B.1.617.2 (Delta) Variant

    The highly transmissible B.1.617.2 (Delta) variant continues to spread
    across the United States at a rapid pace.

    Early data suggest that B.1.617.2 now makes up more than 94% of COVID-
    19 cases. In some parts of the country, this percentage is even higher,
    especially in areas with low vaccination rates.

    This rapid rise is concerning and threatens the progress the United States
    has made toward ending the pandemic.

Oxford-AstraZeneca’s Vaccine
     Status: In the Pipeline

       ▸   Oxford University and AstraZeneca (AZD1222)
           ▹   A Viral Vector Vaccine, similar to the Johnson & Johnson vaccine
           ▹   The AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine is now called Vaxzevira
           ▹   A specially engineered virus delivers genetic instructions to human cells to make the
               spike protein jutting out from the new coronavirus’s surface.
           ▹   AstraZeneca pledged the vaccine would cost just a few dollars per dose and be sold
               without making a profit. ($4.00 per dose)
           ▹   Compare to Pfizer’s vaccine costs per dose: $18.40 - $19.50.

Oxford-AstraZeneca’s Vaccine
     Status: In the Pipeline

       ▸   Oxford University and AstraZeneca (AZD1222)
           ▹   Data from clinical trial in the United States, Chile and Peru
                ■     Trials included 32,449 adult participants in all age groups, most of them in the
                      United States
                ■     The volunteers received two standard doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine,
                      or a placebo, at a four-week interval
                ■     Scientists said the data shows that the vaccine is 79% effective against
                      symptomatic COVID-19, and 100% effective against severe illness
                ■     STAT - June 14, 2021: Novavax COVID-19 vaccine highly effective in late-stage
                      trial, long awaited results show

Oxford-AstraZeneca’s Vaccine
     Status: In the Pipeline

       ▸   Oxford University and AstraZeneca (AZD1222)
           ▹   In March 2021, several European countries paused the use of the AstraZeneca COVID-
               19 vaccine after several reports of blood clots.
           ▹   The clots that are linked to the vaccine have very specific characteristics:
                ■     They occur in unusual areas of the body, like the abdomen or brain.
                ■     People affected also have low platelet levels.
                ■     It was found that people with these blood clots showed symptoms like a
                      condition called heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT).
                ■     Researchers are not sure what parts of the vaccine is causing an immune
