Why
New Zealand?
You may have never been to New Zealand but you will have seen us in the movies,
on the sports field and in business and innovation. However, there is a lot more
to New Zealand than The Hobbit and winning the Rugby World Cup (twice in a row).
The first thing you will notice the minute you step off the plane is how clean and green
New Zealand is. The air is fresh and pure, the visibility is often unlimited. There’s a
natural beauty waiting for you to explore.
People are friendly, happy to show you the way and share some local knowledge.
You can travel around the cities and countryside in confidence, knowing that
New Zealand is one of the safest and most peaceful countries in the world.
New Zealand is a truly multi cultural society and welcomes the world as visitors
and as new migrants. You can enjoy a real mix of cultures and experiences.
Yes, New Zealand is far away- but that makes it safe from the troubles of the world.

Why
Christchurch?
There is a real buzz about Christchurch. Christchurch is New Zealand’s second
largest city and it’s your gateway to our world famous great outdoors. Inside the city,
there is an estimated $US30 billion to be spent in the region over the next five to eight
years. The city is building a state of the art future, driven by safety, community and
connectivity. Christchurch is the place to be.

Christchurch is not only one of the most beautiful cities
in the world and best located but also one of the most
exciting places to be right now. It is reinventing itself
every day. But we can’t do this alone. Christchurch’s
economic growth has left gaps in the labour market and
created new opportunities for budding entrepreneurs –
we need highly talented people to help redefine the future
of this region. I am proud to be a part of this time in our
history as the city’s Mayor and hope that you can join us
and be a part of the changing landscape of our city.
    Lianne Dalziel
    Mayor of Christchurch

Stephanie’s story
Originally from Malaysia, Stephanie had her heart
set on studying speech therapy at UC. However,
she was missing several key prerequisites for
entry. Stefanie spent four months in the UCIC
programme, gaining the credits she needed and
settling into life in a new country.

‘UCIC helped me in so many ways. The classes
are small so we got to work closely with our
lecturers. We learned practical skills about how
to study and write assignments. And we did lots
of activities off-campus as well. For Biology we
went bird watching. It was fun!

Better yet, I got to meet lots of other
international students. We all clicked straight
away. It helped me feel more comfortable. I still
hang out with the friends I made there.’

Following UCIC, Stefanie successfully gained
entry into the Speech and Language Pathology
degree. Now in her first year, Stephanie loves
the energy in class.

‘My teachers are very outgoing. There’s lots of
discussion, it’s not the usual boring lecture. My
classmates are very friendly too. If you don’t
know something, you just ask!’

Pathways

Your pathway to a UC education could not be easier. You can either come directly
into UC or through one of our pathway partners.
If you need extra support with your English language, then Christchurch College
of English Ltd (CCEL) provide in-depth programmes to help you gain direct entry
to your chosen university programme without having to take IELTS (International
English Language Testing System). CCEL is also on campus, so you will still be
surrounded by the vibrant campus life.
UC is the only university in New Zealand with a Navitas pathway college on campus-
UCIC. This gives you an alternative entry point if you do not meet UC’s standard entry
requirements or simply if you need extra support during your first year of study.

Xavier’s Story
Originally from India, Xavier was
inspired to move to New Zealand because
of the opportunity for work-life balance.
‘I chose to come here because I wanted
a good lifestyle as well as challenging
career opportunities. So I enrolled in
my Masters of Business Management.

Right from the start the people at UC
helped me with my visa processing and
other documentation. When I decided to
convert my student visa into a work visa
they guided me through that process too.

Now that I’ve graduated I’m planning
to apply for my New Zealand residency.
Being at UC helped me gain enough
points to qualify. As part of my course I
did an internship with Tait Electronics
which gave me work experience points.
I also have extra points for being a
Masters graduate.’

Now employed by the Canterbury
District Health Board as a project
coordinator, Xavier says he’s in
Christchurch to stay – thanks to UC.

‘Coming to New Zealand was the right
decision. I loved my experience at UC.
I have friends, and I can go on adventures
as well as pursue an exciting career. I’m
very happy that I’m here.’
