You may notice this year’s cover looks a little
bit retro. That’s because we have included a
selection of performances designed to take you
back in time, at least for a little while. And we’re
sorry, but no we can’t make your hair grow back.
There is classic country, old-school rock’n’roll,
and instrumental music from centuries past. We
have vintage tunes from some of the smoothest
eras, an iconic Canadian writer, and tucked in among these, we are very
happy to support new music, physical theatre for young audiences, and
an intimate look at the art of song writing.
We have performances of old favourites and new experiences; some will
be fun and some thought-provoking; others will be informative or giggle-
inducing. We have gathered all this in one space for your enjoyment, and
all you have to do is make your own selections.
We are, as always, grateful for your support of live performing arts. It can
be a tough business to be in, so you can be assured those who are in it
are passionate about their craft. Thank you for turning off the TV, putting
down your devices, and venturing out of your homes. Thank you for
bringing your kids, your neighbours, and your friends to our space. Simply
put, thank you for making us part of your lives.
Welcome to Horizon Stage, Up Close and Personal.

Nice Horse
    Friday, September 20 - 7:30 p.m.
    Country Music
Nice Horse is what happens when four bold, brilliant, and badass women
get together to raise a little hell—and play a little music at the same
time. This Alberta-based band is out to turn the tables on the country
music world and show the guys that they can rock—and party—just
as hard. Sure, there are plenty of strong female country artists in Daisy
Dukes out there, but try to name another self-contained unit that plays
their own instruments and writes songs as potent as the new feminist
anthem “Mansplainin’” and the band’s roof-raising single “Pony Up.”
They’ve had their share of surprised reactions as well from people
unaccustomed to seeing an all-female rockin’ country band, but they
manage to take those in stride with their infectious humour. It’s partly
to be expected when you’re breaking new ground, and in some ways the
women of Nice Horse see themselves following in the platform-heeled
footsteps of the Spice Girls by offering their own version of Girl Power,
albeit with a rootsy twist. The bottom line is that if you’re looking for a
good time, Nice Horse is more than willing to take you along for the ride.

Lloyd Spiegel
Saturday, September 21 – 7:30 p.m.
Blues Music
Multi-award winning Australian artist Lloyd Spiegel returns to Canada
delivering a unique solo concert experience. Blending jaw-dropping guitar
chops with a commanding voice, powerful songwriting, storytelling and
comedy, it’s no wonder that he’s described as an “Oz Roots & Blues Icon”
by Rolling Stone Australia. Spiegel is a trailblazer in his field and one of
his country’s most recognized players, recently being named in Australian
Guitar Magazine’s list of the 50 greatest Australian guitarists of all time.
Spiegel has toured the globe with frequent visits to Europe, New Zealand,
and the United States where he has performed at major festivals, theatres,
and iconic juke joints as well as supporting the likes of Ray Charles, Bob
Dylan, and Etta James on tour. He has sat with the founding fathers of
modern blues from Brownie McGhee to Luther Allison and more recently,
found great success in Japan, performing sold out concerts at Tokyo
Disneyland. Lloyd’s live show is about his connection with his audience,
giving people a couple of hours off, and having them leave with a smile
on their face.

    Saturday, September 28

    Performance at 7:30 p.m.
    Multi-Disciplinary Celebration
This awe-inspiring visual arts and live
music performance is based on Robert
Service’s famous poem, set in the
    snow-bound north, which first appeared
in Service’s books of poems, Songs of a
    Sourdough, published in 1907. Christine
    Hanson’s wonderful musical compositions
    accompany what is probably Service’s
best-known poem. The show enhances the
    poetry’s different colours, nuances, tones,
and ranges. Varying from traditional jigs,
reels, and country waltzes to southern
    swing and frosty musical soundscapes,
she perfectly evokes the bizarre, tragicomic
setting of the poetry. The seven musicians
and a narrator are lovingly backed by slides
    featuring the eye-catching artwork of
    renowned artist Ted Harrison.

Kenny Hess: The Songs
That Wrote Country Music
Saturday, October 5 - 7:30 p.m.
Classic Country Music
Enjoy the songs that made the legends and the stories behind those
songs, performed by country music hall-of-famer Kenny Hess and his
award-winning band. Born in small-town Saskatchewan, Kenny Hess cut
his teeth singing the songs of Charlie Pride, Kris Kristofferson, and George
Jones. Fast forward a few years as Kenny established his multi-award-
winning career opening for the likes of Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, and
Willie Nelson. Creating The Songs That Wrote Country Music was a truly
natural process for him that evolved out of his deep and abiding love
for classic country music and his behind-the-scenes industry glimpses
– from backstage green rooms to Nashville’s Music Row writer’s rooms
and all the stops in between. Kenny has now created an extraordinarily
entertaining show, based on the songs that grew the roots of country
music, and the impact of those iconic songwriters and artists on a genre
that continues to flourish today.

TerZettto
    Tuesday, October 8 - 6:30 p.m.
    Physical Theatre
Three doors, three chairs, three wooden boards...
    One light bulb...
In this timeless setting, the very different worlds of three clowns will
collide. Gradually forgetting their own individuality, they build rapport
around what they hold most dear: their playfulness, their ‘joie de vivre’
    and an uncontrollable imagination.
Struggling with their own silliness and enthusiasm, which sometimes
prevent them from seeing further than the tips of their toes, they meet,
size each other up, experience some friction, and create new bonds based
on their unique abilities. For one, it is the flexibility of their body; for
another, it is the pleasing tone of their voice; for the last, it is the sheer
excess of their constructions. Through various scenes forged with humour
and flair, this performance examines the topic of human relationships.
It inspires playfulness, joy, and—most of all—lots of laughter, as these
three clowns have a few tricks up their sleeves.

Jimmy Rankin
Tuesday, October 22 - 7:30 p.m.
East Coast/Country/Roots Music
Jimmy Rankin is a renowned Canadian songwriter with a long string
of hits with The Rankin Family and from his solo albums. He joined the
family group as a young teen, and soon became co-lead singer and
songwriter of such classics as “North Country”, “You Feel The Same Way
Too”, and “Movin’ On.” His name is synonymous with the East Coast sound,
and he was one of the very first writers to bring it to a national and
international audience. His 1994 Juno-winning single “Fare Thee Well
Love” has taken on a life of its own, having been sung by choirs around
the globe, it was voted the #1 East Coast song of all time by CBC listeners
across Canada in 2013. As a solo artist, Jimmy has been ruling the charts
since his 2001 debut album Song Dog, with such hits as “Followed Her
Around”, “Here in My Heart”, and “Cool Car.” His crowded mantle includes
five Juno Awards, seven Canadian Country Music Awards, and a whopping
27 East Coast Music Awards.

Red Dirt Skinners
    Saturday, November 2 - 7:30 p.m.
    Folk/Folk Rock Music
Widely regarded as one of the most innovative acts to come out of the UK
in recent years, the sublime genre-defying sound of the Red Dirt Skinners
is created by husband and wife team, Rob and Sarah Skinner. If you like
songs influenced by Pink Floyd, Simon and Garfunkel, Supertramp, Crosby
Stills and Nash, or David Bowie, coupled with some epic storytelling,
humour and heartfelt emotions, you’ll love this duo, who have had
success in both national and international awards in several genres.
The Skinners refuse to be pigeonholed; their audiences always describe
them as ‘refreshingly different’. Drawing on influences from more genres
than would make sense to list, the Red Dirt Skinners’ sound is instantly
recognizable. Comfortably blending exceptional, almost telepathic
harmonies with the unique instrumentation of soprano saxophone
and acoustic guitar, audiences fall in love with the Skinners.

Jake’s Gift
Thursday, November 7 - 7:30 p.m.
Dramatic Historical Theatre
Horizon Stage is pleased to bring back this production to commemorate the
75th Anniversary of the Juno Beach campaign. Jake’s Gift is a multi-award
winning one-actor play about a Canadian World War II veteran’s reluctant
return to Juno Beach for the 60th Anniversary of D-Day. While revisiting the
shores of Juno Beach, Jake encounters Isabelle, a precocious 10-year-old
from the local village. Isabelle’s inquisitive nature and charm challenge the
old soldier to confront some long-ignored ghosts – most notably the war-
time death of his eldest brother, Chester, a once promising young musician.
At its heart, Jake’s Gift is about the legacy of remembrance and makes
personal the story behind one soldier’s grave.
Since 2007, Jake’s Gift has played at festivals and theatres in over 250
communities across Canada, including international stops to Washington State,
the UK, and Normandy, France, for the 70th, 73rd, and 75th Anniversaries
of D-Day, and sold out shows at Horizon Stage. 2019 marks their 13th year
of touring, and Juno Productions and Jake’s Gift continue to garner awards and
rave reviews whether playing in small rural towns or big city centers.
Join us for a short Q&A with the actor following the performance.

Christopher Hall and the
     Comic Quartet
     Saturday, November 9 - 7:30 p.m.
Classical Music with a Sense of Humour
In this music and laughter-filled chamber music show, comedian
Christopher Hall, accompanied by a string quartet, demystifies the
rather formal world of chamber music. Enjoy great classics from the
quartet’s repertoire, excerpts from Mozart, Boccherini, Schostakovitch,
Bach, and more, as well as Christopher’s hilarious anecdotes behind the
music. Christopher Hall is the former principal clarinet for the Orchestre
Métropolitain in Montréal who found working in an orchestra far too
serious! So now, instead of joking around while sitting in the orchestra
pit, he performs as a stand-up comedian, and does various television
and radio shows in both English and French. He has appeared in such
prestigious comedy festivals as Just for Laughs,
The Winnipeg Comedy Fest, and The Grand

Ken Lavigne: Three
     Knights with a Tenor
     Saturday, January 25 – 7:30 p.m.
     Popular Music Celebration
Canadian Tenor Ken Lavigne’s new show features the music of three
British Knights: Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, Sir Paul McCartney, and Sir
Elton John. With music from these prolific artists inspiring young and
old alike, Ken aspires to carry on the tradition by making a career doing
     classical crossover performances.
While paying tribute to three of the world’s most celebrated musicians,
this show is not a tribute act. Rather, it is a celebration of some of Ken’s
own favourite “shower songs”, which came together over many months of
studying the mountain of work of these three legends. Songs like “Black
Bird”, “With a Little Help from my Friends”, “Think of Me”, “Rocket Man”,
and “Your Song” will be interspersed with Ken’s own original pieces.

Exultation
     Tuesday, January 28 - 7:30 p.m.
     Classical Music with Spoken Word
Exultation is an intoxicating music and storytelling collaboration.
Award-winning classical pianist Sarah Hagen performs all 13 preludes of
Rachmaninoff’s Opus 32. Spoken-word artist and former Canadian SLAM
champion, Brendan McLeod, intersperses stories and poems.
The result is a narrative journey through Rachmaninoff’s life, from his
exile from Russia to his battle with depression, tireless work ethic, and
dedication to beauty. Exultation explores the estrangements, losses,
and redemptions at the heart of contemporary political and social life.
This multi-talented duo combine the intensity and passion of the music
with a torrent of words, building to a crescendo every bit as powerful as
     Rachmaninoff’s compositions.
Horizon Stage audiences will remember Sarah Hagen from her previous
performances featuring the works of Robert and Clara Schumann, and
Brahms. She has also performed at Carnegie Hall and across Canada
     and Europe.
Brendan McLeod is a writer, spoken word artist, and singer. Founder of
The Fugitives, he is the recipient of many music awards and nominations
including Poet of Honour at the 2012 Canadian Festival of Spoken Word.

Tiny Islands
Saturday, February 1 – 2 p.m.
1920s and 30s Jazz Music
There’s no more exciting way to introduce kids to a variety of musical
instruments than through the upbeat, can’t-sit-still jazz of the 1920s
and 30s.
Hailing from a musical family, Tim Sars, veteran leader of Vancouver’s
popular Carnival Band, has over a decade of experience entertaining
and engaging young people and their families with fun, spirited and
participatory music. When Tim teams up with his brother Nathan and two
more musicians, the quartet becomes Tiny Islands.
In this super-fun show, Tiny Islands engages kids of all ages with
irresistible tunes by jazz greats like Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway, and
Fats Waller. Some of you may remember when Tiny Islands entertained
crowds at the 2017 Canada Day Celebration. We loved them so much
we’ve invited them back to be part of this Horizon Stage season.

Ben Crane
     Thursday, February 6 – 2 p.m.
     Western Music and Storytelling
From the Alberta ranchlands just east of Rocky Mountain House comes
western country singer and songwriter Ben Crane. His love for the west
country and the outdoors comes through not only in his music, but in his
     artwork as well.
Ben’s musical stylings are rooted in traditional country, with hints of
bluegrass, jazz, blues, and swing, and range from old cowboy ballads,
to recently-written songs of the western lifestyle, and straight-ahead
gospel songs that pack a punch; all delivered with conviction and a
     warm personality.
Music has been keeping Ben busy for over 25 years. With six albums of his
own, and countless others under his belt in various capacities as producer,
engineer, arranger, session player, or vocalist, he is making a significant
mark in the western music field. His live shows are agriculture-oriented
and full of clean rural humour. Screen-projected artwork adds a unique
element to his show, while his daughter’s accompanying fiddle and vocals
     illustrate his family values.

Singer Songwriter Night
with Ryan Langlois
Saturday, March 7 – 7:30 p.m.
Acoustic Music Exploration
This evening will be an intimate exploration of the art and craft of
songwriting. Hosted by Alberta songwriter Ryan Langlois, it will feature
a panel of artists who are passionate about telling stories through music.
In the tradition of the world-famous songwriter rounds of Nashville,
and many festival side-stages, the format will include each songwriter
sharing backstories of their songs, and insight into their writing process.
Each artist will play a few of their favourite songs, and will also be
challenged to perform a cover of someone else’s work in their own
stripped-down style. Expect the evening to involve laughter, behind-
the-scenes turmoil, and vulnerability – any of which can be the basis of
a good song.
The former lead singer of The Boom Chucka Boys, Ryan Langlois’ solo
career has earned him three Alberta Country Music Award nominations,
and second place in the Project Wild Country Artist Development Program
in 2018. He is a barstool balladeer who can turn ordinary moments into
lessons in wisdom and grace. Every time he takes the stage, he gives all
he has to offer, and something special happens. You can see the energy
crackle through his veins like electricity.

     The Audience Customized Tribute Concert
This audience-customized evening is part rock concert….part rock
tribute….and all rock n’ roll. In this unique rock n’ roll revue created by
Billy McGuigan, the audience is given the opportunity to pick the songs
and music they want to hear, through music personality tests prior to
the show. The result is Rock Legends taking on the personality and taste
of the audience, making each show different from the last. The show’s
musical choices will take you on a journey from the 50s rock n’ roll of
Elvis, Buddy Holly, and Patsy Cline, to the psychedelic 60s of The Rolling
Stones, Janis Joplin, and Stevie Wonder. You’ll hit the groove of the 70s

John, and even dabble in the music of the 80s with the likes of Tom Petty

Arsenic and Old Lace

                                  By Joseph Kesselring
                                  Directed by Curtis Knecht
Mortimer Brewster has a happy life, a steady job, and
has recently become engaged to the local minister’s
daughter. Now he must introduce his bride-to-be to
his odd family. His world is turned upside down with
the realization that his two spinster aunts have been
poisoning lonely old men with arsenic-spiked elderberry
wine. One brother believes himself to be Theodore
Roosevelt and is building locks for the Panama Canal in
the cellar, while his other homicidal brother has recently
had (rather unsuccessful) plastic surgery and now
resembles something from a horror movie. Mortimer
must fight to protect his aunts, fiancée, and himself in
                                  this uproarious, farcical black comedy.
