A Year to Celebrate
A Message from our Chair
As I look back on the last two years as Chair of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation Board of
Directors, I have great pride in the important work that is being done by our Foundation to strengthen
healthcare. On behalf of the Board of Directors I would like to extend great thanks to you, our donors, who
have made it possible for us to reach many milestones.
Since 1991, more than $38 million has been raised, initially to build the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, and
then to ensure that our healthcare institutions are providing world-class care for all Cape Bretoners.

Sean’s Story
Catching for Cardiac Care
At 23 years old, Sean Ferguson never dreamed he would find
himself worried about his health.
In June 2016, one month before he was set to marry the love

“Finding a nice and safe place to live is difficult when you don’t have steady employment – but is even more
difficult when you’re trying to get on a good path with your mental health.”
Donnie spent time moving from housing situations with family, then to boarding houses which he describes
as not ideal for anyone suffering with mental health illnesses. “Living in a boarding house means you have
one room out of a larger house,” he says as he thinks back on harder days. Imagine all the possessions you’ve
collected and accumulated over the course of your life had to be placed in to a 10 by 12 bedroom. Imagine
that you share a bathroom with strangers who live on the other side of a paper thin wall. Imagine you share
kitchen space with others and cannot make your dinner at the time when you become hungry. Well, Donnie
doesn’t have to imagine. He’s lived it.
“I have been a member of Crossroads Clubhouse for 6 years. I have grown in so many ways since then,” pride
comes over Donnie’s face.
Recently, Donnie was eligible to apply for the newly built SHIMI apartments, a partnership between New
Dawn Enterprises, Share Support Recovery, the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation, and the Nova
Scotia provincial and federal government.
“When I picked up the call that I got the apartment, it was one of the best days of my life,” Donnie remembers.
The SHIMI units, supportive housing for individuals with mental illness, are apartments that come fully
furnished and equipped with laundry facilities in each unit. The apartments are connected in partnership
