3President’s Piece
April can be a very active month for members, with a variety of opportunities for you
to drive and show your cars. With two Classic car shows, two social runs and a social/
competition weekend as well. Unlike my many MG owning friends back in the UK, who
are still in ‘Lockdown’, we can drive our MG’s and gather together in large numbers
whenever we want. There are expected to be over 500 Classics at both the Curtin and
Shannons shows.
Our annual Show n Shine and Concours was a very successful and enjoyable day in the
sunshine. It was good to see MG’s with their owners, from the MGOC and TCOC, joining
us at the Rverside Gardens. Unfortunately, Concours entry numbers were down on
previous years. Organising and putting on a Concours event involves much work behind
the scenes before and on the day itself. With Concours entry numbers dwindling, the
Committee will, over the coming months be considering our options regarding this
annual event.
The Southern Chapter under the very capable leadership of Ted & Robyn Mullins,
continues to grow in numbers, both of members and social events. It is pleasing to see
that our ‘Southern’ members are being well provided for, with organised opportunities
to get out on the road in company with other MG enthusiasts and enjoy the fellowship
that is an essential part of any MGCC activity.
I have made good progress this month with my TD. The engine was turned over on the
starter and eventually the oil pressure gauge showed signs of life [ this was done with
the plugs out and the ignition off, one advantage of a ‘Pull to start’ system]. By the time
you are reading this I intend to have the engine running and be making progress with
fitting the re-painted front wings and running boards, wiring up the headlights etc.
So far I have spent 240 Hours working on the restoration. One aspect that differs from
similar work I did on the car in 1973, is that of now having a camera phone, that
enabled me to take many pictures of the various aspects before dismantling. These are
stored on my phone and have been most useful, during the re-assembly.
Our February and March General Meetings held at the Stirling Arms, were different but
successful, thanks to Sarah Fry for organising them. The member numbers at the March
GM were 43 and in view of this and the likelihood of further positive changes to the
Covid capacity rules, it has been decided that we will revert to General Meetings being
held at our Clubrooms with effect from Tuesday 19th April.
44Our 5-year lease on the clubrooms is due to expire on 30th September. We have
therefore asked the City of Bayswater to enter negotiations with us for a new lease
period. Lastly, little to report on Code 404, apart from the Minister for Transport in the
newly elected State Government, is still the same person.

Our sincere apologies go to Roy Chapman who had spent (obviously) a lot of time and
effort into doing two write-ups (5 pages each) for the magazine. Unfortunately
although used, we had to totally pull them apart and remove the photos as they
weren't sent separately and we were unable to size them appropriately for what is
required for the magazine.

6Mid Week Brunch Run – 11 March
The alarm went off at the ungodly hour of 7am
and I stumbled out of bed for a quick shower and
a light breakfast. Then it was into the trusty MGB
to fight the morning rush hour traffic. Luckily most
of it was travelling in the opposite direction.
I reached the Bean2Brook café in Pickering Brook
in good time for a cup of their delicious coffee and
a chat with my fellow travellers. There were about
15 MG’s lined up of all shapes and sizes.
We headed off in a fairly close convoy but that
didn’t last too long as we had a couple of
lead-foots in the lead. I had to keep up with them,
as I didn’t have a navigator, so it made for some
fairly spirited driving. The first section was along
some lovely twisty turney roads through the hills.
We stopped several times at junctions for some
of the others to catch up, but we soon lost
them again.
7We then came to a stretch of long, sweeping curves, where you could really get your
pedal to the metal !
In no time al all, we arrived at the Serpentine Dam Café, just as they were opening
for the day. With brunch orders placed, we had time for a bit of socializing before the
coffees and food arrived. It was well worth the wait, and we all came away with a
full belly.
I am not sure whether I took the most direct route home, but it seemed to take forever.
It didn’t help that there were road works on the Albany highway, that meant quite a
long wait at a red traffic light, behind 4 large trucks, which in turn, took some getting
past, once we started moving again. I also went through the middle of Armadale which
had it’s own major road works, which slowed everything down a bit.
Despite all that, I got home, unscathed in the old red beast, and commenced to give it a
wash and vacuum out, in preparation for the Show and Shine that was on in a couple of
days.
All together, a very enjoyable drive up into the Perth Hills, with a great bunch of like
minded club members

11MGA Register Brunch Run
14 March 2021
A crisp and bright Autumn morning provided a
splendid day of perfect weather for our morning
run, although rising to 28 degrees later! The carpark
near the KFC on Stoneville Road at 8.30am was a
perfect meeting place for 12 MGAs and one MGB GT
to gather. Joining the run were MGA owning
members of both the MG Owners Club and the TC
Owners Club. Frank and Judith Watson’s MGA
presented in very lovely British racing green livery
with bonnet vents and aggressive styling plus an
awesome hardtop carved from a single piece of
ivory (OK not really and in this world of animal
preservation more like environmentally friendly
painted top but gleaming like the lost ivory of an
Allan Quartermaine adventure). Judith later told me
that the hardtop didn’t look anywhere like it did
today and required a bit of work to get it looking as
is – an excellent piece of workmanship and a credit
to them. TCOC member Daryl Robins’ lovely MGA
1600 Deluxe roadster provided a touch of rarity,
only a total of 70 of this model having been
produced at Abingdon, in 1960/61.
MGCC members Mark Dickinsen and Peter Hagarty,
together with Run Captain Tony Ford in his
supercharged 1600 MkII, swelled the ranks of red
MGAs of various hues; while the white stallion MGA
of Club member Kerry and Kerry Malone with
performance wheels was sublime and its owner
reminded me of a scene from the Avengers (Steed
and Mrs. Peel not Thor or Captain America!), while
my silver 1600 provided a touch of class!
The range of car colours and engine sizes (1500,
1600 plus supercharged) provided a kaleidoscope of
colours and roaring throttle noise as we started out
on the run. About half of the cars went topless in the
morning sunshine.
Our destination was the Oakover Grounds in the
Swan Valley some 74 Km away. The route chosen
was magnificent with long stretches to let the
throttle open up, lovely bends where you could
12watch the flowing aerodynamic lines of the MGA cut the air with wire wheels, steel
wheels and performance wheels glistening in the sun – beautiful to behold.
The highlight was the roller-coaster roads which provided a G force and
cemented the cars to the road. The MGA design certainly demonstrated the next step
of evolution of the marque. If you were driving topless and had never been on the roller
-coaster roads it provided much exhilaration - not that much different from doing a
roller-coaster for the first time except fewer rattles and no discernible screams! My son
certainly enjoyed these parts as he was filming the entire run very bravely!
Regrettably, like previous drives, we did go through country that had clearly been
bushfire damaged and still remains very stark in some places. It will be good when the
rains arrive and hopefully the fresh green of regrowth will start to show.
The run provided for groups of cars matching speed and only once did a group of us
have to do a turnaround – pays to look at the route markings rather than follow
another! But no matter, we caught up and reached our destination literally as a 1 – 12
finish with each car driving up to take the place next to the one parking. Reminded you
of the Le Mans days!
As usual a crowd gathered to look and appreciate the cars and take photos – especially
with their young children who perhaps when they become adults will seek out
ownership of the marque.
The Oakover Grounds Café was a perfect choice to relax from the drive and take in the
ever-brightening day. Serving a delicious range of food everyone ordered big breakfasts
with copious coffees and the younger attending went for milk shakes! Service was
excellent. Longstanding MGA owner Andy Fairweather, a Club member from a few
decades ago, joined the group for brunch and was clearly heard promising to get his
lovely black 1600 MkII re-registered and back on the road.
Many participants chatted about parts availability and the merits of Moss Motors,
Rimmer Bros or eBay and I got to learn a bit more about the MG Owners Club and their
members activities driving their cars around Australia and parts of Britain and Europe.
A few of us left early but reconvened to enjoy the Show n Shine and Concours event
scheduled for that afternoon.

Concours d’Elegance – Show ‘n’ Shine
Sunday 14 March 2021
Bright cloud free skies and a maximum of 28
degrees, what a perfect day for the Annual
and popular Club event, the Concours
d’Elegance – Show ‘n’ Shine! The event’s
location was at Bayswater Riverside Gardens’
green parkland alongside the calm waters of
the Swan river. A backdrop of mature
gumtrees and the heritage listed Garret Road
bridge formed the backdrop for a very large
turnout of cars from Club members as well as
the MGTC Owners Club (celebrating their 60th
anniversary in 2021) and MG Owners Club.
The opportunity to admire beautifully
presented rarer models was a bonus on the
day. These Marques included a gorgeous MG
J2, a credit to owners Allan and Jeanne
Herring who purchased the car in 1972 in
pieces and which Allan rebuilt and put on the
road in 1992. An excellent restoration and
legend. Next to the J2 was the magnificent
MG
Tickford SA Coupe of Ron and Jan Kilcullen. I
saw this car some 15 years ago and it still
impresses me, as it did for the attending
general public.
The rows of MGF’s in all colours and
modifications were superb and gave me a
few ideas for my son’s MGF! The MGBs were
also awesome and you could see how the
designers used the B series to come up with
the MGF.
The Midgets provided an excellent row of the
model demonstrating classic lines and the
MG8s were exceptional. The display of the
MG Y and Magnette models brought a smile
as a number of my relatives owned these
including one very colourful Aunt who I recall
was always racing up to our house on stone
driveway at full speed, braking and sliding to
19a stop and then opening the door with a bright
smile, smell of gin and lavender with latest boyfriend
from one of the colonies in tow (they never lasted
long, she always got bored easily!!).
Of course (and not to be biased) the MGAs provided
the best turnout with almost a dozen cars!
I was particularly delighted to have been able to
park next to the MGTC display courtesy of
the MGTC Owners club. I had some excellent talks
with TC owners and unfortunately missed talking to
TC Legend Mike Sherrell but his display of TC and TC
Special were compensation. For those who don’t
know, Mike is a global expert on all things TC and TC
Specials and has written extensively and toured the
globe in TC models. His books TCs Forever! and TCs
Forever–More! are the definitive go-to reference
books for TC owners everywhere and reflect his
vast experience with owning and restoring MGTCs
over many decades.
There was a steady stream of the public which was
pleasing and at one stage I had a young couple ask
if the MGA was available as a wedding car!
20Apparently, they were very interested in
having the groom being delivered to his
execution (sorry, meant Wedding). I declined
as I said that the MGA tended to stall terribly
when close to a church.
A good chat with a number of members and
the public and the ever-youthful Tim
Harland MG repair and service specialist took
place and the time moved very fast. Tim was
responsible for the ground up restoration of
my MGA and some 15 years later it still
remains in as new condition. Mike Markham
was charming and apart from natter about
MGAs his discussion on his late father’s very
extensive and unique car collection was
excellent.
Club President Doug Bush was in fine form at
the presentation of trophies to winners and
was adeptly assisted by handsome trophy
attendant Tony Ford! Congratulations to all
the winners and all the cars that entered
Concours.
Overall an excellent day, efficiently
coordinated by chief organiser Tony Ford and
ably assisted by volunteers, judges and
unmentioned MG groupies!

22Jaguar Track Day Regularity – 16th March
I thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the Jaguar Track Day
Regularity event at Barbagallo Raceway. For me personally it was
my first regularity event, although I’ve driven at the circuit many times. 36 cars took
part with a mixture of classics and moderns including three from our club. Sarah Fry
was driving their green MGB roadster, Peter Fry was driving their White MGB roadster
both fitted with hardtops for the day and I was driving my MGF (with the soft top in
place). We were split into six groups of six cars, grouped on perception of lap times.
Each run with the group would consist of a warm-up lap with a flying start to lap 2,
followed by a flying lap 3 and a cool-down lap 4.
Our first run was compromised with the Dorian timing device fitted to each car failing
to record all bar 4 cars lap times. It turns out that the batteries were flat and had not
been charged. A quick swap over of 32 devices took place before we got out for our
second runs. After two full runs we were then
re-organised into new groups with cars of very similar
lap times for runs 3 and 4. I must say it was interesting
to be grouped with Shelby Cobras and to be matching
their lap times.
My strategy of going like the clappers and then just
hoping to match that time didn’t really work, as my
usual instinct of trying to beat the previous lap time
kicked in.
Although I was pleased that my two fastest lap times
were within a second of each other, 27 other drivers’
top two lap times were closer than mine!
Peter and Sarah had much closer lap times and
finished a very impressive 6th and 8th out of 36 – well
done to both.
After our fourth run we reconvened at the briefing
room for lunch (included in our entry fees), with some
banter and results presentation. Again, another well
organised and enjoyable track day from the Jaguar
Car Club. It has not yet been decided if their
traditional track days of June and September will also
be changed to Regularity events at this stage.

As always, please let us know of any competition events you hear about that we haven’t
promoted. And if you do take part in any event, please give us some feedback as to how
it went.
Here’s to a rapid and fun April.
State Motorkhana Round 1 – Barbagallo infield
21st March 2021
Sunday 21st saw round 1 of the State Motorkhana take place at Barbagallo. Due to a
fixture clash, the event moved from the planned Tiger Kart Club to the infield behind
the pits at Barbagallo Raceway. A Come ‘n’ Try event took place first, starting earlier in
the morning for novice competitors. Followed by round 1 starting at 10:30. With the
main circuit at Barbagallo in action all day for drift series races, we had to wait for any
red incidents or breaks in racing to gain access to the infield. Luckily the footbridge
provided easy access for spectators or participants using the facilities including the
café which was open all day.
The weather made a great entrance with the temperature climbing to 38 degrees and
being in the pit area with very little breeze made standing around on the bitumen
interesting.
With 49 drivers taking part, it was a full day lasting until 4pm. Two circuits running
parallel meant that there wasn’t a big wait between each run though. And the drift
cars constantly whizzing by on the main circuit kept everyone entertained.
Mark Rookledge came for the “come’n’try” event and stayed to compete in the main
event, doing quite well in his standard MGB.
It was interesting to see the number of wrong way penalties on the first circuit,
catching plenty of drivers out including yours truly and Peter Fry. I can only put it down
to being round 1 and rustiness. Luckily I managed to avoid any further wrong ways for

26the other 11 runs, but the damage was already done to my overall time, as a wrong
way penalty gives you a time matching the slowest competitor on that circuit + 5
seconds. As the day progressed, we swapped tips amongst fellow drivers for each
circuit although the general concept was to just go like stink and hope not to get lost.
As always, great fun was had by all on a warm sunny Sunday.

Wellington Dam Picnic Lunch
21st March
We assembled at the Harvey Cheese
factory for a planned departure time of
10.15/30, welcoming some new
members to our club and also 1st timers
for the southern chapter run. After the
briefing we set off on our run down the
S.W Highway towards Burekup, there
were 10 of us with a variety of MGs ‘B’
‘F’ ‘TF’ ‘TD’ and 1 Lotus Elan. Just before
Burekup I noticed in the rear Vision that
we had been joined by another MGF
coloured purple (TORQUE2ME) so now
we were 11.
We carried on through the Ferguson
Valley passing Gnomes Ville before
venturing towards the Crooked Forrest
coming out just south of Dardanup,
onwards up Pile road and eventually
reaching Wellington Dam.
Our approach to the Dam was from the
bottom of the wall where we were
greeted with a magnificent view of the
newly completed Mural which covers all
of the wall, needless to say there were a
significant amount of onlookers taking
advantage of the view and fine (hot)
weather. We had a small delay whilst we
waited to cross the one way bridge with
oncoming traffic, after crossing the
bridge we came across an MGA this time
(A TOPLESS) who had planned to do the
run with us but had missed our
departure time ( apparently there was a
discrepancy with the times published in
the Octagon and the clubs website) so
now we were 12, from here it was up
the hill to the picnic area which is known
as the quarry. We were fortunate that
we were able to park all of our cars
there as parking is limited in the area.
32We found a beautiful shaded area under a
large tree and enjoyed our picnic lunch
and fellowship. Our timing couldn’t have
been better for arriving at the picnic area,
shortly after our arrival another car group
(Ford) arrived and struggled to find
parking.
After the Picnic many of us went to the
lookout to have a closer look at the Mural
and learn about the artist.
All in all an enjoyable day out even though
perhaps a little too warm.
Colin Eastick
