The Rosebery Way
1. All members of our community are shown the level of respect and kindness
that we would expect for a member of our family.

2. High expectations are never set by creating a fear of failure; they are set by
demonstrating belief in each other’s ability to achieve.

3. Members of our community who do not meet our expectations are supported
to help them to do so.

4. We never ask anyone to do anything that we would not be prepared to do
ourselves.

5. We act with integrity by doing the right thing whether or not anyone is
watching.
How are we going to be Rosebery
      G.R.E.A.T in Year 9?

            Being responsible and

How can you help your daughter
        this year?

• Attendance – this plays a crucial role in attainment.

• Punctuality

• Planners

• Challenges

• Uniform

• Students must be at their desks
ready to start at 8.30am. If your
daughter is sick you must call the
  absence line. 4 minutes late
• Mrs Digby-Thomas, our attendance
officer will log all absence. If you each day = 2
know your daughter will miss days of school
school please let us know as far in
  advance as possible. missed
• Please try to make appointments through the
outside of school hours as this will
  affect your daughters’ year
  attendance.
• Attendance is carefully monitored.
Secondary education has
                  changed…
• All GCSEs have been rebranded.
• Your daughters will sit new GCSEs scored
  as 9-1 rather than A*-G.
• Less coursework, more rigorous exams.
• Linear courses requiring more rote
  learning and memory recall.
• We have to prepare for this now.
• EBACC is compulsory for students.
Year 9 Reports
What does it look like at Rosebery?
Flightpath of progress
How progress looks in
reality…
Celebrating success and
        doing the right thing
1. Achievement points are given out for lots of
different things. From demonstrating respect or
helping a friend to a great piece of work in class.
2. Headteacher’s Commendations are for
   particularly impressive behaviour.
3. Tutor group half termly prizes include Pizza lunch,
   ice cream van…
4. Final achievement assembly – Fitbit, echo dot
   and Wireless Headphones.
5. Please share if your daughter does anything
outside of school that you think we should
   celebrate.
Options…
If your daughter is really unhappy with
           their option choice:

           1. Students need to have a
conversation with their form tutor and
the subject teacher of the subject
              they want to drop.
           2. They return back to their form tutor
              who discusses what change they
want to make. This may involve
speaking to the subject teacher they
              wish to change into.
           3. Student emails Mrs Browne and sets
up a meeting with her to arrange
              changing options.
           4. Mrs Browne finalises this decision with
              Mr Lach (Deputy Headteacher –
              curriculum).

Year 9 Maths
Students will be starting their Maths GCSE this year
This is to give the students more time to study the
                more difficult new GCSE
We aim to cover 35-40% of the GCSE content this year

Students will study topics in these areas:
• Number
• Algebra
• Ratio and Proportion
• Geometry and Measures
• Statistics and Probability

Please see the front of your child’s Maths book for a
more detailed breakdown and order of topics
Structure of the GCSE

  Paper 1 Non-Calculator 33.3%
  Paper 2 Calculator 33.3%
  Paper 3 Calculator 33.3%

There is no controlled assessment at all for Maths.

As you can see there are two papers where calculators can
be used.

It is therefore crucial that your child brings their
calculator every lesson so that they become proficient in
using it.
How can your child improve at maths?

                1. Students have their own login to Hegartymaths.
They will be set homework on this site, however
they can login at any time and work independently.
There are videos for the entire GCSE course.

Since the start of this term, the top 5 students who have
                answered most questions are:
How can your child improve at maths?

                 2. If you are keen to purchase a revision guide or
workbook at this early stage, these are the ones
                 which we recommend.

It must say grades 9-1 and EDEXCEL on the
revision guide to ensure it is the correct one.

3. Please encourage your child to communicate with their Maths
teacher.
All the Maths staff are happy to remind students of a method or
go through a topic that they found difficult. Or set them extra
work on Hegartymaths should they want some.

Why do we have both pathways?
Separate science is much more difficult. It has more content to learn and the extra
content is more challenging.

Combined is more suitable for the majority of students at GCSE where they are working
towards many different qualifications.

It is better to have two excellent GCSEs from combined rather than three lower grades
from separate science.

 Combined science does lead onto A-level and gives an excellent grounding.
 Some schools do not run separate science anymore due to the pressure of fitting in
  extra content.
 Both courses are viewed equally by employers, colleges, 6th forms and universities.
It is the grade they look at, not the pathway.
Header
                      Pathway decisions
These will be decided upon at the end of year 9.

We will use their end of topic assessments from all three sciences and their end of year
exams to make the most appropriate decision for each student.

The pathway chosen will be the one that will put them on course to achieve the highest
grades possible for them.
