three sides by water and little known to outsiders—except the most intrepid
New Yorkers. Come discover the neighborhood with Peter Brown. You’ll
explore the twisting byways of Inwood Hill Park, take in sweeping views of
the Harlem River and the Henry Hudson Bridge, and stroll up a forest road
built on top of millions of shells tossed there by generations of pre-
Columbian Native Americans. You’ll gaze at the Hudson River and the
Palisades, seeing first-hand how human engineering has completely
transformed the natural estuary known as the Harlem River. You’ll even get
to visit a secret “Indian Cave.” This guided tour is limited to 10 people; bid a

Random House, 2015. DJ. Signed. |
                    value $65
The autobiography of feminist icon Gloria Steinem,
social activist, writer, lecturer, itinerant feminist
organizer and transformational leader, offers snapshots of dozens of women
she has met crisscrossing America, including portraits of her powerful
partners on speaking tours such as black activist Florynce Kennedy and
Wilma Mankiller, the first woman elected chief of the Cherokee nation. In the
process, she delves into her childhood and her many unchanged causes—
reproductive control, violence against women, civil rights and social justice.
Steinem’s battlefield is global, and she has never recanted, changed sides,
expressed regret or given up. In her ninth decade, Steinem is truer to herself
and her causes than she has ever been. Hardcover signed first edition first
printing book.

Randolph, who died in 2010 at the age of 95, was the
conductor of the Randolph Singers, The Masterwork
Chorus, and the St. Cecilia Chorus, as well as a lecturer on music at NYU, and
for many years he broadcast an acclaimed radio program devoted to serious
music. This book comprises a lucid analysis of the elements of music:
harmony, melody, rhythm, and construction. Randolph believed that anyone
who can listen to music and concentrate on it can also understand it with a
little guidance. Hardcover signed first edition first printing book.

Nathan Englander, For the Relief of Unbearable
                          Urges, Knopf, 1999. DJ. 2000 PEN/Malamud Award,
Sue Kaufman Prize for First Fiction. Signed.
Englander’s first book, stories with a serio-comic take
on the clash of flesh and spirit, viewed mostly through
the prism of an Orthodox Jewish community in Brooklyn, combines a
compassionate grasp of the Orthodox Jewish world with the skeptical
irreverence of one estranged from yet still oddly defined by it. The fiction
that results is a revelation of the human condition.
Nathan Englander, The Ministry of Special Cases, Knopf, 2007. DJ. Signed.
The story of a family’s losses during Argentina’s “dirty war,” when thousands
of people were kidnapped and killed by the military government, becoming
known as “the disappeared.” At the center of the novel’s carefully staged
ironies is Kaddish Poznan, an Argentine Jew, a prostitute’s son, and a man
who steals into the Jewish cemetery at night, hammer and chisel in hand, and
offers “a face-lift for the family name”: he makes the names of disreputable
forebears vanish.
Nathan Englander, What We Talk About When We Talk About Anne Frank,
Knopf, 2012. DJ. Signed. A collection of unflinching tales, the author’s second
collection is poised at the trapdoor between spiritual thirst and physical
hunger. Echoes of the two Isaacs, Bashevis Singer and Babel, can be heard
throughout these pages, though Gogol is somewhere in the neighborhood
too. Englander’s subjects are mercy, vengeance and their moody, intractable
stepchild, righteousness. He is never deaf to the past. The author plants us in
a world where "God no longer raised His own fist in the fight," leaving us to
write the rules ourselves.
