The Arthritis Foundation introduces the Bone Bash to San Francisco on Saturday, October 27, 2018
A Great Cause - Masquerading for a Great Time!

San Francisco, CA – Join the Northern California Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation and Inaugural Chair, Sharon
Seto, to help find a cure for arthritis at Bone Bash 2018 – An Evening in Disguise on Saturday evening, October 27,
2018, at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco.
Joining Mrs. Seto to bring this important event to the Bay Area are Honorary Co-Chairs, The Honorable, London Breed,
Mayor of San Francisco, The Honorable Sam Liccardo, Mayor of San Jose, First Lady Jessica Garcia Kohl, California
State Assemblyman, David Chiu, and Dr. Chelsey Seippel. “I am so honored that the mayors of these two major cities
have chosen to make a difference by supporting the Arthritis Foundation!”, said Seto. “Proceeds from our inaugural
event will make an impact locally by not only helping support the over two million adults and children living with
arthritis in Northern California but also funding necessary research to fight for a cure.”
The Arthritis Foundation Bone Bash is a themed community-driven fundraiser that celebrates and honors those who
have given generously of their time, energy, and resources to promote information, advocacy, community, and scientific
discovery for arthritis – the nation’s leading cause of disability impacting more than 50 million adults and 300,000 kids in
the U.S. This year, the Arthritis Foundation will distinguish two inspiring Bay Area individuals who are visionaries who
have committed their lives to finding a cure and championing the fight against arthritis: our Champion of Yes! Award
recipient is Jeffrey Gottfurcht, and our Medical Award of Excellence recipient is Emily von Scheven, M.D.
Donning their venetian masks, guests will be treated to an elegant evening reminiscent of centuries-old masquerade
balls. The evening will include a cocktail reception, dinner, silent and live auctions, and honoree presentations. After
the main program, party-revelers are invited to Casino Mystique for games, merriment, and dancing.

2018 HONOREES

                         JEFFREY GOTTFURCHT
                         Champion of Yes Award Recipient

Jeffrey Gottfurcht is the first person in the world with rheumatoid arthritis to climb to the
summit of Mt Everest! At 27 years of age, he was diagnosed with this debilitating disease. He
had periodically experienced swollen fingers, knees, and wrists and had stiff joints in his early
20s but thought these were merely allergic reactions or due to playing football, ice hockey, or
running cross-country.

Finally, a rheumatoid arthritis specialist confirmed the diagnosis. In 2002, Jeffrey’s symptoms significantly advanced
causing him severe swelling and stiffness in his knees, toes, elbows, all his fingers, and even his jaw. An avid mountain
climber, Jeffrey decided he could not just give in. With his can-do attitude, he committed himself to training and
climbing mountains around the world to prepare for attempting Mount Everest in 2010, thereby fulfilling his number
one goal.

Unfortunately, he had to turn back at 23,000 feet due to sickness. With fierce determination and unwavering
commitment, Jeffrey returned in 2011 to Mt. Everest and against incredible odds - he finally stood on top of the world
at 29,035 feet. He speaks across the country to help inspire, motivate, and energize those who face adversity. Jeffrey
started his career in finance and became a sponsored climber - allowing him to scale mountains all over the world.

Jeffrey spends his free time with his wife and watching their three kids grow. He is a proud member of the Board of
Directors for the Arthritis Foundation of Northern California. He lives his life by saying yes, despite pain, and we are
thrilled to acknowledge the inspiration he brings to all arthritis warriors.
