Education Newsletter, Term 1, 2021
The Parliamentary Education Office (PEO) welcomes back all of our dedicated HaSS educators
for a new year of engaging learning. The PEO provides fun, factual and free resources to
enhance civic literacy throughout Western Australia. In these uncertain times we are dedicated to
ensuring these resources are highly accessible for both face to face and remote delivery models.
All about Edith
This year marks the centenary of the election of the first woman
to a Parliament in Australia. That woman was Edith Cowan and
it was in the Parliament of Western Australia that she was
elected. To mark this significant event, check out our curriculum
linked Edith Cowan Centenary Packs.
The primary edition includes a script for a whole of class play, a
school assembly play and a variety of curriculum linked fact sheets
and learning activities. The secondary edition is also curriculum
linked and provides great opportunities for your students to reflect
upon Edith’s significant contribution. Underpin this year’s
programming by celebrating one of this country’s most important
historical and social figures. Why not make one of the following
100
dates, Edith Cowan Assembly Day?
• Friday 12 March, (the day before the forthcoming state
election and the very date 100 years ago that Edith was elected)
1921-2021
• Wednesday 28 July, (the centenary of Edith’s first speech in
Parliament) .
The Parliamentary Education Office will also be making an exciting
Edith Cowan elected to the announcement for primary schools on Edith’s election centenary
Parliament of Western Australia date, so keep an eye out on our socials.
New Role plays
Before you plan this year’s program, don’t forget to checkout
our role play page. Each of these interactive dynamic learning
activities is curriculum linked and based on actual Bills and Laws
considered by the Parliament of Western Australia. Why not set
your classroom up as a Parliamentary Chamber and really immerse
your students in the legislative process?

Tours are back
School tours are back and booking up fast. With many schools
missing out last year, we encourage you to get in early to avoid
disappointment. Like you, the PEO needs to remain flexible
to any changes in our state’s public health protocols, so in the
event your tour is cancelled all reasonable attempts will be made
to reschedule. You can also add value to your tour by extending
your visit and booking a self-guided treasure hunt of the grounds.
Students can compete in small groups to see who’s first in finding
the ‘hidden’ treasure. Learn more.
Rodney’s roving and Macey’s moving
Our Parliamentary education mascots Rodney and Macey, based
on the Black Rod and the Mace are now in animated form.
These short videos are a quick way for your students to learn
about an important feature of bicameralism: the roles of
the President and the Speaker in each of the two chambers.
Located on the final page of our Year 5 & 6 resource, watching
these animations come alive is a great revision exercise
once your students have completed the ‘POWA of the People’.
Regional Outreach Program
The PEO had a wonderful time delivering over 20 Pop-up
Parliaments in Kalgoorlie-Boulder late last year and this term we
will be visiting Esperance. Teachers wishing to book sessions
can lodge an expression of interest by ringing 08 9222 7259.
Visit our Regional Outreach page for updates and further details
on the other regions we will be visiting this year.

Resources for Courses
Politics and Law teachers now have two brand new Western
Australia specific learning resources for Year 11 and 12 students.
The curriculum linked resource for P&L General Unit 1: Political
and Legal Decision Making, which includes accompanying
teachers notes delves into the role of Parliamentary Committees
and the important role they have in informing Parliament.
This resource uses an actual committee report which focuses
on how to reduce the effects of illicit drug use in our
state and contains active learning opportunities throughout.
The second ATAR resource, entitled the Goldilocks Challenge,
is perfect for teachers teaching Politics and Law Unit 2:
Representation and Justice. It focuses on the syllabus point
on how individuals, political parties and pressure groups can
participate in the electoral process. In an election year, the
Goldilocks Challenge puts the student in the driver’s seat
as an independent candidate contesting an election using
interactive electorate profiles to assist them in building
their policy platforms. This resource provides opportunities to
interpret statistics in an engaging way, whilst applying this
knowledge to the democratic process.
