Welcome to Strode College’s End of Year Show 2020
Strode has held an end of year Art Show for several decades and the staff and
students were determined to not let Covid-19 stand in the way of this well-
established tradition. So the 2020 End of Year Show marks another innovative and
creative approach through an E-book, building on the more traditional, historical
venues such as Crispin Hall and Moorlands Factory.
Typically, I’d be welcoming you in person to our End of Year Show, an annual event
that is pivotal in the Art and Design calendar. But this year I am welcoming you
virtually and am delighted that we can still showcase the amazing artwork that is tes-
tament to the efforts and skills of students and staff from Creative Arts and Design.
Quite clearly, this year we needed to reconsider how to celebrate and share the work
undertaken in the visual arts; hopefully you will enjoy the work that is presented in this
book and even recognise some of our artists and their work.
It is pleasing to see that range of disciplines have been explored and are well
represented by the students in Art and Design. I hope you enjoy the references in
props and set design to ‘The Little Shop of Horrors’ which was a joint venture
between our visual and performing arts team. We now need to find a suitable space in
the college to showcase “Audrey!” Other positive collaborations include the live shoe
design brief undertaken with Clarks design and innovation team, which provides our
students with a wonderful insight into corporate design. In an era of resourcefulness
our students have found ways to use their artistic ability to support others. By
example, Amy Anderson and Phoebe Cutler of UAL L3 Extended Diploma in Art &
Design has been generating digital portraits for a nominal fee of £3 with all proceeds
being donated to the National Bailout collective.
Progression from Strode remains very strong, with students accepted atprestigious
HE institutions including Central St Martins, London MET University, Chelsea UAL
London, Falmouth University, AUB Bournemouth and UWE Bristol .
All in all, it has been an incredibly busy and positive year and while I am delighted to
share this book with you, I hope that next year we will all be able to meet face to face
and resume our more traditional experiences which celebrates this wonderful talent
at the End of Year exhibition 2021.

While the advent of the pandemic has impacted on one of the most exciting points
in the art department’s calendar. It is clear from the evidence in this book and the
wonderful images of the events that taken place over the academic year, the art
department has enjoyed a terrifically active and vibrant year.
As artists we value the opportunity to view others work and study the role of visual
language in the world around us, this is clear the ample educational visits and guest
speakers have been able to incorporate this year. Such inspirational sources include
visits to the Tim Walker and Mary Quant exhibitions at the V&A, RAMM in Exeter,
Warner Bros studio, Lacock Abbey, Leica Gallery, Alexander McQueen headquar-
ters, Textiles Red Cross Project, Lucien Freud exhibition at the RA, and for our
international visit, a wonderful residential in New York. Our students have worked
with Rose Hubbard’s creative photography workshop, and with Chris Donoghue,
Architect partner in award winning architects practice Wootton Donoghue. Our col-
laborative projects can be seen in the prop and set making for Strode
College’s production of ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ and the Zombie workshop with
students from the hair and beauty curriculum.
Our themes as an Art department often reflect current affairs, it is no surprise that
this year has had a greater focus upon sustainability and reducing plastic in society.
The year launched with a brief titled ‘Fabrication’ and work with guest speaker and
artist Fiona Campbell, who held an exhibition at Shepton Mallet Prison as part of the
B-wing group. In addition, our students participated in a local litter pick with a view
to both conserving the local landscape and obtaining materials to refashion into
artistic works.
Finally, it is with great pride that I’d like to acknowledge the efforts made by the
students and staff before, during and after lockdown. The success of the progres-
sion that students have made in their study and forwards, to wonderful opportunities
to study Architecture, Graphics, Fashion, Photography at degree level and of course
many other creative routes is a testament to the community that exists in the team
and one that I hope they take forward in their respective creative paths.
I hope you enjoy the academic year presented in this book and join us in 2021 for
our End of Year Show.

individual student projects where costs for materials are prohibitive, as we

The course is delivered in three distinct stages. The
Exploratory Stage encourages exploration of the
potential and limitations of a variety of media and
materials. There is a strong emphasis in developing skills in
observing and recording, in particular you will learn to recog-
nise the importance and functions of
drawing. Regular life-drawing sessions are important at this
stage.
The Pathway Stage encourages you to bring together
skills in working with media and techniques, your ability to
select research methods and processes and to apply your un- Ollie Graham
derstanding of the creative process to set assignments. You
will be encouraged to develop your critical understanding of Painting on board using oil
contemporary, historical and related contexts. paints.
The Confirmatory Stage consists of a final major project and
end of year show. Here you will move towards specialisation
