Milk bottle watering can Wordsearch
This wordsearch is all about garden creatures!
You will need:
How many of these can you find in your garden?
• One plastic drink bottle with cap (works best with a round bottle)
• Two willow sticks about 20cm long (a bit longer if using a 1- or
  2-litre bottle)
• A drawing pin and nail scissors for punching and cutting the holes in
  the bottle
• String 40 to 45cm long

Method:

1. Wash the bottle and if possible remove the label.
2. To make the perches, use a drawing pin to punch 2 holes opposite
each other near the bottom of the bottle and cut small holes with
   scissors.
3. Insert a stick so that it passes through one hole, through the bottle,
   and out the other side.
4. Repeat this to make the other perch just above the first.
5. Now you’re ready to make the feeding holes. Use a drawing pin and
scissors to make a small hole about 4cm above each perch (about
¾cm wide). Keep in mind that the seeds will just fall out if the holes
   are too big.
6. To make the hanger, poke a hole in one side of the bottle neck and
   then the other.
7. Thread the string through the holes in the bottle neck and tie them
   together at the ends.
8. To do at home: remove the cap and fill the feeder with sunflower ants earthworm slug
                                                                             bee earwig snail
seeds or mixed seeds. (A small household funnel will make this

9. Screw the cap back on and hang the feeder from a tree branch or dragonfly moth woodlouse
hook outside. Keep clean and replenished!

Marshmallow crispy
squares
Ingredients
• 45 grams butter
• 300 grams mini marshmallows
• 180 grams rice krispies
• edible glitter or sprinkles (optional)

Method

1. Melt the butter in a large, heavy-based saucepan over a low
   heat.
2. Add the marshmallows and cook gently until they are
completely melted and blended, stirring constantly.
3. Take the pan off the heat and immediately add the cereal,
   mixing lightly until well coated.
4. Press the mixture into a greased 32cm x 23cm tin / 13 x 9
inch pan; you may have to put on vinyl CSI gloves and press
it down into the corners, as it will be very sticky. Flatten the
top and then scatter over the edible glitter or sprinkles, if so
   inclined.
5. Let the marshmallow crispy squares cool completely in the
tin and then cut them into 24 squares.

Ingredients
• 300 g macaroni - not the quick
  cook stuff, which really doesn’t
  work in this recipe
                                         • 500 ml milk
                                         • 1 tsp mustard (or to taste)

1 What is the longest distance flown by a bird?
• 30 g butter taste), grated
• 25 g flour • Salt and pepper to taste

Method
2 What gives a compass jellyfish its name?
1. Preheat the oven to 220C / 200C Fan / Gas Mark 7.
2. Cook the macaroni until it’s a bit less done than normal – a couple
of minutes less than you would usually do. The brand I use takes 10
minutes normally, so I give it 8 minutes for macaroni cheese.
3. While the macaroni is cooking, make the cheese sauce. Melt the butter
in a medium sized pan on a low heat. When the butter is foaming, add
the flour and stir until it’s mixed in. Then keep cooking for 2 minutes,
3 What colours are a common gulls legs?

stirring frequently. It takes guts to do this. It looks like something is
going to go wrong but it doesn’t!
4. Very gradually add the milk, stirring constantly. Make sure each bit of
milk is incorporated before adding the next bit. If you do this slowly
on a very low heat, you should end up with a perfectly smooth cheese
sauce with no lumps and no need to whisk. However, if it does go wrong
for some reason, you can always use a whisk to beat out the lumps.
4 What seagull is biger, a common gull or herring
                                                                                        gull?
5. When all the milk is incorporated, add the mustard, salt and pepper.
(N.B. I use slightly salted butter, so I don’t add any extra salt here.) Then
add half the cheese, stir to combine and turn off.
6. When the pasta is done, drain it, retaining a little bit of the cooking
   water.
7. Tip the pasta and a couple of tablespoonfuls of the cooking water into
5 How many days did the bar-tailed godwit fly for
                                                                                        to fly the longest distance?
   the cheese sauce and stir.
8. Pour the macaroni cheese into a shallow ovenproof dish and sprinkle
   over the remaining cheese.
9. Bake in the oven for 10 minutes. The top should be brown but the
bottom should still be saucy and the macaroni should be perfectly
   cooked.
