas to replace the 'one'. We welcome Jess to our wonderful school and we wish her many
years of joy whilst working at our school.

Alison is also packing her bags and leaving the local area to move up to sunny Queensland. We
know that her moved to Queensland was not an easy decision, however, know it's the right one
to be with her family.

Alison - we wish you the all the best for the next stage of your journey! You will be very missed
at our school. We will ensure we have you on speed dial, just in case we need the answer to life
as we know it! Onwards and Upwards our colleague and friend!

TELL THEM FROM ME - Survey

Dear Parents and Carers,

TELL THEM FROM ME Student Survey

This term, Barrenjoey is taking part in the Tell Them From Me student survey. The survey
will provide us with valuable feedback on what our students think about school life, how
engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them.
Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help
them improve. The survey is completed online and is run by an independent research
company, The Learning Bar which specialises in school-based surveys.
Staff in schools will not be able to identify individual students from their responses. To
ensure confidentiality, participating students will receive a unique username and password.
Where fewer than five students respond to a question, the results will be suppressed. The
survey typically takes 30 minutes or less to complete and will be administered by the school
during normal school hours. Once the surveys are completed by students, reports are
prepared and in most cases are available to schools within three business days.
As well as schools getting student feedback, the Department of Education, through the
Centre for Education Statistics and Evaluation (CESE), has access to data from across NSW
and is running a research project to look at state-wide patterns of student wellbeing,
engagement and effective teaching practices. The research is looking at how these things
impact on student outcomes, including academic performance. Individual students will not be
identified in any CESE publications, and all information will be handled in accordance with
the relevant privacy legislation. Students’ personal information will not be disclosed by the
department to any other person or body other than as required by law.
This research will help schools in New South Wales to better understand how to improve
student wellbeing and engagement. It will also help teachers and principals discuss what
works to improve student outcomes.
If, during the survey, your child is uncomfortable, he/she can choose to stop the survey at
any time. The majority of questions in the survey can be skipped.
In the next week you will receive a Non Consent form and letter. If you do not want your
child to take part in the survey, please complete the form and return it to the school.

WELLBEING TERM 1

Wow! What a big term for wellbeing activities. After Covid rules left us being unable to run
events last year, we have started 2021 with a bang!

Year 7 enjoyed ‘Getting to Know You’ with Miss Hutchinson and Miss Claridge, where they met
in small groups to make new friends, play games, complete craft activities and make
connections with their year advisor and assistant year advisor.

In response to growing concerns and discussions in the community and national media, we are
leading discussions and workshops around consent and sexual assault.

Year 10 girls completed the Back Off program and the boys completed Secret Blokes
Business, aiming to empower them to understand informed consent. These programs have
been running at Barrenjoey for the past 20 years, and are always highly impactful.

Year 11 and 12 boys completed the Tomorrow Man workshop - Breaking the Man Code, which
‘disrupts old-school male stereotypes and redefines a more positive version of masculinity to
live by’ and was exceptionally well received by all the young men in the program.

Year 11 and 12 girls completed the Tomorrow Woman Workshop, which aims to ‘unpack the
history, expectations and facts of modern day womanhood to support women to reinvent an
unapologetic version of femininity for the women of today and tomorrow.’ Again, this was an
excellent workshop, where the girls fostered deep connections with each other.

In coming weeks, Year 9 will be completing a workshop called Smashed on risky behaviour
and LoveBites - a program on respectful relationships and Year 8 will be getting to know Miss
Attard and Miss Dickinson in small group workshops.

All parents have been emailed a letter detailing the events and costs for wellbeing for 2021.
Thank you for your support of wellbeing through prompt payment of the wellbeing contribution.

WORLDS GREATEST SHAVE – LET’S SUPPORT THIS GREAT CAUSE

                                                           Year 7 student Tully will
                                                             shave his long locks

Barrenjoey has a team participating in the World's Greatest Shave this March. All money
raised goes towards the Leukemia Foundation.

The catalyst for the event was Tully Poppleton of Year 7, who has been growing his hair
specifically for the event and is going to have it all shaved off.

Connor Mason is joining the team (getting a short haircut) and a few more students are
  getting permission to be involved.

The 'Great Shave' will take place at our next school Assembly on Friday 26 March. The SRC
will be promoting our team and participants over the coming weeks. We'd love your support to
promote to the students and community, as well as sponsorship if you are able!

If you wish to participate more directly, let me know!

Davidson Shield Cricket
On Monday February 22 our Open Cricket team
played Killara High School at Hitchcock Park.
Despite fielding a side comprising mainly year
 7, 8 & 9 students, Barrenjoey performed
admirably. Killara batted first and amassed a
total of 4 - 311. Sam Pace led the bowling
attack , taking 2-10 off 4 overs. Good batting
performances from our skipper Oli Kantor-
 Smith 25, Max Arnold 21, Riley Osborne 14 &
Isabella Zovi. Thankfully our friendly duck
appeared only 5 times this game. Looking
forward to term 4 games for our u/15 Manly
Shield & Open Manly Cup teams.
SPORT NEWS CONT:

Love was in the air at Barrenjoey this week as staff
WORLD COMPLIMENT and students celebrated 'World Compliment Day'
DAY on Monday 1st March, by sharing messages of
                                             gratitude, encouragement and positivity. Students
and staff actively made an effort to
give compliments about some of the things we
value in our community. Students received and
passed on compliments such as "I like spending
time with you" and "I bet you make babies smile"
with many students even taking these compliments
beyond the gates of BHS, into the local community.
Students told our reporters that it made them "feel
hunky-dory to give a compliment today" and "I was
so happy because I got given two compliments
today." Students were also surrounded by
                                             compliments that adorned the hallways,
playground and classrooms. We hope the
compliments don't stop here and we want to
remind you again, you are awesome just as you
                                             are!

YEAR 11 GEOGRAPHY EXCURSION
On Friday 19th February the year 11
                 Geography class accompanied by Mrs
Ferry spent the day at the coastal
                 environmental centre Narrabeen. We
were lucky enough to have ex
Barrenjoey student Tim Seaton as our
presenter and guide on the day.

                 The excursion supplemented work
                 being done on Biophysical
Interactions in class with the study of
                 Narrabeen lagoon and Collaroy
                 beach.

During the day students enjoyed the
view of the lagoon, drew sketches of
                 the coastline and undertook fieldwork
                 investigations. Students took
                 measurements and recorded data
                 within the environment.

                 At Collaroy students observed
                 different methods used to combat
                 coastal erosion.

The weather was excellent all day and
we enjoyed a fun and informative day
                 out.
