    On court today…

• In the first match of the tournament on Centre Court, world No. 1 Novak Djokovic begins his title defence against
British wild card Jack Draper, who is making his Grand Slam debut today. Djokovic has never lost a Grand Slam
match to a player ranked as low as world No. 253 Draper – but he will be cautious of the 19-year-old, who broke
through to the quarterfinals at Queen’s with victories over Jannik Sinner and Alexander Bublik earlier this month.
Should Draper record the most sensational upset against Djokovic today, it would be just the 3rd time in history
that the defending men’s singles champion has lost in the 1st round here.

• The 3rd match on Centre Court today sees the Wimbledon return of Andy Murray, who will play his first match
here in 4 years when he takes on No. 24 seed Nikoloz Basilashvili. Murray has never lost in the 1st round at
Wimbledon, but he will have to play well if he is to maintain that record today – Basilashvili has won 2 titles this
season and reached his first grass court semifinal at Halle earlier this month. The Georgian is facing a British
opponent at Wimbledon for his 3rd consecutive match, having defeated James Ward before falling to Daniel
Evans in his 2 matches here in 2019.

• On No. 1 Court, Stefanos Tsitsipas will bid to bounce back from his defeat to Djokovic in the Roland Garros final
a fortnight ago – but he has been handed a difficult 1st round draw here, with Frances Tiafoe his opponent today.
The American enters Wimbledon in good form, having reached the quarterfinals at Queen’s and won the title on
grass at the Nottingham Challenger in the last 3 weeks. Tsitsipas has won more matches than any other player
on Tour this year and will need to be at his best to record his 40th victory of the 2021 season today.

• Another title-contended in action today is No. 5 seed Andrey Rublev, who plays Federico Delbonis in the 2nd
match on No. 2 Court. Rublev is 2nd to Tsitsipas on the list for most Tour-level match-wins so far this year – but
for all his success on the Tour over the last 2 years, he is still yet to progress beyond the quarterfinals at a Grand
Slam. He will expect a comfortable victory against Delbonis today – the Argentinian enjoyed a strong clay court
season but has never won a match on grass at any level.

NO. 1 NOVAK DJOKOVIC (SRB) v (WC) JACK DRAPER (GBR)
    Head-to-head: first meeting

Djokovic has lost a Tour-level match to a player ranked as low as No. 253 Draper once before – when he retired
due to illness while trailing No. 319 Filip Krajinovic in the quarterfinals at 2010 Belgrade. The lowest-ranked player
to have defeated Djokovic at a Grand Slam is No. 117 Denis Istomin in the 2nd round at the 2017 Australian Open
and the lowest-ranked player to have defeated Djokovic at Wimbledon is No. 75 Marat Safin in the 2nd round in
    2008.

Djokovic has won 10 of the 11 matches he has played against wild cards at the Grand Slams, with his only defeat
coming against Istomin at the 2017 Australian Open. He has a 34-6 win-loss record against wild cards at Tour-
    level overall.

Djokovic has won 22 of the last 23 matches he has played against lefthanded players at the Grand Slams. Since
falling to Rafael Nadal in the final at 2014 Roland Garros, his only defeat to a lefthanded player at the Grand
Slams came against Nadal in the final at Roland Garros last year. He has a 35-12 win-loss record against
lefthanded players at the Grand Slams and a 123-38 win-loss record against lefthanded players at Tour-level
    overall.

Draper is bidding to become the 4th British player to defeat Djokovic – after Andy Murray, who has recorded 11
victories against Djokovic, and Kyle Edmund and Daniel Evans, who have each recorded one victory against
Djokovic. Djokovic has a 37-13 win-loss record against British players at Tour-level overall.

Draper is also bidding to become the 2nd British player to defeat Djokovic at a Grand Slam – after Murray, who
defeated Djokovic in the finals at both the 2012 US Open and 2013 Wimbledon. Djokovic has a 2-1 win-loss
record against British players at Wimbledon and a 13-2 win-loss record against British players at the Grand Slams
    overall.

Djokovic has a 23-1 win-loss record against players at their home Grand Slams. In addition to his 2-1 win-loss
record against British players here, he has won all 10 matches he has played against American players at the US
Open, all 9 matches he has played against French players at Roland Garros and both matches he has played
against Australian players at the Australian Open.

                     DJOKOVIC v DRAPER

• Two-time defending champion DJOKOVIC is bidding to maintain his record of always reaching the 2nd round
here. This is his 16th consecutive Wimbledon appearance and his 65th Grand Slam overall.

• Djokovic has lost in the 1st round at a Grand Slam on just 2 occasions – at the Australian Open in 2005
    (l. Marat Safin) and 2006 (l. Paul Goldstein).

• Djokovic is bidding to avoid becoming only the 3rd defending champion to lose in the 1st round at Wimbledon
    – and the first since Lleyton Hewitt fell to Ivo Karlovic in 2003. The only other defending champion to lose in the
1st round here was Manuel Santana, who lost to Charlie Pasarell in 1967.

• At 2019 Wimbledon, Djokovic won his 5th title here, defeating Roger Federer 76(5) 16 76(4) 46 13-12(3) in the
final. It was the first men's singles match to be decided with a final set tiebreak and, at 4 hours 55 minutes, it was
the longest Wimbledon men's singles final on record. He saved 2 championship points during the final set, making
him the first man to win the Wimbledon title from championship point down since Bob Falkenburg in 1948. He was
                                                                                      2021 Wimbledon day 1 men’s match notes
also the first man to win the Wimbledon title having saved a match point at any stage of the tournament since
Neale Fraser in 1960, who saved 5 match points in the quarterfinals.

• Djokovic is bidding to win his 6th Wimbledon title and claim sole ownership of 4th place on the all-time list for
the most Wimbledon men’s singles titles won, ahead of Bjorn Borg and Laurie Doherty. Federer (8 Wimbledon
titles), William Renshaw and Pete Sampras (both 7) are the only men to have won more Wimbledon singles titles
    than Djokovic.

• Djokovic is also bidding to win his 3rd consecutive Wimbledon title and become the 4th man in the Open Era
to record a streak of 3 consecutive Wimbledon titles – after Federer, Bjorn Borg and Sampras. It would be the 3rd
time in his career that he has recorded a streak of 3 consecutive titles at a Grand Slam event – he has won 3
consecutive Australian Open titles on 2 occasions, in 2013-15 and 2019-21.

• Djokovic is bidding to win his 20th Grand Slam title and equal Federer and Rafael Nadal’s record for most Grand
    Slam men’s singles titles.

• Djokovic is bidding to become the 5th man in history to win the first 3 Grand Slam tournaments of the season
    – after Jack Crawford (1933), Don Budge (1938), Lew Hoad (1956) and Rod Laver (1962 and 1969). Of the 4
men who have previously won the opening 3 Grand Slam tournaments of the season, 2 (Budge and Laver) have
gone on to win the Grand Slam, with Laver doing so in both 1962 and 1969.

• Djokovic is also bidding to become the 12th man in history to win back-to-back Roland Garros and
Wimbledon titles – and the first since Nadal achieved the feat for the 2nd time in 2010.

• Djokovic won his 9th Australian Open title in February this year, defeating Daniil Medvedev in the final. He
became the 2nd player to win 9 singles titles at a Grand Slam tournament after Nadal (13 Roland Garros titles)
and Margaret Court (9 Australian Championships/Open titles).

• Djokovic also won his 2nd Roland Garros title in June this year, becoming the 3rd man in history (after Laver
and Roy Emerson) to win all 4 Grand Slam tournaments twice. He recovered from 0-2 down to defeat Stefanos
Tsitsipas in 5 sets in the final. Having also recovered from 0-2 down to defeat Lorenzo Musetti in the round of 16,
it was the first time that a Grand Slam champion had recovered from 0-2 down twice en route to winning the title
since Ted Schroeder at 1949 Wimbledon. He defeated Nadal in the semifinals – it was Djokovic’s 2nd victory
against Nadal at Roland Garros and just Nadal’s 3rd defeat at Roland Garros.

• Djokovic is bidding to record his 311th Grand Slam match-win. By defeating Milos Raonic in the round of 16 at
the Australian Open this year, he became the 2nd player to record 300 men’s singles match-wins at the Grand
    Slams, after Federer.

• Also in 2021, Djokovic won the title at Belgrade II the week before Roland Garros, defeating Alex Molcan in the
final. He became the first man to win a Grand Slam title having won a Tour-level event the week before since
Patrick Rafter won back-to-back titles at Long Island and the US Open in 1998. He also reached the final at Rome-
1000 (l. Nadal), the semifinals at Belgrade I (l. Aslan Karatsev) and the 3rd round at Monte Carlo-1000 (l.
    Daniel Evans).

• Djokovic did not contest the singles at a grass court event prior to coming here. He is one of just 7 men in
the Open Era to have won the title here without playing a warm-up event on grass, achieving the feat in 2011,
2014-15 and 2019. He did compete in doubles at Mallorca, where he and Carlos Gomez-Herrera reached the
final before giving a walkover to Simone Boelli/Maximo Gonzalez due to Gomez-Herrera’s right ankle injury.

• Djokovic has a 9-1 win-loss record in 5-set matches at Wimbledon, with his only defeat in a 5-set match coming
against Mario Ancic in the round of 16 in 2006. He has a 35-10 win-loss record in 5-set matches overall.

• By defeating Musetti and Tsitsipas in 5 sets at Roland Garros this year, Djokovic claimed sole ownership of the
all-time record for most 5-set matches won at the Grand Slams, ahead of Federer.

Most 5-set matches won at the Grand Slams (all-time)
                                            Player 5-set match win-loss
                                      Novak Djokovic 32-9
                                       Roger Federer 30-17
                                        Pete Sampras 29-9
                                          Marin Cilic 27-12
                                        Lleyton Hewitt 26-19

                                                                                   2021 Wimbledon day 1 men’s match notes
• Of Djokovic’s 84 Tour-level singles titles, 6 have come on grass – in addition to his 5 Wimbledon titles, he also
won the title on grass at 2017 Eastbourne (d. Gael Monfils). He has won 61 titles on hard courts and 17 titles on
    clay.

• Djokovic has held the world No. 1 ranking for a total of 327 weeks (including this week) and holds the record for
most weeks ranked No. 1, having surpassed Federer’s mark of 310 weeks as world No. 1 on 8 March 2021.
Djokovic is guaranteed to remain at No. 1 unless Medvedev wins the title or Medvedev reaches final and Djokovic
    loses prior to the final.

• Djokovic has played Davis Cup for Serbia since 2004, has a 37-11 win-loss record in the competition and led
Serbia to their only title in the competition to date in 2010. He won all 3 singles matches he contested as Serbia
reached the quarterfinals last year (l. Russia). Serbia will compete alongside Germany and Austria in Group F the
    2021 Davis Cup Finals.

• Djokovic is coached by Marian Vajda and 2001 Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic.

• Wild card DRAPER is making his Grand Slam singles debut today.

• At 2019 Wimbledon, as a wild card at qualifying, Draper fell to Yasutaka Uchiyama in the 1st round of qualifying.
He also fell in the 1st round on his only other appearance in qualifying at Wimbledon, in 2018 (l. Mohamed Safwat).

• Draper made his Tour-level debut as a wild card at Miami-1000 this year, where he retired due to lower back
pain while trailing Mikhail Kukushkin in the 1st round.

• Prior to coming here, Draper recorded his first Tour-level match-wins by reaching the quarterfinals as a wild
card at Queen’s. He defeated Jannik Sinner and Alexander Bublik before falling to Cameron Norrie.

• Draper has played mainly on the ITF World Tennis Tour this year. His best result is reaching the final at M25
Prague (CZE) (l. Manuel Guinard). He also reached the quarterfinals at M15 Sharm El Sheikh (EGY) (l. Hsu Yu
Hsiou) and M25 Jablonec nad Nisou (CZE) (l. Vitaliy Sachko).

• Draper is facing a Top 10 player for the first time. The highest-ranked player he has previously faced, at any
level, is No. 23 Sinner in the 1st round at Queen’s this year.

• Draper is one of 18 lefthanders to begin the men’s main draw here this year. Rafael Nadal is the last lefthanded
player to win the men’s title here in 2010.

• At 19 years 201 days, Draper is the 3rd-youngest player to contest the men’s singles here this year and one
of 5 teenagers in the men’s main draw. Carlos Alcaraz (18 years 67 days) and Lorenzo Musetti (19 years 130
days) are the only 2 men competing here who are younger than Draper.

• Draper rose to a career-high ranking of No. 250 after reaching the quarterfinals at Queen’s earlier this month.
He plays here 3 places lower at No. 253.

• Draper finished runner-up in the boys’ singles at 2018 Wimbledon, falling to No. 1 seed Tseng Chun-Hsin 61
67(2) 64 in the final. He had defeated Nicolas Mejia 76(5) 67(6) 19-17 in a semifinal match lasting 4 hours 23
minutes. He reached a career-high junior ranking of No. 7 in December 2018.

• Draper is coached by Ryan Jones. He is a member of the LTA’s Pro Scholarship Programme, an initiative for the
    most-talented British players aged 16-24.

                                                                                    2021 Wimbledon day 1 men’s match notes
