Welcome to Kaikoura - TH - Kaikoura District Council
Kia Ora, Hello and a warm
welcome to Kaikoura!

Moving somewhere new is
always filled with challenges.
We’re a little district with just
over 3,500 residents in just
over 2,000 square kilometres.
Although we’re small our
District offers plenty, on land,
out on the water or up in our
skies. The Kaikoura District

This booklet contains information about local services, organisations
and activities that we hope will help you get settled in, and get to
know our District.

Whether you are here to help with the rebuild or have made the move
to Kaikoura permanently, we look forward to helping you make
Kaikoura home.

                    Mayor Winston Gray

PS This booklet is new - if you have any feedback please contact Vicki

CIVIL DEFENCE – EMERGENCY PREPARATION

Living in Kaikoura is different. It’s beautiful and wild and you need to be
a bit more prepared than folks living in a city.

Kaikoura District Council offer preparedness workshops both for home
and businesses. Call KD on 319-5026 for more information.
Everyone should be ready to look after themselves and their family for at least 72
hours.

Get to know your neighbours as they are one of the best sources of help in a disaster.

                                         15
Kaikōura District Council has an emergency alerting tool called ‘Gets Ready’. It is
fairly new, but is a game changer! What does it do?

 Allows Council to send real time email or text alerts specific to an area
 Allows people to register if they don’t have access to email or text so that
their neighbourhood champion knows to visit them in person or call them
         on a landline

Read more about it here: https://www.kaikoura.govt.nz/our-district/civil-
defence/kaikoura-gets-ready/

And sign up here: https://northcanterbury.getsready.net/ or by calling KD on 319-
5026 (extension number 237).

In an emergency, the radio is your best source of information. Make sure you have a
radio with fresh batteries that picks up local stations like these:

             · Brian FM - 100.3–great source for local information
             · National AM 567
             · National FM 101.7
Earthquake: Drop, Cover and Hold
If you are inside, Drop, Cover and Hold – do not run outside because things may fall
on you or you may fall and injure yourself.
If you are outside, move away from buildings, trees, streetlights, and power lines,
then Drop, Cover and Hold
Stay there until the shaking stops
Tsunami: The biggest threat to the Kaikōura coast is from tsunami generated close to
the coast that could reach shore in less than one hour. Tsunami are rare but you do
need to be prepared.

If you are near the coast and you feel a long (more than a minute) or strong (can’t
stand up) earthquake you should move inland or to higher ground immediately and
stay away for at least three hours. The first wave may not be the largest.

There are no sirens along the Kaikoura coast and there will not be time to issue an
official warning – do not wait for sirens, the earthquake is your warning.

                                           16
