Important Information

       •Application deadline: May 30, 2014 to Mrs. Denise Benton, Principal, Melita School
       •Include in your envelope the following information:
              *Checklist of which scholarships you would like to be considered for
              *Letter of application (see below for what to include in your letter of application)

Letter of Application

Your letter of application will be written in paragraph form and must include the following information:
       •Your post- secondary pursuits and future goals; where will you be attending and what
       area/program will you study.
       •Qualities you possess that make you a suitable candidate for designated awards.
       •Information regarding such things as:
                *Extra- curricular involvement
                *Volunteerism/community service
                *Academic achievements/awards
                *Work experience
                *Leadership
                *Other relevant information (example: Encounters with Canada)
       •Be sure to note the criteria for the awards you are being considered for and include any other
       pertinent information.
Students will automatically be considered for the following scholarships/awards:

Southwest Horizon School Division General Proficiency Award: Top average in Grade 12. The winners name
will be passed onto the Division office and a cheque will be mailed out in early July. A plaque is also issued to

Governor General’s Academic Medal: It goes to the student who achieves the highest average on their final
results in Grades 11 and 12. This average includes all Grade 11 and 12 courses with no differentiation
between “academic” and “vocational” types of courses; all courses taken will be included in the calculation.

Royal Bank Proficiency Cash Award: Awarded to the student with the highest average going on to study at a
Community College or post- secondary institution other than a university. Preference will be given to a
candidate entering studies in the area of business or finance.
(Note: be sure to include a covering letter as well as proof of registration to the post- secondary institution
when handing in to the local RBC for release of payment)…………………………………………………………..……..$500.00

Sunrise Credit Union: This award is to be presented to a deserving graduating student who plans to continue
his/her education at a university or college. Students must have an average of not less than 65% and have
worked hard to achieve their grades. Preference will be given to a student who has been involved in the
community (volunteering, working, participation in sports, etc) Where possible, must be a student with no
more than one other scholarship and a person who would benefit the most financially from the scholarship.
This award may be deferred for one year………………………………………………………………………………………..$1500.00
Local Scholarships-are to be submitted to Mrs. Benton and will be determined by the scholarship committee.

⃝ Melita School Staff Bursary- sum is not fixed; awarded to a student who is entering the field of education
to pursue studies as a teacher in the fall; exhibits good academic standing in conjunction with a history or
service to their school. If no applicants entering the Faculty of Education, the award may still be given; This
award may be deferred for one year………………………………………………………………………………..………………….Not fixed

⃝ Melita Senior Student Council Bursary- Given by Melita Student Council to the student who shows
excellent school leadership, school spirit, and citizenship and is entering a post- secondary education in
September……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..$300.00

⃝ Melita Lions Club- Given annually to any graduating student who plans to continue his/her education at a
university or college. Consideration is given to need, personal initiative, good general citizenship, and
community service such as volunteer work, 4-H etc. Presentation of 1st semester marks are required before
the monies are disbursed. A copy is to be sent to the Melita Lions Club, Box 610, Melita, MB R0M 1L0.
Registration may be deferred for a maximum of one year……………………………………………………………………$500.00

⃝ Broomhill Field Trial Club Bursary- Under the direction of Colvin & Mazie Davis the bursary is presented to a
student pursuing post-secondary studies at a university or community college in: agriculture, medicine,
veterinarian sciences, or natural resources. This is the Davis’s way of thanking the landowners for allowing
them to run their dogs on their land. Payments will be forthcoming on receipt of proof of registration. If there
is no candidate that meets the above criteria, the award will not be issued for that year……………………$200.00

⃝ Tobe Stallings Memorial Scholarship - will be awarded to a deserving student who achieves high marks
through hard work and dedication but not necessarily the student with the highest mark. School and
community service is required (eg. 4-H). Must be going onto a university in the fall; it may be a Canadian or
American institution. This award may not be postponed for a year. It comes from an American benefactor.

⃝ Inetlink/NetSet Scholarship- given to one student in either Gr 11 or 12. If a school does not have a person
who fits the criteria in any given year, the money will be divided up amongst the number of schools applying.
Student must have successfully completed a web based/IITV Gr 11 or 12 course. Displayed independent
learning skills; have demonstrated excellent electronic communication skills with teacher and colleagues taking
the same course, preferably furthering their career in the computer technology field………………(min.) $285.00
Each of the following scholarships must be directly applied for. Individual forms can be found in the library,
please check with Mrs. Green. Mail all appropriate documentation to the address provided. Deadline May 30,
2014 unless otherwise stated

Melita Nurses Bursary- to be awarded to a Melita/Pierson student entering into the field of nursing. This is
open to applicants heading off to a L.P.N., R.N., R.P.N., or B.N. program of studies only. A marks transcript is
necessary for the selection of the award, however, highest marks aren’t necessarily the only criteria use. The
deadline for application is the 1st of June. A final copy of your transcript needs to be sent to Mrs. Jocelyn
Wheelans. Application sent to: Jocelyn Wheelans, Box 44, Tilston, MB R0M 2B0……………………..……….$150.00

Assiniboine Region Nurses Scholarship Fund- awarded annually to an Assiniboine rural area student accepted
into a nursing program at a Manitoba Institution (B.N., R.N., L.P.N. or Psychiatric Nurse P.N.) Must be a
Manitoba resident and living in or originating from the Assiniboine Regional Health Authority. An essay is
required. See application form for details……………………………………………………………………………………………$500.00

Prairie Vision Arts Council – Available to students in Melita, Pierson and Waskada school. Apply if you are
registering at a post-secondary institution in the field of Visual, Performing, or Literary Arts. This scholarship
will be presented in 2-$200.00 instalments-after successful completion of the first terms in the first and
second years. Apply in writing stating the course and institution you are attending, supply a resume. Mail
applications to Prairie Vision Arts Council, Box 164, Melita, MB R0M 1L0……………………………………….…$400.00

Reston & Area Foundation Scholarship/Bursary Fund- open to a student who reside in the Municipalities of
Pipestone, Albert or a resident of the Fort La Bosse School Division. Scholastic achievement, service to school
and community and financial need are all factors considered. Attendance may be deferred for one year.
Proof of registration and attendance must be provided prior to payment. Submit application to:
Scholarship/Bursary Fund, Reston & Area Foundation, Box 515, Reston, MB R0M 1X0……………..$250.-$500.00

John A. Nevin Cattle Growers Education Fund Award- The shorthorn breeders of Manitoba are offering 7
scholarships to any student who resides in Manitoba for the furthering of his/her education with special
consideration to be given to anyone who may be interested in or engaged in the research/development of
Shorthorn cattle through university or other school of learning. Preference will also be given to Grade 12
students who have shown a 4-H shorthorn calf or whose parents raise shorthorn cattle. Include your name,
mailing address, telephone/fax nu8mber, school presently attending, a transcript of marks and plans after
graduation. Deadline for application is June 1st. Mail application to the secretary: Judy Gibson, Box 1534

Sacred Heart Catholic Women’s League Citizenship Award- School and Community involvement Award: is a
cash award plus a keeper plaque. The applications are judged by a committee from the Sacred Heart CWL.
The marking is judged on school activities and community activities. Forward applications to Sacred Heart

Larry Danyluk Industrial Arts Bursary- A graduating student or previous graduate of Melita School going into
an Industrial Arts program with an interest in Meat Cutting/Food Prep and attending a western school.
Marks are not a criteria, but serious about the industry and an honest work ethic will be. Working with or had
experience with Larry at Souris Valley Processor or a licensed meat cutting facility will be an asset.
Please forward a resume, transcript and any other applicable information to the school. Applications will be

Ladies Auxiliary to R.C.L. Branchy #127 (Local Legion) Citizenship Award – award open to any student
pursuing post-secondary education (university, community college, or other post-secondary school of
learning) This award is based on involvement in school affairs, community activity and citizenship. Send
application to Box 147, Melita, MB R0M 1L0

Melita Legion Branch #127 Bursary- to all grads attending college or university in the fall must send a copy of
your transcript to date and your plans for the fall. The bursary will be paid out after you have completed your

Other Scholarship Opportunities

Westman Communications Group Technology Scholarship- you must have applied to and ben accepted at a
Manitoba post-secondary institution to pursue studies to pursue studies in a technology focused field;
demonstrated proven academic excellence in Grade 12 and participated in school and community activities.
You must submit your application to the grad scholarship advisor no later than May 15 th. You must be going
onto a “Technology Based” field. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………….$500.00

Manitoba Beef Producers Bursary- a bursary for MBP members or their children attending a university,
college or other post-secondary institution or pursuing trades training. Preference will be given to those
student pursuing a field of study related to agriculture or to those acquiring a skilled trade that would be
beneficial to the rural economy. To be eligible you must be 17 years of age and an active Manitoba Beef
Producer or child of. Application form available from library. June 1 st deadline………………………..……..…$500.00

Monsanto Fund Opportunity Scholarship- must be pursuing studies in Agriculture, come from a family farm
operation and have demonstrated academic excellence, leadership capabilities and active involvement in your
local community. Deadline May 25th.

The following awards can only be applied for after completion of your first year of post-secondary training:

Sandyland Award – given to one student who has already graduated from Grade 12 and has completed your
first year of University and is enrolled for the second year of Agriculture. Write a short letter of application
indicating you have successfully completed University 1………………………………………….…………..Minimum $100.00

Royal Canadian Legion Provincial Council Ladies Auxiliary - it is a University scholarship for a person entering
the Faculties of Physio/Occupational therapy or Bachelor of Nursing at a Canadian University on a full time
basis. To be eligible for the Physio/Occupational Therapy scholarship, the applicant must have completed
his/her first year of study in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (five full courses, three courses of which must be
Bio, Psych and Sociology. To be eligible for the Bachelor of Nursing Scholarship, the applicant must have
completed a min. of Br. 12 with the University prerequisities as part of their course of study. Due date is Sept.
30th of each year. The value of each year’s scholarship depends upon the funds available from year to year.

Meghan White Memorial Scholarship- an annual scholarship in memory of Meghan who graduated from
Melita School. It is for a student now entering their second year of continuing education at university in a
degree program. The scholarship will be awarded to an applicant who has excelled academically during their
first year of university, is entering their second year of university, has demonstrated involvement in
sports/music/arts, and who has been active in the community. A completed signed application form and a
photocopy of the official transcript of first year grades. Presentation of this award takes place at Melita
Graduation in June. Deadline is June 1st

Melita and Area Health Committee Inc. – This bursary is offered each year for 4 years to a student pursuing
the field of Human Health Care. Must be a resident of the Village of Waskada, Town of Melita or the RMs of
Albert, Arthur, Edward, Pipestone or Brenda. Available upon receipt of second year registration. Apply to the
Health Committee at Box 610, Melita, MB R0M 1L0. Application available in the library……………..………$500.00

Melita Health Auxiliary Award – this scholarship is awarded to a deserving student who is entering the 2 nd
year of their studies at a post- secondary institution with the intent of pursuing a career in the field of human
medicine. Please mail a resume and a transcript of your first year marks to Melita Healthy Auxiliary, Box 881,
Melita, MB R0M 1L0. Application available in library, deadline June 1, 2014……………………………………….$600.00
