                                 Code of Student Conduct
                                        2019-2020
All students at Visible Men Academy (VMA) are expected to adhere to all school rules, procedures,
and policies. The VMA Code of Student Conduct applies to every VMA student at all times during
school hours, both on school grounds as well as on school-sponsored transportation (e.g. bus), and
at any off-site school-related program or event (e.g. field trips).

                                         Code of Student Conduct
All VMA students will adhere to and abide by the following school standards and expectations:
    1) Learn, understand, practice, and display the VMA SHINE Core Values.
S-Selflessness: Show compassion and respect for others.
H-Honesty: Be truthful, sincere and trustworthy.
I-Integrity: Be who you say you are.
                  N-Niceness: Be kind to others.
                  E-Excellence: Strive for highest performance.
    2) Treat all members of the VMA school community with kindness, civility, and respect at all
times. (School community is defined as Faculty, Staff, Students, Families, and Guests.
Guests include visitors, volunteers, and program leaders.)
    3) Follow specific classroom, building, and program rules, as outlined by Faculty & Staff
members, as well as Guest program leaders and speakers.
    4) Listen and respond to instructions from all VMA Faculty & Staff members, as well as Guest
       program leaders and speakers.
    5) Treat all school facilities, equipment, and materials with care.
    6) Refrain from using or possessing the property of others without permission.
    7) Refrain from using inappropriate language or gestures.
    8) Refrain from any and all physical contact with all members of the VMA school community.

This Code of Student Conduct is in place to ensure a safe, healthy, and productive learning
environment for all members of the VMA school community.
Violations of the Code of Student Conduct will result in disciplinary consequences. Repeated and/or
egregious violations may result in withdrawal from school.

The mission of Visible Men Academy (VMA) is to provide boys with outstanding academic,
character, and social education in a nurturing school environment.

School Hours, Arrival and Dismissal
Arriving at school on time allows students to experience positive interactions with others and
participate more fully in learning activities.

• The VMA School Day is from 7:45 am - 4:00 pm.
• Students may arrive as early as 7:15 am.
• Students should arrive with their backpack and student binder everyday.
• Students wishing to have breakfast need to arrive no later than 7:45 am.
• Late arrivals will be marked as tardy. You are late at 8:01am.
• Three tardies are equivalent to one absence. Tardies and early pick-up affect your students grades.
• You must call the office if your son is going to be absent that day.
• A written Dr.’s note MUST be submitted in the event of an illness or appointment.
• Students being picked up (car riders) will be released starting at 4:00 pm. Any change in regular
pick-up (bus or car rider) must be done through student planner or contacting the school
       BEFORE 3:00pm.
• You must notify the office or put a note in his agenda if you need to pick up your son before the
4:00 pm dismissal. Students will not be released before 4:00 pm without a written note,
documented medical appointment, or prior phone call.
• VMA is a drug and tobacco free campus. There is NO SMOKING once you enter our campus.
• When picking up and dropping off students, music should be lowered, proper attire should be
worn, and there should be no cell phone use when entering our school or receiving
       your son in carline.

Uniforms
Wearing a school uniform is important because it reflects the school's discipline standards. It is also
known that putting on school uniforms improves student performance by eliminating unnecessary
distractions over attire.

• Each student at Visible Men Academy is required to wear his uniform Monday - Friday.
• The VMA Uniform consists of the following:
      - VMA issued polo style shirt with VMA logo
      - White, Gray, or Light Yellow polo style (collared) shirt
      - Khaki shorts or pants (No Cargo shorts)
                                                   2
- VMA T-shirt
      - Belts (Brown or Black only) must be worn everyday at all times
      - Socks must be worn and should be solid white or black. No other colors are accepted
      - Uniforms must be clean, fit correctly, free of holes, tears, and discolorations
• Casual T-shirts, Jeans, Black, Navy, Gray or any other colored pants, shorts or shirts are NOT
ACCEPTABLE. Uniforms should be clean, and not ripped or torn.
• Uniforms can be ordered from the front office in the mornings, and picked up in the afternoons.
Uniform shirts are $10. Transactions will not be made during student arrivals or dismissals.

School Lunch
A good lunch benefits a student by giving him the energy to remain alert during class time. This is
true whether the student is in elementary school, high school or college. A healthy lunch helps
maintain peak academic performance.

• VMA has school lunch provided by Harllee Middle School.
• The menu for the month is posted at the front office and available from your teacher.
• Sugary snacks, candy, gum, sodas, or sports drinks are not permitted at VMA.
• Water bottles that contain water only are permitted at VMA for the use during Solar and P.E.
• If your student has particular tastes, not aligned with the lunch menu, feel free to pack a nutritious
       lunch for your student.
• Food substitutions are not possible at VMA as our lunches are predetermined by the District.
• Make sure we know of any food allergies.

School Bus
School busses are an extension of school, and students are expected to adhere to the same standards
of behavior on a school bus as in the classroom.

• Please allow at least 15 minutes before and after the bus stop times indicated.
• If you miss your student's bus stop, they will be returned to VMA at the end of the Bus Route. VMA
Staff will not be on campus at this time. Repeated missed stops will result in your student not
being able to take the bus.
• Students should be courteous, friendly and obedient to the driver at all times, recognizing his/her
authority on the bus. If you have any questions or problems regarding transportation, direct
them to the school, not the driver. Routes and stops are made prior to the start of the school
       year.
• Fighting, profanity and vandalism will not be tolerated. There is zero tolerance for this behavior.
Disciplinary conversations will be directed through the school. Repeated infractions will
result in your student not being able to take the bus.
• All children must cross at least twelve (12) feet in front of the bus, so that the driver can watch
them, and wait for the driver’s signal before crossing the road.
• The bus driver is authorized to assign seats.
• Students must remain seated while on the bus, and must wear their seat belts at all times. No food
or drink is allowed on the bus, except water.
• A&S Transportation is not responsible for the loss or damage of any personal electronic
equipment brought on the bus by a student.
• Students in Second grade and younger require a guardian for pick up at the stop. If the guardian is
not at the stop, the student will be returned to the school.
• Parents / Guardians must be clearly visible to the driver when picking up students at a bus stop.

                                                   3
• The bus driver, and VMA must have the most current, and working phone number for a parent in
      the event of an emergency.

Electronic Devices, Toys, and other items
Cell phones, Smartphones, MP3 Players, Tablets, Gaming Systems, and non-school Laptops are not
permitted at Visible Men Academy. This also applies to any toys, cards, jewelry, fidget spinners, or
any other items that may be a distraction from the learning atmosphere. VMA is not responsible for
any lost or stolen items that are not permitted on campus. Firearms including water, air, BB, cap etc.
are NOT permitted at VMA. Please refrain from purchasing these items for your son or having
them in your household, in the event he brings them to school without your knowledge. This is
considered a very serious offense with immediate and dire consequences that could involve
authorities.

Teacher, Staff, and Administration Communication
Parent Communication should be handled through the parent communication log located in your
son’s agenda. Teachers are also available via email, or scheduled Parent / Teacher conferences.
Phone calls during the school day are not possible, as our teachers do not have phones in their
classrooms, and are busy teaching students. Please do not arrive on campus requesting an
immediate conference with our teachers, staff, or administration. We are happy to schedule a
conference that is convenient for all parties involved. Please contact the front office at VMA if you
have an emergency.

School Communication
Communication from VMA will be handled through flyers, monthly newsletters, phone calls, postal
mailings, email, and Facebook. It is very important we have correct and working phone numbers
for you along with at least (2) emergency contact phone numbers. We want to make sure all of our
families are receiving the latest information about VMA, and are able to be reached in the event of
an emergency. Please check you son’s backpack daily for announcements from the school or his
teacher.

Student Illnesses, Injuries, and Prescribed Medication
When a student is ill or injured (beyond a adhesive bandage and ice pack), they need to report this
to their teacher immediately. An appropriate staff member will evaluate the student and determine if
the students needs to be picked up.

Students may not remain at school with the following:
   § Temperature above 100 degrees F § Head Lice
   § Vomiting § Open Wounds
   § Rash § Ringworm
   § Diarrhea § Anything contagious

When possible, students should take prescribed medications at home. If it is necessary that
medication be given during school hours, a parent must deliver the physician authorization and
medication directly to proper school personnel. DO NOT send your student to school with
prescription, or over-the-counter medication, cough drops, sprays, or ointments.
