FOREWORD
This publication is provided by the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada’s South and
Central Vancouver Island Chapter. This guide provides Chapter members and
Vancouver Island residents with a list of recreation opportunities that are adapted
and/or accessible for those living with MS and/or disability. All opportunities are
located on or for those living on Vancouver Island. The purpose of this publication
is to increase access to active living and exercise opportunities in the community for
persons with MS.

Physical exercise is an important part of every healthy lifestyle, including the
lifestyles of people living with MS. Physical exercise provides everyone with the
benefits of reducing blood pressure, assisting weight control, achieving a healthy
lifestyle, and reducing stress. For those with MS, physical exercise that is adapted
to your needs and abilities can help:
     • Improve strength, posture, mobility, and weight control
     • Lessen fatigue: This point may seem counter-intuitive, but is possible to
achieve with a physical activity that is suited to your comfort level and
         ability
     • Improve mood, self-confidence, and general well-being
     • Improve sleep, appetite, and cognitive functioning
     • Create opportunities for new social outlets
     • Decrease chances of secondary illness
     • Improve quality of life
     • Improve or maintaining the level of independence of the person with MS.
Exercise is especially beneficial as it provides the benefit of support from
your peers and a reason to get out of the house.

This publication comprises a wide variety of activities for all ages, skill levels, and
abilities. While not every physical activity in this guide will be suitable for you, we
hope you come across opportunities that will allow you to achieve a healthier, more
independent lifestyle.

A-2 BC Therapeutic Riding Association – Victoria, Cowichan, Comox, and
    Errington
Therapeutic riding for the disabled has been recognized for decades as physically,
psychologically, and socially beneficial. Horseback riding can strengthen muscles,
improve balance and coordination, increase circulation, and decrease spasticity.

Horseback riding increases concentration and improves learning skills. Riders are
challenged but also rewarded with a sense of achievement and a general feeling
of well-being, self-esteem and self-confidence. A rider with disabilities may also develop
a strong bond of respect, trust and kinship with the horse, volunteers and fellow riders.

The BC Therapeutic Riding Association is a registered charitable organization that aims
to provide horseback riding as therapy for people with disabilities. The association is

      Program Description
Yoga for MS These classes are specifically geared to those with
Multiple Sclerosis but who require the use of wheelchairs
                          or other such movement/support devices.
Yin Yoga Yin Yoga targets the connective tissues of the body that
the more active styles of Yoga practice do not. It achieves
stimulation and release of the tendons, ligaments, bones,
and joints through long holds and a deeper awareness.
Gentle Hatha Hatha Yoga is over 5000 years old. It is an ancient eastern
discipline that develops strength, endurance, flexibility
and balance. It strengthens the nervous system, and
promotes realignment of the body. It reduces stress
within both the body and the mind. Hatha Yoga is done
                          with a meditative pacing.
Pranayama The breath is an important link between our body, mind,
and spirit. Conscious control of the breath allows us
control of the mind, and as a result, of the body.
Pranayama (also known as Yoga Breathwork) greatly
improves both cardiovascular fitness and concentration.

Vinyasa Yoga Vinyasa Yoga takes Hatha poses and links them in a
gently flowing sequence interspersed with static poses.
Poses are linked to breath movement, which helps
build strength, endurance, flexibility and balance,
                          whilst improving cardiovascular ability.
