I am standing to change Unite, so we put you – the members – first once again.
I joined our Union over 35 years ago. I worked 28 years for Unite, including 16 years as
Regional Secretary. I won union recognition agreements, pay deals and disputes for members
across every sector. My trade unionism has always been about making a practical difference
to jobs, pay and conditions.
After standing in the 2017 General Secretary election, I was dismissed from my employment
with Unite. They thought I was finished but I never went away. I’m fighting harder than ever to
put our members first.
We need real change now, because Unite has been going down the wrong path.
• We have lost tens of thousands of members since 2017 and our current approach to ‘organising’ in the
modern economy isn’t working.
• We have been distracted by messing about in Westminster politics and being the backseat driver of the
Labour Party.
• We have wasted your hard-earned money and spent £98 million on a hotel and conference centre. We
should be a trade union, not a property developer.
This must all change. If you elect me I will:
• Put Unite’s legal, financial and industrial muscle behind you: defending your job, pay and conditions
above everything else.
• Freeze your membership subs for two years and clean up Unite’s finances so you get better value for
money.
• Ensure you get better and quicker help from the Union when you need it, online or by phone 24/7.
• Give Reps and Branches secure IT equipment, more training and better legal support.
• Create a £10m Unite Skills Fund to help you and your family gain the real skills – including proper
apprenticeships – that you need for the future.
• Reinstate Honorary Membership for retired members, and level up membership benefits for all retired
plus members.
• Deliver more for women members with equal pay audits and zero tolerance of harassment and abuse in
the workplace.
• Support Black and Asian Ethnic Minority members to secure full representation, and challenge racism
and discrimination of all kinds.
Your vote can deliver the change we need. Vote for a union we can all be proud of.
I am the only candidate in this election who is not backed by a political organisation within Unite. If you elect
me as General Secretary, my loyalty will be to you not to any narrow political faction. You won’t see me playing
student politics with your Union.
I am the only candidate in this election who has called for an independent and published inquiry into Unite’s £98m
hotel and conference centre. I will stop the next phase of this development so we waste no more of your money.
I am the only candidate in this election who is not currently a senior, serving officer of the Union. The only
candidate who has stood up and spoken out. The only candidate who represents real change, not more of the
same.
I have now been nominated by branches and workplaces across the whole of our Union. I’m deeply proud of
this. If you elect me, I will repay your trust and rebuild Unite across the whole of Britain, Ireland and Gibraltar.
We must meet the challenges of the post-Covid economy, where technology and ways of working are
changing fast.
If you want real change, so that we can focus again on defending our members’ jobs, pay and conditions,

I am the Workers’ Candidate.
I am standing to make real, positive change. Not for phony factional wars that belong in the
past.
I will take our Union back to the workplace.
As your General Secretary I will protect your job, your pay and your conditions. That will be
my priority.
For over 20 years I have led and won major disputes.
At 17 I was forced to lead my first walk-out to stop casual workers being exploited. From that day on I knew that
Unions could change lives.
I know how to win against bad bosses. I have a 100% track record of success - winning every campaign I have
led, including:
• Defeating ‘Fire and Rehire’ at Go-Ahead bus
• Leading Crisis Leverage at British Airways
• Victory over the BESNA in construction
• Stopping the end of wage bargaining at Yorkshire Ambulance
I have won for members’ across our Union.
That’s why I am the only candidate who is focused on Jobs, Pay and Conditions and not settling old scores.
I don’t belong to any faction and I am not supported by any clique of MP’s. I don’t have the machine of the
current regime.
That’s because my campaign is about serious change, not tinkering around the edges.
If elected I will be the first female General Secretary of Unite. I will make sure this will mean a better deal for all
of under-represented groups, including women.
I understand the barriers and I won’t be afraid to tackle equality issues head on at the bargaining table, rather
than just pass motions in a conference hall.
I worked with Jack Jones on Universal Benefits and I want our Retired and Community members to return to
campaigning on key issues.
I have not promised anything to anyone. No deals for votes.
Because we can’t afford more of the same. We need a Union that can win.
Many members’ are facing an uncertain future. Jobs are under threat, pay and conditions are under pressure.
The answer is not to spend more time in Westminster or to support a different Labour faction. We can’t rely on
politicians and I won’t be signing blank cheques for any party.
Over 20 years I have built a practical plan that will save jobs and grow the Union.
I have a programme for genuine change:
• I will protect and fight for Jobs, by leading better campaigns and making my winning tactics available to
all those that need it.
• I will improve Pay and Conditions, by growing our strength in the workplace and delivering concrete
bargaining plans.
• I will stop us becoming a branch of the Labour Party, by moving beyond factions and focusing on
policies.
• I will be accountable and put the members in charge, by increasing democracy and holding regular
meetings open to all.
• I will put equalities on the bargaining table, by taking it out of the conference hall and into the
workplace.
• I will support our Retired and Community members, by delivering dedicated budgets to campaign on
issues.
• I will take on the ‘undercutters’ and the race to the bottom, by organising all non-Union employers’

• I will make sure every member gets the service they deserve, by making sure calls are answered on
time, with more dedicated support and by making the Union easier to access.
Our Union is better than a war within the Labour Party.
I’m standing because I’m the only candidate prepared to deliver real, positive change.

The world of work is changing and so must Unite.
Now more than ever our union needs to come together, and you need to know that your
union is on your side.
My life experiences motivate me to make Unite the very best it can be. I was one of five,
dyslectic and had free school meals. I’ve been unemployed and know what it’s like to struggle
to pay the bills and put food on the table. I’ve walked miles for job interviews because I
couldn’t afford the fare and I would take any job I could find.
I joined our union as a bus worker and that changed my life. For 39 years I’ve walked in your shoes; listening,
learning and leading - from union rep and officer to assistant general secretary.
My priorities as we recover from Covid will be protecting your jobs, pay and conditions while keeping you safe
at work.
I recognise the challenges around homeworking and the difficulties, particularly women have faced, juggling
issues from caring to home schooling while continuing to work.
I will fight to address the underfunding and privatisation of our NHS, vital public services and the outsourcing of
secure jobs.
By putting your trust in me I will modernise and introduce change to:
• Support your reps at your workplace with new training, investment in technology and resources to help
you win at work.
• Introduce a freephone number and a ‘Unite Assist’ app, giving our members without reps’ support and
information, 24/7.
• Take every action necessary to deliver fairness and genuine equality at work
• Grow Unite in developing and expanding sectors and make trade union membership relevant to young
people and the millions without union protection.
I am proud to lead our amazing retired and community members and will continue to build on their work,
supporting and resourcing their activities.
I’m an experienced negotiator and have a track record of winning with members. I am proud to have led in talks
with government to deliver furlough for 11 million workers and their families through the pandemic. And I’ll
continue to argue for on-going protection for working people for as long as necessary.
I will not allow the pandemic to be exploited by opportunistic bosses, nor allow workers’ wages to be stolen to
line the pockets of multimillionaires.
I’m proud to have exposed the abusive use of zero hours contracts and secured over £1 million in back pay for
Sports Direct workers, and successfully fought the closure of plants across our nations saving thousands of jobs.
My leadership offers hope and a clear vision for decent, well paid, secure jobs for you, your children and
coming generations as we face automation in our workplaces and the transition of our economy to meet the
challenges of climate change.
I understand the impact of political decisions on every aspect of our daily lives, both at work and in our
communities. My experience tells me that to make progress we have to win at work but also build the political
alliances necessary to secure the trade union and workers’ rights, support, investment and opportunities we
rightly demand.
As your general secretary I will continue to listen and learn, to do what I have always done - stand with you
when you’re standing up against bad bosses and work tirelessly to secure the protections that you and your
families deserve.
I’m honoured to have received support from so many members in every nation and region of our great union as
well as the overwhelming support of our officers and staff.
It’s time to unite our union.
