PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS JANUARY 2021

                                                      HAWAIIAN LANGUAGE MASTERS
Tuesday, January 26 at 7:30 pm

The Hawaiian language nearly went extinct following
the overthrow of the Hawaiian Monarchy. For decades
it was mostly spoken in homes by kūpuna. In the 1960s
and 70s, the Hawaiian Renaissance movement helped
save the native tongue from disappearing. This month
on Long Story Short with Leslie Wilcox, we hear from four
people who have dedicated their lives to perpetuating
  the Hawaiian language.
                                                                Larry Kimura
Educator Larry Kimura grew up in Waimea on Hawai‘i
Island listening to his grandmother and her friends
speak Hawaiian. His interest grew further after he
took a class at Kamehameha Schools, and from there,
it flourished. “I just knew this is what my passion is,
and this is what I’m gonna be working in, whatever it’s
  gonna be called,” said Kimura.

Hawaii Kai’s Sarah Keahi was the only Hawaiian
Language teacher at Kamehameha Schools when she
started working there in 1966. Her interest in ‘ōlelo Sarah Keahi
Hawai‘i was also sparked by the older generation. “My
grandmother spoke Hawaiian with my mom
sometimes and I was fascinated,” Keahi said.

Born and raised in Minnesota, Puakea Nogelmeier,
PhD moved to West O‘ahu in 1970 and was invited to
join a hālau shortly thereafter. He says he would
memorize hula chants, but realized he needed to
better understand them. “Why would I engage if I’m
not trying to learn what this is about? So then I started
                                                                Puakea Nogelmeier
to try and learn Hawaiian language,” said Nogelmeier.

Amy Kalili of Kailua, Windward O‘ahu, hosted the
first Hawaiian language segment on a local morning
news program. While that was groundbreaking,
Kalili says there’s more ground to be broken: “Having
content that covers that gamut – from news, drama,
comedy, documentaries – having all of these things
being done in the Hawaiian language, from a
Hawaiian perspective, I don’t see any reason why we
  can’t get there.”
                                                                Amy Kalili

AMERICA’S TEST KITCHEN FROM COOK’S ILLUSTRATED
Season 21
Saturdays at 4:30 pm, beginning January 2
Typically filmed in the Test Kitchen studios in Boston, this new season takes
home cooking literally, presenting all 26 episodes from cast members’ homes.
Hosts Julia Collin Davison (pictured) and Bridget Lancaster and the rest of the
series’ test cooks will be working from their very own kitchens, without the
army of prep cooks and dishwashers who usually support the team. Viewers
can count on seeing the cooks deconstruct recipes and reveal secrets.

                           A Woman’s Work: The NFL’s Cheerleader Problem
Monday, January 4 at 9:00 pm
NFL cheerleaders revolve their lives around their sport, but most earn less than
minimum wage. Three of them decide they deserve more. In high-stakes lawsuits,
these courageous women take a stand against the massive, male-dominated
                           sports league.
