GETTING STARTED
Here are a few tips to get you started and to hit the ground running!
1. Break up the total target
...into three or four separate fundraising sources. This could include a couple of small
events, a large event and donations from family and friends.
2. Consider various networks
...such as work colleagues, family, sports teams, neighbours or other friendship groups.
If you plan events and target different groups of people for each fundraiser, you will find
that the donations will add up quickly.
3. Focus on things that work for you
One woman on a previous trip hosted dinner parties in her home and raised $12,000!
Another sold Cadbury chocolates at work and raised $5,000 without leaving her desk.
We have had fundraisers bake cupcakes and raise $2,000 in a series of workplace
cupcake drives. (Never underestimate a good old-fashioned cake stall!)
4. Use your fundraising Supporter page
Personalise your page and tell people why this cause is important to you. Share the link
to your Supporter page with friends and family. Your supporters will receive their tax
receipt instantly. It is also a great way to track your fundraising progress.
5. Ask!
This simple step is often forgotten. Be direct. The more personal, the better. Pick up the
phone, write a letter or send an email. Tell friends and family what you are doing and
why and ask for a donation. Don’t forget to thank them when they do donate!
3 -Catherine Hamlin Fistula Foundation Fundraising GuideSETTING UP YOUR SUPPORTER PAGE
What is a Supporter page?
A Supporter page is a special webpage with a URL (link) that you can use to support a
charity or cause. Your Supporter page isn’t just an online collection tin. You can also use it
to: inspire others with a story about the cause, post updates, images and videos, tell your
social networks and ask others to help you make a real difference.
You can ask anyone to help you by simply sharing the link to your page, through which they
can easily donate and leave a message of encouragement. All donations are processed by
Everyday Hero and passed on to Hamlin.
NB: You will be creating an Individual Supporter Page.
Getting started
1. Your starting point is...

Once you have set up your account, you will see a page similar to this:
Here are a few suggestions for maximising your fundraising potential. We strongly urge you
to do these ‘4 Small Actions’ as we’ve seen them increase fundraising success with past
participants.
1. Upload a profile picture
a. Click the link in the blue box or click the ‘Update Page Photo’ button in the green
space with your initials.
b. Next to the subheading ‘Page Photo’, click the ‘upload’ button and choose an image
from an existing file on your computer.
8 -Catherine Hamlin Fistula Foundation Fundraising Guide2. Add a personal story
Click the link in the blue box or scroll down and click the ‘Edit Story’ button. We’ve given
you something to start off with, but the more personal the better. Why are YOU so
passionate about the work of Hamlin? What inspired YOU to jump on board?
3. Post an update
It’s easy to do – just write in the ‘Post an update’ box and click the blue ‘Post’
button and your page will be updated straight away. We encourage you to keep doing
this throughout your journey to keep it exciting and give anyone visiting your page more
information on the work and your progress.
4. Share your page’s link
Just copy and paste the link either in the blue box or the address bar and send it via
email or social media to as many people as possible!
If you have any issues setting up your fundraising page, please contact
Maddy at maddy@hamlin.org.au or call 02 9440 7001.
9 -Catherine Hamlin Fistula Foundation Fundraising GuideTIPS TO MAXIMISE DONATIONS
• Ask… and ask again
Nothing beats a direct ask when it comes to fundraising. Send an email (or better yet,
ask in person) to your friends, family and colleagues. Include a link to your Supporter
page. A few weeks later, send a reminder email to those who haven’t donated. Just
because someone didn’t donate after the first ask, doesn’t mean they won’t this time!
• Ask for a specific amount
Ask your supporters for a specific amount and tell them what their donation could be
used for in Ethiopia. For example, you might ask for $50 which could provide physio to
a fistula patient or, $600 which is the cost of an obstetric fistula operation that will
change a woman’s life.
Your donation at work:
$10 could buy a pair of shoes for five patients who arrive barefoot
$30 could provide a dress, nightgown and bedding for one patient
$40 could provide good nutritious meals for one patient for the duration of their stay
$50 could provide physiotherapy for one patient
$100 could provide a support pack for a patient who is returning home
$600 could provide life-changing fistula surgery for one patient
$4,500 could provide a one-year scholarship for a student at the Hamlin College of Midwives
• Thank your donors directly
This is really important. They have done an incredible thing by supporting you. Make sure
you let them know how great they are.
• Thank your donors on social media
Posting a thank you to a donor on Facebook with a link to your Supporter page is a great
way to encourage others to donate.
• Provide updates on your progress.
Give updates to friends and family on your fundraising progress. This is a great way to
keep them engaged. The blog feature on your Everyday Hero Supporter page is perfect
for this and can be shared to Facebook.
10 -Catherine Hamlin Fistula Foundation Fundraising GuideFUNDRAISING EVENTS THAT WORK
Here are some examples of events that have been successful for past participants. Please
note, you’ll need to fill out and return our ‘Authority to Fundraise’ form prior to doing any
public fundraising events.
• Host a film screening
This event has the potential to raise big money if run well. Add a raffle, and a screening
could raise $4,000. Check out our ‘how to’ guide for hosting a film screening on page 14.
• Sell fundraising chocolates
If you or someone close to you has a large workplace, this is an easy way to chip away at
your fundraising target. You can sell your own baked goods or Cadbury fundraising
chocolates (https://www.fundraising.com.au/).
• Host a morning or afternoon tea
This is a great way to involve your friends and family. Check out our ‘how to’ guide on
page 13.
• Host a Bunnings BBQ
Another great way to involve friends and family. Take some posters and tell people what
you are fundraising for. Also take some donation slips on the day for larger donations.
Contact your local Bunnings BBQ for full details. We can provide you with a letter of
endorsement for this. (NB: not all stores will support charities working outside of
Australia.)
• Host a yoga or zumba fundraiser
Ask your local yoga or zumba class to host a fundraiser. You can set a fixed price to join
the class or ask for a donation to attend.
• Hold a raffle
A raffle is an easy way to bump up your fundraising at an event. You only need three
good quality prizes. Sell your tickets for $5 each or three for $10 (more if you have
extra-awesome prizes).
11 -Catherine Hamlin Fistula Foundation Fundraising Guide• Hold a garage sale or market stall
Have you got any old clothes or bits and bobs that you don’t use anymore? Are you an
expert at making beautiful candles? Why not hold a garage sale from your home or have
a market stall at your local weekend markets. Make sure you encourage visitors to make
a donation (have donation slips on hand for larger donations that will require a tax
receipt).
• Forgo Christmas presents or birthday gifts.
Ask friends and family to donate to your fundraising page instead of giving you gifts.
You can be creative with your fundraising, and we recommend that you play to your
strengths. For example, if you work in a health related profession, you might find that
your colleagues would gladly take interest in this cause, so hosting a workplace event
might be very successful.
12 -Catherine Hamlin Fistula Foundation Fundraising GuideHOW TO HOST A MORNING/AFTERNOON TEA
Your event can be big or small, morning or afternoon and with tea or champagne. Host it
at your home, at school, at church or at work. Here are a few pointers for how you can go
about having a successful and exciting morning/afternoon tea.
1. Set a date and pick a venue
You can have a morning/afternoon tea almost anywhere! You can host it at your home
or, if you’re feeling adventurous, in a big function hall to cater for up to and over 150
people. Past trip participants have hosted events of all sizes! Be creative – why not host
it at a local park or beach event?
2. Organise food and drinks
Consider a combination of your own catering and, if you have willing friends, get them
to bring a plate.
3. Set your ticket costs and plan for donations
We recommend suggesting a donation amount to attend. Guests can donate via your
Supporter page and receive a tax receipt. Past participants have had a lot of success by
working out costs first, setting a ticket price and making sure there’s a substantial
profit.
4. On the day
If you have access to AV equipment show the 9 minute DVD trailer of ‘A Walk to
Beautiful’ at your event. Check in on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter using the hashtag
#HamlinEthiopianAdventure.
5. Invite guests and promote your event
Invite as many guests as you can and give them as much notice as possible. Include an
RSVP date so that you know how many you are catering for. Start gathering helpers to
help you on the day – many hands make light work! If you’re planning a bigger event,
encourage friends and guests to organise tables. See page 1 for tips on how to
maximise the potential of your events through promotion.
13 -Catherine Hamlin Fistula Foundation Fundraising GuideHOW TO HOST A FILM SCREENING
Here is our guide on how to plan and host a film screening for maximum results. A good
screening can raise $4,000 - $6,000.
1. Set a date, pick a venue and choose a film
We recommend hosting the screenings in cinemas. Cinemas are set up to screen films
seamlessly plus they are able to hold a large number of people. Independently owned
cinemas tend to be cheaper than the bigger chains such as Hoyts, Village Cinemas and
Greater Union etc. Make sure you shop around though for the best deal. Choose a film
that has broad appeal – this will ensure the best possible numbers.
2. Organise food and drinks
If you can organise donated drinks and nibbles you will set yourself up for the best
possible fundraising result. You will need to discuss this with your venue. Given the
nature of the event, usually venues are happy for hosts to bring nibbles and drinks if
their license permits it. Please note we cannot issue tax deductible receipts for food and
beverage donations or discounts.
3. Set your ticket costs and plan for donations
This might take some negotiation! It is ideal to score the venue for FREE in order to
maximise funds raised on the night. However, you may find that there are costs involved.
We recommend asking the cinema to reduce individual ticket sales to the event to
around $8, then you can on-sell those tickets for $25 each (or maybe even $30 if
nibbles or a complimentary drink are offered). Talk to Maddy about the best way to
handle ticketing for this event as you may choose to use a ticketing page like TryBooking
(www.trybooking.com) or Eventbrite (www.eventbrite.com.au) . At the conclusion of the
event when people are leaving, have a few friends at the door handing out Hamlin
Fistula Ethiopia brochures and donation slips.
4. On the day
Allow yourself plenty of time and be at the venue long before your first guests arrive.
Give yourself 15 minutes for a pre-screening speech to introduce yourself, the Hamlin 19
Day Ethiopian Adventure and Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia. If you’re having a raffle we
recommend drawing the raffle and then rolling the film.
5. Invite your guests and promote your event
Share the ticketing page on all your social networks. Talk to us about promoting the
event in your local media. See page 16 for tips on how to maximise the potential of
your events through promotion.
14 -Catherine Hamlin Fistula Foundation Fundraising GuideHOW TO HOST A TRIVIA OR BINGO NIGHT
Some of our past participants have had their biggest successes at trivia and bingo nights,
raising over $9,000 in just one night.
1. Set a date and pick a venue
These types of events tend to attract a lot of people; the venue you choose depends on
how many people you think you will have at your event. Church halls, school halls or
social clubs are ideal for a family affair, while a bar or function centre might be great
for an adults-only event. You might choose to run this evening independently or with an
external events company. Think about who your host will be.
2. Organise food and drinks
If you’re getting friends and other volunteers to help out consider cooking in advance –
dishes that can be reheated at the venue are ideal e.g. curry, chilli con carne, soup.
If your venue allows you to cook or provides catering then get adventurous and go
gourmet – get a barbeque going, fish and chips or pizza! If you decide to run a theme
for your night, match the food and drink to it.
3. Set your ticket costs and plan for donations
Ticket costs will be dictated by how much it costs for you to set up and run the event.
We can give you some suggestions on this. Throughout the night encourage people to
donate – have donation slips ready to go.
4. On the day
If you’re planning on hosting a trivia night – have your questions, answers, writing
paper/forms and pens ready to go. Plan trivia rounds that cover various topics. Throw in
a few fun games in between rounds to keep the energy up. If you’re planning on hosting
a bingo night – make sure you have bingo supplies (available from party stores or make
your own), including numbered ping pong balls and a large plastic vessel, handy. Several
websites offer printable call sheets and bingo cards that you can use for free. Consider
adding some other money-making elements to the night e.g. a raffle or silent auction.
You could even have your trivia host or bingo caller auction off donated products and
services between rounds/games or have a donation jar at your sign-up table.
5. Invite guests and promote your event
Invite as many guests as you can and give them as much notice as possible. Include an
RSVP date so that you know how many you are catering for. Start gathering helpers for
the day – many hands make light work! See page 16 for tips on how to maximise the
potential of your events through promotion.
15 -Catherine Hamlin Fistula Foundation Fundraising GuideTIPS TO MAXIMISE YOUR EVENTS
Don’t be scared to go above and beyond! Here are a few ideas for building upon your events
to make them even more successful.
• Aim high!
Set an ambitious fundraising target for each event (e.g. An event raising $4,500 could
provide a one-year scholarship for a student studying at the Hamlin College of Midwives)
• Remind your guests why you are passionate about Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia
Do an introduction talk at any event you host – talk about why you’re doing the Hamlin
19 Day Ethiopian Adventure. Suggest a donation amount to your guests and let them
know how their donation will help. Remember these helpful donation handles:
Your donation at work:
$10 could buy a pair of shoes for five patients who arrive barefoot
$30 could provide a dress, nightgown and bedding for one patient
$40 could provide good nutritious meals for one patient for the duration of their stay
$50 could provide physiotherapy for one patient
$100 could provide a support pack for a patient who is returning home
$600 could provide life-changing fistula surgery for one patient
$4,500 could provide a one-year scholarship for a student at the Hamlin College of Midwives
• Send a reminder
Remind your friends and family about your event and follow it up if you haven’t received
an RSVP. If they can’t make it, still direct them to your Supporter page to make a tax
deductible donation.
• Make social media your friend
As well as emailing, send your family and friends a personal Facebook message. Share
your Supporter page url on Facebook. You may choose to create a Facebook event (not a
page) for your fundraising event. As well as this, make the most of social media by
sharing content from our Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia Facebook page:
https://www.facebook.com/DrCatherineHamlin/
16 -Catherine Hamlin Fistula Foundation Fundraising Guide• Hold a raffle on the day
A raffle is a fabulous way to bump up the funds you raise at your event. We recommend
three great prizes rather than ten not-so-great prizes. For best results, sell tickets for
$5 each or three for $10. To make things easier, buy unique coloured and numbered raffle
books (available at newsagents) rather than noting down names and phone numbers.
Selling tickets can be a feeding frenzy so this makes it super fast and easy!
A creative twist on a raffle that some of our past hosts did was a ‘key raffle’. They made
a hamper of donated prizes and vouchers valued at around $500 and wrapped a lock and
chain around it. They then sold keys in envelopes for $5 each – the winning key unlocked
the chain and won!
• Get a little help from your friends
Consider getting a group of friends to help you out at your events and in promoting your
fundraising adventure. Get them cooking, prepping venue details and helping decorate.
Not only does it make everything easier and mean you can reach out to more people,
but it also makes the whole journey a lot more fun.
• Play the DVD trailer, ‘A Walk to Beautiful’
This trailer is a nice, easy and emotive way to introduce family and friends to the cause.
17 -Catherine Hamlin Fistula Foundation Fundraising GuideBANKING YOUR FUNDS Your Everday Hero Supporter page is the most time and cost effective way to collect funds. Supporters can donate directly to your page and will receive instant individual tax receipts. If you have an event, we encourage you to set up a laptop or iPad with your Supporter page open - so people can donate directly to this page. If you collect cash donations on the day, we would encourage you to keep the cash and make a credit card donation to your Supporter page, in your name. For any cheques received, please post these to us at PO Box 5396 Turramurra, NSW, 2074. If a tax-receipt is required, be sure to include the contact details of the person giving the cheque. Please also clearly put your name so we can attribute the money to your fundraising page. If you have any issues banking your funds, please contact Maddy at maddy@hamlin.org.au or call 02 9440 7001. 18 -Catherine Hamlin Fistula Foundation Fundraising Guide
ADVENTURERS SHARE THEIR EXPERIENCE... Neil’s adventure “In 2015, my wife Annette and I decided to raise much-needed money for Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia, and to take up the opportunity of a ‘trip of a lifetime’ with a Hamlin Ethiopian Adventure to this amazing country. My overall impression of Ethiopia is “Wow!” I want to come back and see the rest of this amazing country. The natural scenery, the people, the culture, the history are all worth the price of admission, and that is not even considering the work of Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia. I am in awe of those who work to have such a positive effect on the lives of so many. From the venerated Dr Catherine Hamlin herself and the unbelievable Beletshachew Tadesse who runs the Desta Mender rehabilitation facility, to the students and staff of the College and the patients and staff of the hospitals and even the remotest facilities. I will never forget the nurse aide who, with a hearty laugh and in her hospital uniform showed off her skills in the eskista (Ethiopian shoulder dance) in the breezeway outside the Hamlin Fistula Hospital in Bahir Dar. Beyonce could still learn a move or two! I also want to celebrate the amazing 2015 tour group, because through hard work and generosity of both time and spirit, we were able to send over a quarter of a million dollars to help Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia continue in their stellar work.” - Neil Jenifer’s adventure “After reading ‘The Hospital by the River’ many years ago its always been a dream to visit Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia and to help the beautiful women suffering every day. Having four children of my own, I know exactly how lucky we are to live in a country with all the medical assistance we need and Catherine Hamlin is an inspiration to us all. Last year my dreams became a reality when I went on the Ethiopia trip and got to see first hand the amazing work of Catherine and the staff. I’m so grateful to be part of such an adventure and extremely proud to have raised money to help this amazing cause.” - Jenifer 19 -Catherine Hamlin Fistula Foundation Fundraising Guide
Adele’s adventure “Last year was a bit of a spiritual journey for me. I chose to go on my own not knowing anyone but now I have beautiful life long friends from that trip. Ethiopia was an amazing experience that I’ll never forget. What the Hamlins have done and created over the last 50 odd years is phenomenal and it was so wonderful to see what they have done and are continuing to do. Plus it makes you realise how much money they need to keep it going. I would thoroughly encourage anyone who is thinking about doing the trip to just do it – they’ll never regret it. I felt very proud of my achievements – something that I did for me and I succeeded.” - Adele Angela’s adventure “I read about women suffering obstetric fistulas in Ethiopia in the book Half the Sky, which is about the human rights of women around the world and it broke my heart... Everyone who signed up for the tour through Huma Challenge was required to raise $10,000. We flew over in November and actually got to see how the funds we raised would help. We got to visit the main hospital in Addis Ababa twice, as well as a regional clinic, the midwifery college and Desta Mender. It was amazing to meet the women and hear their stories first hand. They were all so sweet and extremely grateful for the donations from Australians. Many said their life would not have been worth living if it wasn’t for Hamlin. The tour was a really good balance between visiting the hospital, regional clinics and the midwifery college run by Hamlin and sightseeing. Ethiopia has a surprising number of attractions for tourists. We visited the UNESCO World Heritage-listed churches at Lalibela, which were carved underground, saw traditional music and dancing being performed at dinner, visited lots of vibrant markets and stayed at an eco-lodge near Gondar, where we went hiking to see baboons in the wild. At the end of the trip we took part in the Great Ethiopian Run – a 10km fun run through the streets of Addis Ababa that 40,000 people take part in. It was a great atmosphere, with 20 -Catherine Hamlin Fistula Foundation Fundraising Guide
both traditional and modern Ethiopian music playing, horns blowing and water fights at var- ious times during the race. All the foreigners taking part on behalf of charities are invited to a “pasta party” at the Hilton Hotel the night before to carb load, and we had our photo taken with Ethiopian long distance runner Haile Gebrselassie, who won the gold medal for the marathon during the Sydney Olympics and founded the Great Ethiopian Run. I have so many fond memories of the trip and the people we met along the way. One of my favourite parts of the experience was driving through the beautiful countryside where kids shepherding livestock would run alongside our car and wave, or dance on the side of the road, at the sight of us foreigners. It was an experience I will never forget.” - Angela ABOUT HAMLIN FISTULA ETHIOPIA Founded over 60 years ago, by pioneering Australian, Dr Catherine Hamlin and her late husband Dr Reg Hamlin, Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia has restored the health and dignity of over 60,000 women who have suffered one of the most horrific childbirth injuries – obstetric fistula. This injury is entirely preventable – but in rural Ethiopia, where women have little or no access to maternal healthcare, they will be in agonising labour for days, if their birth is obstructed. They almost always lose their baby and suffer horrific internal damage that leaves them incontinent, isolated and ashamed. Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia works to mend this trauma, healing these women through surgery, rehabilitation and counselling - so they can be whole again. We are also relentless in our commitment to preventing childbirth injuries in the first place. We do this by recruiting, training and deploying midwives to rural clinics where they are needed - working to ensure every woman has a safe delivery. Thanks to the generosity of donors around the world, our patients are treated free of charge and our midwifery students receive education scholarships. 21 -Catherine Hamlin Fistula Foundation Fundraising Guide
