NEALE’S WELCOME
Welcome to our fourth annual Daniher’s Drive.
If you are on your first Daniher’s Drive, we welcome you on-board and if you are
returning for your second, third or fourth event, we are delighted to have you back
in the convoy once again.
On behalf of the Board and staff of FightMND, we hope you have a wonderfully
enjoyable time with us over the 4-days of the 2018 Daniher’s Drive from October
11-14th.
Again, we have packed in many enjoyable events along the drive to ensure you
have plenty of fun.
Your involvement in this event contributes significantly to our aim and purpose of
generating greater awareness of Motor Neurone Disease in the community. The
Daniher’s Drive event raises critically needed funds to commit to research and
drug trials to find a cure while also providing assistive care equipment to many
Australians currently fighting MND.
In June, we had the most successful Big Freeze at the ‘G event, selling over
100,000 beanies and raising over $6.5million. With your input and involvement, we
are hopeful this year’s Daniher’s Drive will be the most successful one on record
too with almost 400 participants and 100 cars taking to the road.
The 2018 instalment of Daniher’s Drive has a superb itinerary ahead of it with the
magnificent Central Victoria region, the beautiful wine region of the Coonawarra
and the superb Bellarine Peninsula all key features of the route this year.
As always, the evening functions during our three nightly stopovers will be
highlights of the ‘Drive’ again. We also look forward to the community events that
we pause for to meet and thank the many locals along the way.
Your team’s fundraising efforts have been incredible, and we cannot thank you
enough for your commitment and support of the cause and our mission to achieve
a world free from MND.
From all of us at FightMND, we thank you sincerely for the part you play in making
the 2018 Daniher’s Drive a great success.
Kind Regards,
Neale Daniher
Vice-Chairman - FightMND

4WHO ARE FIGHTMND
FightMND is a not-for-profit registered charity,
founded in 2014. It was established to raise
the awareness of Motor Neurone Disease in
Australia, to increase funding for research
to find an effective treatment and cure and
to provide better care equipment for MND
patients. We have a clear objective – to a have
a world free from MND.
FightMND is Australia’s largest independent MND foundation focused on funding
large-scale, collaborative research and clinical trials. The generous donations
contributed by everyday Australians, right across the country, has enabled
FightMND to raise and commit millions to cure and care initiatives.
Australia has the best and brightest researchers that possess the same passion,
enthusiasm and commitment to finding a cure for MND as FightMND. FightMND
issues grants annually to allow these professionals to focus on beating the beast
in the labs.
To Cure
We are passionate about funding the best MND research to speed up discoveries
of potential treatments and, ultimately, to find a cure. FightMND has funded four
clinical trials, seven drug development research projects and a world-first drug
screening platform.
To Care
We are acutely aware, understand and strongly believe each MND patient and their
families have the right to participate and feel comfortable in their communities.
Providing them with access to state-of the-art, vital care equipment, to be able to
maintain independence, dignity and quality of life as they endure the debilitating
effects of MND is a priority of ours.
To Make Aware
FightMND continues to mobilise the awareness of MND and the need to continue
to raise funds in Australia by holding major public fundraising events, such as Big
Freeze and Daniher’s Drive. We are committed to making more people aware of
the devastating impact MND has on the lives of Australians, be they patients, their
families, carers, researchers or clinicians.
5DANIHER’S DRIVE THE 2018 EDITION People in search of a great time, with great people who want to support an incredibly great organisation and cause are the people that represent what Daniher’s Drive is all about. Now well established as one of the major fundraising and awareness campaigns for FightMND each year, Daniher’s Drive is a fun, community-based event that tours regional areas of Australia spreading the word and growing awareness about Motor Neurone Disease and the need to fund critical research in a quest to find a cure for ‘The Beast’. This year, the convoy of 100 cars, transporting almost 400 participants, will traverse the highways of central Victoria, south-east South Australia and the Bellerine Peninsula raising funds and sharing the fun of the Drive with regional communities along the route. With nightly stopovers in Horsham, Mt. Gambier (SA) and Geelong, and community engagement in towns such as Woodend, Stawell, Nhill and Coleraine, the 2018 renewal of Daniher’s Drive is going to be the biggest and best ever. Among the contingent in this year’s Drive are many members of the Daniher family, led by Neale Daniher who is bravely fighting MND. Joining the Danihers are a number of ex-players from Melbourne and Essendon Football Clubs, friends and families of people affected by MND and others who, despite little connection to the disease, are attending to have fun while supporting an important cause. This is why we need to fight. 6
PARTNERS
Without the generous support of our Daniher’s Drive
partners, the event would not be the success that it is
every year. We offer our gratitude and sincere thanks
to all of our valued partners for their commitment and
contribution to supporting Daniher’s Drive.

COMMUNICATION
PROCESS & USE OF APP
Drive communications and briefings
It is imperative that all participants are kept fully up to date on all the key
information relating to the Drive while en-route.
There will be various forms of communication used during Daniher’s Drive for
participants and the Drive executive team will liaise and communicate with team
captains directly for critical information to share among team members.
Morning briefings
Each morning, 30 minutes prior to the advertised departure time, a briefing will be
conducted in the breakfast dining area, unless otherwise advised.
It is a requirement that at least one member (preferably 1st designated driver
for the day) of each team is in attendance for each briefing.
The daily briefings will include information about changes to itineraries, expected
arrival and departure times from stops, any known roadworks and expected
delays, community events and any requirements of the teams before arriving at
the nightly destinations.
Communications
Direct communications to all participants will be via text messages from the
Drive executive. These messages will be for key and time sensitive information
about the event. The executive team may communicate some information to team
captains only.
Once a message has been sent to team captains, a follow-up message will also be
sent via WhatsApp to alert all participants.
FightMND App
The app is back and will be available for downloading prior to the Drive. The app
will feature information about itinerary, upcoming locations, accommodation,
top fundraising teams, nightly events, auction items and push notifications
sent for important general information that will make your experience the best
experience possible. Make sure you download the free FightMND app from iTunes
or Google Play.

With thanks to Geoff Vickers from
Bayside Coaches in Moorabbin
for another year of incredible
support, the Fun Bus will again
be a highlight of this year’s event.
The Fun Bus will play host to a range of activities, games and challenges as the tour
weaves its way around the route over the four-brilliant days of Daniher’s Drive.
This year, the bus has a new look, brandishing the FightMND logo prominently as
well as images of Neale, our valued researchers, families living with MND and also
action from the AFL coaches sliding at this year’s Big Freeze 4 at The ‘G.

21RISK & RESPONSIBLE
BEHAVIOUR POLICY
FightMND’s reputation forms the cornerstone of its efforts to fundraise and in turn support people
in the fight against MND, something we are extremely proud of. FightMND aims to establish
safe event environments free from the adverse effects of unsocial behaviour, excessive alcohol
consumption, unlawful discrimination & sexual harassment. FightMND seeks to maintain a
high level of professionalism, safety and respect towards all people, at all times. The Daniher’s
Drive Risk & Responsible Behaviour Policy is aimed at ensuring that the Drive is a safe and fun
environment, by educating persons on expectations and minimising behaviours and conditions that
could lead to personal injury, injury to others or inappropriate behaviour of any kind.
Application:
The Policy applies to all drivers, passengers, support teams, staff, Foundation Board members,
Daniher’s Drive committee members, sponsors, ambassadors and other persons attending
Daniher’s Drive events – known collectively for the purpose of this Policy as “Participants”. A full
risk assessment has been completed for 2018 and in the event of a serious incident involving
a drive participant, member of the public or damage to any property, a set of Critical Incident
Protocols will be enforced and these protocols are listed below in the policy.
Expected Behaviours:
• All Participants have a responsibility to take reasonable precautions for their own safety,
health and that of others at all times.
• All Participants are expected to behave in such a way that the Daniher’s Drive is free from
inappropriate behaviour. This includes excessive alcohol consumption such that behaviour
becomes hazardous to themselves or others, aggressive or violent behaviour, harassment
or sexual harassment of Drive participants and others.
• All Participants must be within the legal Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) limits when
driving and note which type of licence they have as BAC limits differ depending on licence
type. The standard BAC in Australia is 0.05 – more useful information can be found at
drinkwise.org.au
• The event team ensures a supply of breathalysers that Participants can access to ensure
all persons are driving under the BAC limits at all times. Drinking diminishes concentration
and coordination and all Participants are encouraged to check their BAC before every drive.
• All Participants must treat all other Participants and members of the broader community
with respect, courtesy and avoid all types of abusive language at all times.
• All staff and participants should notify Geoff Vickers immediately of any inappropriate
behaviour, incidents that they feel are dangerous or could lead to an adverse outcome and/
or dangerous driving during the event.
• Should a Participant be found engaging in any behaviours listed in this policy or inferred
by the nature of the policy, that participant and their team may be asked to leave the Drive
immediately and may be banned from future Daniher’s Drive and FightMND events.
• Team captains are responsible for the behaviour of their team members at all times.
22Critical Incident Protocols:
In the unlikely event of a reportable or criminal incident on the Drive:
1) Refrain from speaking to the media. Refer all persons asking questions to the
FightMND Communications Manager Andrew Holmes or Drive Media Liaison Ian
Cohen. The standard media response should be “I am not aware of the facts, it is best
you speak with our media team ”. If you are repeatedly asked for comment, please
repeat the above statement as many times as you need.
2) If anyone beyond or outside the media is seeking details about an incident, please
refer them to Geoff Vickers, Risk Manager or Penny Collins, Drive Coordinator.
3) If a member of the public approaches you following a critical incident, please avoid
making any commitments on behalf of the event organisers, our Risk Management
Committee will decide on the best course of action.
4) In the event of a critical incident, please avoid making or posting any comments or
photos on any form of social media. Remember if an incident is serious enough to
warrant police investigation, any comments you make on social media may become
evidence or implicate you in the incident.
Vehicle and driver requirements:
• It is a requirement that your vehicle is thoroughly checked prior to the event.
• It is a requirement that each team has a member with roadside assistance cover.
• Each team is responsible for their vehicle repairs during the event.
• NB: common parts may not be available in every area that the Drive route goes
through, you should consider carrying any mechanical items that are specific to
your vehicle.
• It is recommended that each team has at least one Telstra mobile (there will be
areas without any mobile phone signal).
Team drive pre-requisites:
• All participants must be at least 18 years of age.
• Entry fees and levies must be paid in full prior to the event as per entry forms.
• All drivers must have a current driver’s licence.
• All vehicles must be roadworthy and registered in Australia.
• All vehicles must have comprehensive or third -party insurance cover.
Event route and driving rules
• The Drive course has been set by the Drive Coordinator and will not be taking the
most direct route between destinations.
