Social and recreational opportunities provide outlets for self-expression and self-development,
promote mental and physical health, improve skills and enhance community participation. These
experiences improve participants’ quality of life and also give them a chance to develop a true
    sense of freedom and independence.

All Between Friends programs have a focus on fun. Between Friends W.E.S.O.A.R! Programs
are also designed to promote a sense of belonging, provide opportunities to connect and build
friendships, and to develop skills for success in life. Participants, parents and caregivers who are
seeking activities that support the development of specific skills such as social skills and physical
literacy can use the following guide to choose the most appropriate program.

Winter programs 2018 - Between Friends
Children & Youth Under 18
If you are interested in a community activity that is not offered through Between Friends’
programming, or want to be involved with your peers in a new activity, I.C.A.N! might be
for you.

I.C.A.N! Services are intended to help connect participants to community based social and
recreational activities. Between Friends supports this initiative in two ways:

        • First – we partner with Community Recreation Partners and provide them with inclusion
and disability awareness training to increase their capacity to include people with
           different abilities

        • Second – where a partnership does not exist, we provide a RIF* to support staff and
participants directly at the program of your choice.

*The trained staff from a partner facility or from Between Friends is called a Recreation Inclusion Facilitator (RIF) and
their role is to ensure that everyone has a successful inclusion experience. The RIF does not serve as a 1:1 community
aide, but instead will support in the inclusion process for all.

I.C.A.N! Anywhere
We have many Community Recreation Partners throughout Calgary and surrounding areas, such
as SOGO Adventure Running, Trico Centre, YMCA’s of Calgary, Pumphouse Theatre, University of
Calgary and many more! Any program or camp can be an I.C.A.N! activity. If you are interested in
registering for a program, whether it be with one of our partners or not, let us know and we can
provide a RIF to enhance the experience for all!

I.C.A.N! Registration
In order to ensure we can provide adequate support for our participants, we require at least four
weeks notice prior to the program start date. This will ensure that we have time to connect with
our Community Recreation Partners or hire a RIF to support in providing and inclusive experience
for all. Although access to our I.C.A.N! Services are included in your annual membership fee, any
fees directly associated with an activity (registration fees, materials, etc.) are determined by and
paid to the facility. Contact us for information on our current Community Recreation Partners.

irst – we partner with Community Recreation Partners and provide them with inclusion
and disability awareness training to increase their capacity to include people with

friends in motion: bowl-a-thon
Between Friends will be hosting our 4th Annual Friends in Motion: Bowl-A-Thon in March. We had
a fantastic time in 2017 and can’t wait for you to join us again! All funds raised from this event will
directly support the quality programming we offer for children, youth, and adults with disabilities.

        Friday, March 9, 2018 | 5:00pm
        Century Bowling – 1010 42 Ave SE
This event is a great opportunity for teams, corporations, families and friends to come together
and raise funds for Between Friends. Teams of up to five bowlers can register and be paired with a
Between Friends member to compete for the highest score in this challenging and fun tournament.
Teams are encouraged to dress in costume, come up with a unique team name, and of course, raise
funds for a great cause! Challenge friends, family and colleagues to help children, youth, and adults
in our community access quality programming. Every dollar raised translates into an unforgettable
experience for a person with a disability.

Aktion Club YYC is a community service volunteer group
                               for adults with disabilities

Aktion Club YYC members develop initiative and leadership skills, give
back to their community, integrate into society, and gain new experiences.
In partnership with the Kiwanis Club of Calgary Northmount, Aktion Club YYC provides opportunities
for adults with disabilities to demonstrate the dignity and value of citizens living with disabilities.

Aktion Club YYC hosts one meeting each month on a Monday night from 7:00pm – 8:30pm. During
these meetings, Aktion Club YYC members discuss upcoming volunteer initiatives, discuss fundraising
efforts, explore new opportunities, and come up with social activity ideas. Typically there are two
