A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR - The North Jersey Ramapo Chapter
SPRING 2022

                                     A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
Our Adirondack Mountain Club commemorates the incredible milestone of being 1 00 years old in 2022, a special
occasion that will be celebrated with many exciting centennial events throughout the year, many of which are
announced in this newsletter and on the ADK website. Based out of the Adirondack Park in New York State, ADK is a
leader in providing outdoor education, promoting responsible recreation, and organizing stewardship experiences.
Since 1 922, the organization has worked to extend access to the outdoors by building trails, conserving natural areas,
and developing a stewardship community that supports the ethical and safe use of New York’s outdoor spaces. A
member, donor, and volunteer-supported organization, ADK reaches across New York and northern New Jersey
through its 27 chapters to inspire people to enjoy the outdoors ethically. Our area has enjoyed the benefits of a local
ADK chapter for 53 years, from the creation of the North Jersey Chapter in 1 969, the Ramapo Chapter a bit later, and
their merger in 2009 to form our North Jersey - Ramapo Chapter. We are run entirely by volunteers who celebrate the
extraordinary community that enjoys and protects trails through a mission of recreation, education, and conservation.
To further augment that effort, the Advisory Council was formed a year ago to bolster chapters and to help guide
ADK’s direction and future. The Council is proving to be an effective board to promote and support our 27 chapters. It
has accomplished a lot and worked hard to bring members together, creating a forum for chapters to share ideas, ask
questions, and voice concerns, and sponsoring six committees to advise and make recommendations as to ADK’s
mission and issues affecting ADK chapters. Peter Reiner, our chapter trustee to the Advisory Council, through hard
work and dedication, has helped our chapter significantly in operational and mission-oriented matters. To aid that
effort, I am happy to announce that our chapter board has approved the nomination of Mike Prestia as Alternate
Trustee, representing our chapter at the Advisory Council. You can read about Mike’s background on page 4.
We have a new chapter volunteer to introduce: Mary Gelber will be assuming responsibility for the ADK NJR Meetup
site, replacing Daphne Downes, who, after many years of remarkable service, is stepping down. Thank you, Daphne,
for your hard work as NJR’s “Social Media & Events Coordinator”. We appreciate your support and efforts as our
Meetup Administrator and a Facebook editor. A big thank you to Mary for volunteering to administer our Meetup site!
On a sad note, Pat Banker is stepping down from her role as our Newsletter Chair. We thank Pat for all she has done for
our chapter as Newsletter Chair and member of our board. We appreciate the support she has given our chapter and
her tireless efforts in producing our professional-looking newsletter. Our board seeks to recruit a Newsletter Chair. We
will help support the newsletter editor transition. If you have a passion for writing or editing or if you have a graphic

A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR - The North Jersey Ramapo Chapter
Meet Mike Prestia
I began my hiking passion in October of 201 5 as a form of exercise with the
dream/goal of through hiking the Appalachian Trail. It remains on my bucket list
although I have hiked sections in NY, NJ and Connecticut. Since then I have met
many wonderful people on the trails in the local area and the Catskills. After
club members Roy Wooters and Peggy Wissler introduced me to hiking in the
Catskills, I completed the 35 hikes for membership in the Catskill 3500 club in
one year and am currently working on the winter designation.
I have been a member of ADK-Ramapo/North Jersey chapter for six years and
during this time, I have participated in many chapter activities. Four years ago I
became a hike leader. I am also a member of the NYNJ trail conference and was
a trail maintainer (Sterling Forest) for 4 years.
In July 2000, I retired from the New York City Police Department with the rank of
Sergeant. After retiring, I went into Corporate Security Management working in
both contract and proprietary positions at Bloomberg LP, Hudson Yards, and
Worldwide Plaza. Now I work for the Eastchester School District in Westchester
County. I hold a Master’s of Science degree in Security and Protection
Management.
