2COMING UP
What is Parliament – ESOL Workbook
Many students will have prior knowledge of their
own political systems but do not understand how
New Zealand’s Parliament works. The concepts
and vocabulary are often difficult to understand
but are necessary to engage in the parliamentary
process. The workbook has been designed for
ESOL students, to demystify processes through
reading, writing, speaking and listening activities.
Teachers can select which activities best suit your
students.
Social Actions and Parliament
This resource has been created to link the requirements of a senior Social Studies
standard to parliamentary processes. It looks at the requirements of the Achievement
Standard 91599 (3.4) to the social actions linked to Parliament. It includes activities
designed to develop the student’s understanding of different social actions, why they
may choose some actions over others, and what we can offer at Parliament to help
them take social actions.
Parliament XR - learning resource
Designed to accompany the Parliament XR app, the resource connects the virtual tour,
which can be viewed on a smartphone, tablet, or VR headset, to a series of classroom
activities including a scavenger hunt, values activities and short research tasks. This
links into Level 4 and 5 of the NZ Curriculum.
Democracy’s response in a crisis
In New Zealand, emergency powers are exercised rarely. A resource has been
developed to outline the emergency powers put in place, how features of our
democracy could be challenged by these measures, and what safeguards to our
democratic processes have been put in place.
3MEET THE TEAM
Ben Logan-Milne - Education Lead
I’ve been at Parliament for thirteen years, eight of
which in Education. I enjoy beard cultivation and
funk covers. I’m also deeply traumatised by the
Wattie’s monster from the 90s ads.
Jessie Flannery - Education Adviser
Forged in the mines of Central Otago I’ve come to
Parliament through a variety of regional
museums. You’ll find me singing musical theatre
and quoting Lord of the Rings out of context.
Lisa Gray - Education Adviser
I’ve worked as a teacher for over 15 years and am a
recent addition to the Education team. My
specialised field (and passion) is ESOL. I enjoy a
really hot curry and a hint of Chanel No. 5.
Erin Jellyman - Education Adviser
I’ve been with the Education team for eighteen
months, coming from museum and heritage
studies. I like niche pop culture references,
provincial museums and talking about Whanganui.
Troy Murphy - Education Adviser
I’m a trained teacher who has arrived at Parliament
via Te Papa and Space Place. I have an affinity for
90s boybands such as Westlife, Backstreet Boys,
and Blue, and doing the Macarena.
Caroline Wallis - Education Adviser
I am a mastercrafter and Icelandic music lover

who, until the end of last year, had been a
secondary school teacher for 23 years. I am now
