Our Mission: At Zion Lutheran School, God's love works in and through His people. In a nurturing environment and
through academic excellence, children grow in their love of learning and in their love of Jesus.

Message from Mrs. Koch…
Happy New Year! I hope everyone’s first week back was great! We are going to “hit the
ground running” here in January! We have a lot going on so make sure to read carefully.
I wanted to make sure to call your attention to the last week in January. Our school and
Lutheran Schools across the country will be celebrating National Lutheran Schools’ Week! We
do this every year and it’s always a fun-filled week! Be watching next week for an email from
me with details about the week’s fun but just to name a few things- we will have a Scholastic
Book Fair that week, Preschool is having a Pool Party one day and “Donuts with Dads another,
Elementary will have a virtual visit from “NED’s Mindful Mission” and will also get to see a Fire
and Ice Science Show on Friday! All of this to celebrate our school that we love! Watch for
details soon!
As part of National Lutheran Schools’ week our Kindergarten through Eighth Grade
students will be singing in church the weekend of January 22-23. Here is the sign up to select
which service your child will sing in https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C044FADA62DABF85-
national. The service times are Saturday night at 6pm and Sunday morning at 8:15am and
10:45am. The deadline to sign up for a service time is January 16th. At that point students will
be assigned a service to sing in.
Thank you for all that you do to make our school special. We love having your children
here everyday and the role we get to play in their lives!

“Doing all things in LOVE”,

Mrs. Koch
Interim Principal, ZLS

School News

Upcoming Important Dates:
   ● Tuesday, January 11th - K-8 Early Dismissal 1:45 is CANCELED
   ● Friday, January 14th and Monday, January 17th - No School Preschool thru 8th Grade

K-8 Report Cards: Second quarter report cards will be sent home on Thursday, January 13th
in your child’s weekly communicator.

K-2 & 8 vision and K-3 Hearing Screenings, required by the state of Illinois, will be conducted
by Mrs. Balsters on Tuesday, January 11 and Wednesday, January 12. Re-screening, for those
qualifying, will take place the following week. Assume that “no news is good news” and if
needed, you will receive information via mail. Also, remember that this is a screening and your
child’s health care professionals are still the best to see if you have a concern. Vision screening
is not a substitute for a complete eye and vision evaluation by an eye doctor. Your child is not
required to undergo the vision screening if an optometrist or ophthalmologist has completed and
signed a report indicating that an examination has been administered within the previous 12
months.

2022-2023 K-8 Tuition Assistance: LESA (Lutheran Elementary School Association) provides
tuition assistance to families who struggle with the cost of Lutheran elementary school tuition (K-
8th only). Applications will be available to submit online beginning January 1st on the FACTS
website: https://online.factsmgt.com/ga/inst-application/inst/4FG82. The deadline to submit the
application is April 1, 2022, with the required documentation submitted by April 10, 2022.
Schools and families will be notified via email of award determinations from LESA on May 26,
2022. Payment of a $35 per family, non-refundable application fee is required at the end of the
application process to complete and submit the application. See attached flier. (Please note:
Zion Lutheran School will use the information submitted in your FACTS application for tuition
assistance thru the school so you will only need to apply one time to be considered for both the
LESA Scholarship and other Zion Tuition Assistance. You must apply for the LESA Scholarship
first in order to be considered for assistance from Zion Lutheran School.)

The Kids Heart Challenge is coming soon! This is our major service project during Lutheran
Schools Week, January 24-28. Fundraising packets and information are coming home TODAY
with all students in grades K-8. This year you don’t want to miss going on a road trip with the
Heart Heroes! Check out the fun mile markers we have planned for the fundraising levels this
year! Packets are due back on January 27th, which is the day of the event. Students in grades
K-5 participate in Jump Rope for Heart while students in grades 6-8 participate in Hoops for
Heart. All the students need to turn in a permission slip and raise $5 in order to participate.
Zion has raised over $100,000 over the years we have participated. Thank you for your
support of the American Heart Association. See attached flyer for more details.

Chapel Offerings: During the months of January and February we will be collecting items to
make “homeless care kits”. We are collecting hand towels, bar soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes,
travel shampoo/conditioner, sturdy combs, and nail clippers as well as monetary donations. So
far we have collected $12.90 in chapel offerings.

JEANS DAYS ARE BACK AND BETTER! During the months of January and February
students can pay $1 to wear jeans. New this year- students may also pay $5 to have a “Free
Dress Day”. All money collected will go towards our chapel offerings for the months of
January and February to help with “homeless care kits”.

K-8 Group Picture Day: Wednesday, February 9th group pictures will be taken for the
yearbook. Please bring your basketball uniforms and Student Council shirts.

Give Back to Schools: Office Depot and Office Max are giving schools 5% back in credits for
FREE supplies when a purchase is made of qualifying school supplies. When placing an order
online, provide Zion Lutheran School’s ID 70030289. When shopping in a store, provide our
school’s name and ID to the associate. Once our school has earned $10 in credits within the
quarter, we will receive a merchandise certificate to purchase supplies!

                                         Scrip News

Tuition Profit: Grade school and Preschool parents earned $1497.61 towards their tuition by
participating in the scrip program 1st semester! Profit earned from purchasing scrip August 1st
thru December 17th, will be applied towards the January tuition payments. If your tuition is paid
for the year, it will continue to accumulate and be deducted from next year’s tuition. We are
very excited about the 100% profit going towards the tuition account. If you haven’t used scrip
yet, it’s not too late to start earning towards your May tuition payment.

Kohls Scrip Cards: Did you know that you can use Kohls scrip to make an in-store payment
on your Kohls charge account? For every $100’s purchased, $4.00 will go towards your tuition.
