THE BRITISH BMG FEDERATION
The British BMG Federation is an organisation that celebrates all things fretted.
We aim to promote the performance and learning of banjos, mandolins and
guitars by creating educational opportunities for players of all ages to develop
and improve their skills on their chosen instruments. We run workshops and
courses and also advertise courses run by other like–minded individuals and
organisations.
The Federation produces quarterly newsletters, which include news,
reviews, features, music, instrument technique and a diary of events. For

Summer School
As well as organising this biennial Festival, the Federation runs an annual
residential weekend Summer School. The 2018 Summer School will take place on the
1st-3rd June at Higham Hall, Bassenthwaite Lake, Cockermouth, Cumbria CA13 9SH
There will be 3 courses:
Classic finger-style 5-string Banjo with Chris Sands
The Baroque Concerto Grosso for mandolin, mandola, mandocello,
guitar and bass with Mauro Squillante
Group Soup – Folk Band Arranging and Playing for mixed instruments
with Nigel Gatherer

Symposium
The Federation has organised two Symposiums with concerts, speakers and workshops
covering a multitude of topics related to fretted instrument playing, education and
history. It is hoped there will be a further Symposium in the not too distant future;
news of this will be published in newsletters, on our website, on the BMG Federation
Symposium Facebook page and on Twitter.
British BMG Federation National Orchestra Project (BNFO)
This initiative kicked off in January 2017 with a weekend of rehearsals in East Kilbride
under the direction of Peter Stewart. Everyone agreed it was a great success and
something to be developed. The fledgling orchestra is meeting again in
January 2018 and just before the Festival in March 2018.
Festival goers will get their first opportunity to hear the
BNFO at the Saturday afternoon concert. For more

The Fretful Federation Mandolin Orchestra Festival 2018 is being hosted by the Fretful Federation Mandolin Orchestra. The Brighton based group was founded in 1995. Originally playing pieces typical of mandolin orchestras from the beginning of the twentieth century, the Fretful Federation has expanded and developed its repertoire to include a wide range of material including exciting contemporary music by local composers, as well as classical and popular pieces and concertos. There are currently about 25 members from all over East and West Sussex who meet every week on a Tuesday evening in East Brighton. Everyone is welcome. There is no audition. We can even supply instruments and teach people from scratch if necessary! We give around 6 performances a year, usually with guest soloists and our concerts have a reputation for variety and entertainment. This is due in no small part to our wonderfully engaging musical director, Lindsay Stoner. We warmly welcome you to the South Coast and hope you have a wonderful weekend. Festival Venue All events with the exception of the Festival Dinner and Ceilidh will take place at Davison High School for Girls Selbourne Rd Worthing West Sussex BN11 2JX Lying just to the East of Worthing town centre Davison High School for Girls is set in an attractive modern campus . The school caters for around 1000 girls aged 11-16 and is famous for its exceptional com- munity involvement and for its unusual uniform! The school shares its site with the Davison Leisure Centre so if you fancy a workout between workshops bring your gym kit! Getting to the Venue By Car There is some car parking at the venue and plenty of on-street parking in the surrounding area. Parking has some limited restrictions on Friday and Saturday, but is unrestricted on Sunday. By Train The nearest station is East Worthing which is a few minutes walk north of the venue. The better served Worthing main line station is 1 mile to the west of the venue. By Bus The ‘Pulse’ leaves every 10 minutes on Saturday, and every 20 minutes on Sunday from Worthing Marine Parade stop F, which is on the seafront outside the Dome Cinema, round the corner from the Chatsworth Hotel. Get off at Seldon Rd (3 stops), turn left into Ladydell Rd then right into Selbourne Rd. The Festival Dinner & Ceilidh will be held at the Worthing Assembly Hall Stoke Abbott Road, Worthing BN11 1HQ. The venue for this years dinner and dance is situated just north of Worthing town centre and is a 10 minute walk from the sea front hotels. Friday Night Concert Marijke & Michiel Wiesenekker The Fretful Federation first met Marijke and Michiel in Holland in October 2012. It was our first trip abroad as an orchestra and we were thrilled with the experience of meeting and playing with the musicians from the Dutch Regional Guitar and Mandolin Orchestra, the RGMO. Marijke was preforming with them as a soloist and we spent a memorable evening socialising and jamming with her and her brother Michiel. We are delighted to be bringing them to the UK so we can all share another memorable evening together, and learn from them in their Saturday workshops. We began our duo in 1999 and have been performing as the Amsterdams Gitaar en Mandoline Duo since then. We have released several cds together as a duo. We were born and raised in Amsterdam, but the heart of our musical development blossomed primarily in Wuppertal, Germany. This city has been a creative hotbed in the middle of the Bergisches Land for many years because of the talented young musicians from all over the world who come there to study. It has been rewarding and inspiring to collaborate with so many of these musicians over the years. We feel very much at home playing in a variety of musical styles including pop and rock, blue- grass, folk, light jazz or classical. As long as the piece of music has beautiful melodies and moves us we might try it. We also have many original compositions and perform on a variety of electric and acoustic instruments. We love the intimate feeling of small concert venues and we regularly present concerts and workshops at our home base of Baumstrasse 14 in Wuppertal. We have also performed in many countries throughout the world including Russia, Japan, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, France and the United States and have made wonderful connections in all of these places. WORKSHOP CODE A1 CHORO
TUTORS DAVE GRIFFITHS & MIKE PRYOR
This workshop aims to introduce the style, rhythms and forms of Brazilian Choro music.
Through listening to examples and then through the study of a typical choro tune you will
learn how all the elements fit together: the vibrant rhythmic accompaniment and the
dynamic melodic lines. We will play an arrangement together then you will have the
opportunity to learn how to accompany and then interpret a tune as it would be played in
a Roda de Choro.
Parts with melody and chords will be available for study prior to the workshop

WORKSHOP CODE A2 COME & TRY THE CLASSICAL GUITAR
TUTOR TREVOR JONES
This workshop is designed to introduce classical guitar technique, concentrating mainly
on right hand fingering. We will try out different right hand arpeggio techniques, ranging
from extremely simple to not very difficult.
Trevor Jones is a classical guitar teacher from Hastings. He became interested in classical
guitar after leaving school and moved to London where he studied with Julian Byzantine and Gilbert
Biberian. He performed with Biberian's pioneering Omega ensemble in the 1970s.
Trevor started his full time teaching career in 1970 at the Spanish Guitar Centre in London and was teaching
in the London Borough of Lewisham and in schools in East Sussex until he retired from school teaching last
year. Trevor now teaches privately, although officially
retired.

WORKSHOP CODE A3 TIPS AND TRICKS FOR GUITAR TUTOR MICHIEL WIESENEKKER This workshop is designed to enable participants to discuss any questions they may have and try out different tricks and techniques on their instruments (for example righthand technique (Fingerstyle), open tunings, equipment, set-up, exercises, arpeggio-techniques etc...) WORKSHOP CODE A5 IMPROVE YOUR SIGHT READING ON CLASSIC BANJO TUTOR ELIAS SIBLEY Sight reading is an essential musical skill and highly useful, not just in ensemble situations, but also as a tool to speed up the learning process and to potentially access a greater range of repertoire. This workshop is intended to be an enjoyable (yes, really!) approach to sight reading in an ensemble setting, with practical examples. Closely related topics, such as chord patterns and fingerboard knowledge will also be discussed. Come and enjoy learning some new music and honing this highly useful skill in a friendly and supportive environment! Elias Sibley is one of the UK’s leading exponents of the 5-string finger-style banjo – the earliest form of finger- style banjo, often referred to as ‘classic banjo’. Having studied the instrument from the age of 10 with James Allgrove, Elias has since gone on to enjoy a busy career, appearing at concerts and festivals throughout the UK and overseas. Most recently, he has collaborated with classic banjo maestro, Chris Sands and regularly appears with duo partner, Florence Petit as part of Duo Dekacord. Elias is equally active as a teacher, having led banjo summer schools and workshops for the BMG Federation for many years. We will compare the musical accents of Scotland, Ireland and the United States. Nigel Gatherer has been involved in the Scottish traditional music scene for more than forty years as a per- former, composer, collector, teacher and publisher. He has taught at classes and workshops throughout the UK and in 2017 he is being inducted into the Scottish Traditional Music Hall of Fame. His method of teaching is subtle, fun and effective. WORKSHOP CODE B1 COME & TRY THE LUTE TUTOR TOBY CARR Examine basic playing technique for the lute and the similarities and differences to other plucked instruments. Learn how to produce a good tone on the lute and be able to read English lute tablature. Everyone will have a chance to play an instrument and by the end of the session play an ensemble piece together. Maximum Number of Participants 8, unless you have your own lute. We will then work on examples from the general guitar repertoire and participants are welcome to bring their own examples of music which can be used to show how exercises can be used to combat technical problems which might arise. There will also be time to discuss general technical issues and their solutions. Peter Stewart lectures at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and the Aberdeen City Music School and has previously taught at Aberdeen College of Music and Performing Arts. Peter performed for 16 years with Irish guitarist Tracey Boyd; they were highly praised by respected critics for their musically sensitive, emotive and stylish performances. The duo performed throughout the UK and Europe and broadcast for BBC Radio Scotland. During that period, Peter directed the Glasgow Classical Guitar Workshop and the very successful Oatridge International Guitar Festival. Peter is a successful composer and his music has been performed as far afield as the USA, South America and Russia. WORKSHOP CODE B3 BAOBAB the Rock & Pop Workshop TUTORS MARIJKE AND MICHIEL WIESENEKKER In this workshop we would like to introduce our instruction book "Baobab" and have a closer look at some of the songs - there is a lot of music to choose from, African rhythm, blues, bluegrass, gospel, reggae, rock, Spanish chill-out and more! On our website you can get an impression and hear some sound samples: http://wiesenekker.com/en/baobab Baobab, a big tree in the heart of Africa, refers to the roots of pop & rock music. Essential ingredients are rhythm and groove with an African heartbeat. What you learn is chords, improvisation and new songs. It will be a groovy and swinging session! Beside the songs in the book we have also made new arrangements of instrumentals, traditional music and songs. So we can also add a new song. Playing songs and dances we shall sooth a baby with a lullaby, hear the tragic tale of a Sicilian princess and raise the roof with dancing from medieval Piedmont and 17th century Venice. Music will be supplied in advance and also available in TAB format. The arrangements will suit any melody instrument but will not include chords. Valmai and Bryan play English concertinas, an instrument invented in 1827 by Sir Charles Wheatstone. We are very fond of dance tunes played by old Sussex village musicians of the 18th. & 19th c, many of whose hand written music books are held by the Sussex Archaeological Society in Barbican House, Lewes. WORKSHOP CODE C1 BLUEGRASS MUSIC : duelling banjos, mandolins and guitars
TUTORS MIKE PRYOR & RICHARD HOLLAND
Banjo, mandolin and guitar are the core of the classic bluegrass band, backing the singer
and then stretching out with ‘hot’ instrumental breaks. In this workshop Richard and Mike
will demonstrate how these three instruments work together to create the ‘high
lonesome’ sound, including backup and soloing techniques, and the class will become a
fully-functioning powerful bluegrass band.

Mike Pryor began playing music in 1969 and has performed as a
semi-professional musician in acoustic-based groups ever since
on mandolin and guitars, his main Instruments. Performances
have included television, radio and numerous festivals in UK
and mainland Europe, including Glastonbury. He currently plays
with Brejeiro, Bill Smarme and the Bizness and Antique
Popsters. Mike has taught at various Festivals, including BMG
Federation Festivals 2008 & 2014 and also at the Federation’s
2016 & 2017 Summer Schools.
Richard Holland’s involvement in acoustic music started in
the Folk Clubs playing guitar; He then discovered Bluegrass
music and found out what a Banjo was all about! The
5-string banjo became his first instrument since then has
regularly played in Bluegrass Bands. As well as banjo,
Richard still plays guitar and the mandolin has become
an interesting and challenging recent addition. In 2014
Richard joined Mike Pryor to tutor the first bluegrass band
workshop to be held at a BMG Federation Festival. Richard
taught the Bluegrass Band classes with Mike at the BMG
Summer School Weekends in 2016 and 2017.

This workshop will cover fundamental technique, tuning, history, chords/melodies and more tuning… James David Smith BMus (Hons) is a performer/teacher of guitar, mandolin, ukulele and banjo. During his time at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama James studied with the celebrated concert artists John Mills and Christopher Stell (Eden-Stell Duo) and performed for some of the world’s finest guitarists includng Craig Ogden, Gary Ryan, Ben Verdery and Nigel North. In 2005 he was awarded the Stuart Cohen Prize for guitar. James has toured extensively in the UK and overseas with appearances at the Wales Millennium Centre, The Bolivar Hall, Hammersmith Apollo, Bloomsbury Theatre and The French Legation (Austin TX) and has also performed on BBC Radio and KGSR (USA). TUTOR FRANCES TAYLOR
Examine a mandolin concerto in the Italian Baroque style accompanied by other orchestral
instruments. This popular workshop, the fifth in the concerto series, allows participants to
experience the sonorities of bowed and plucked strings together whilst exploring the
conventions of 18th century music. Details of the music will be sent to participants in
advance.

Frances Taylor studied under the internationally acclaimed virtuoso mandolinist Ugo Orlandi at the Conserv-
atoire of Padua (1994-98). She is also a qualified teacher (LTCL, Cert Ed) and has a MMus in mandolin perfor-
mance.
Frances has given concerts throughout Britain, playing in venues such as London’s South Bank and working
with orchestras such as the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House. She has also performed in France, Italy, Ger-
many, Denmark and Finland.
An enthusiastic teacher of the mandolin, Frances runs workshops throughout England and Scotland and she
pioneered a unique Mandolin Project in London schools (2002-13). She was tutor for the European Guitar and
Mandolin Youth Orchestra in Ferrara, Italy, (2007) and she has been a specialist examiner for Trinity Leban Con-
servatoire of Music and Dance.
Frances also loves to write about music and her memoir, The Mandolin Lesson, was published in 2014.

We will rehearse in groups of acoustic and electric fretted instruments as well as voice and percussion before bring- ing everyone together to form a big band. We will be working on quickly learning the songs and putting them together as a band. Players of all instruments and abilities are wel- come. This workshop will be particularly relevant to younger players. Iain, Craig and Duncan are three musicians who have all become involved with music through the Lanarkshire Guitar and Mandolin Association (LGMA) and have progressed from learning in instrumental classes to teaching their own instrumental classes with the LGMA and assist- ing with the youth orchestra, Mango. Craig is currently studying towards a Bachelor of Educa- tion in Music at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland while Iain has completed his degree in music and is now studying a Masters in Music at Hochschule für Musik und Tanz, Köln in Ger- many. Duncan graduated from the University of Highlands and Islands with a BA (hons) in Popular Music several years ago and now teaches guitar and plays in a function duet. WORKSHOP CODE D2 DISCOVERING FINGERSTYLE UKULELE TUTOR COLIN TRIBE This is the title of Colin's soon to be published tutor/method for Schott Music and he will take you gently through a couple of the chapters in an exploration of this facet of the instrument that is growing in popularity alongside the more well known sing'n'strum. Maximum Number of Participants 15 - Ukuleles will be provided Colin Tribe is a self-taught musician born in 1946 growing up as a teenager with the sounds of skiffle, jazz, American rock and then the Beatle explosion. The guitar was his second instrument (after recorder in Prima- ry School - his only formal lessons) and by the age of 17 he had music published for guitar in BMG and a song writing contract. Already married at 19 and not wanting to be a full time professional player he became a school music teacher and whilst Head of Music at Highbury Grove in London he was invited to a work on Trinity College of Music's Electronic Keyboard Exams and Victoria College of Music Diploma level Exam Mate- rial. WORKSHOP CODE D4 COME AND TRY THE CLASSIC BANJO TUTOR ELIAS SIBLEY This successful class, which Elias has run for many years at the BMG Summer Schools, is a fun and practical introduction to playing the classic banjo – the original finger-picking style of the 5-string banjo. This class was originally designed for guitarists, mandolinists and bluegrass/plectrum/tenor banjoists, who wished to transfer their skills to the classic banjo, but is also suitable for beginners with no previous experience of any instrument or music reading. The class moves logically from learning the basic method of holding the instrument, to plucking the strings, forming chord shapes and finally, to playing an actual classic banjo composition! Registered Charity No. SC038957 2018 Banjo Mandolin Guitar Festival CONDITIONS AND RULES FOR CONTESTS Sunday March 4th Introduction: Since the British BMG Federation’s formation in 1929, fretted instrument players have attended Festivals to meet, learn, gain inspiration and compete in a friendly fashion. Unless otherwise stated in the Syllabus, contests will be judged on musical and technical ability. Contestants are encouraged to bring new ideas to their performances whilst keeping within the rules and conditions below. The Federation has a duty to participants to ensure there is a level playing field with no external interference that affects the ability of players to compete fairly. Contestants wishing to stage anything that goes beyond the playing of music within the given rules should contact the Federation committee before submitting their entry. 1. Eligibility: All contestants shall be of amateur status (except Class 22, up to 10% of orchestras, and conductors). An amateur is considered to be someone who does not derive the majority of livelihood from performing or teaching music and/or who has not studied music to degree level eg BMus, BEd. Contests are open to both members and non-members but there is a separate scale of fees (See Condition 13) for all contests (except 18 and 19) where one or more entrants are non-members. 2. Music: Except where indicated in the syllabus, a copy of all music must be provided for the Adjudicator. The music, bearing an identifying name and contest number, must be handed to the Adjudicator or Adjudicator’s secretary prior to each contest or when the contestant’s name is called for the contest and will be available for collection by the end of the Festival. Any changes to the music must be clearly marked on the Adjudicator’s copy. The Adjudicator will take into account the complexity and suitability of the music. It is the contestant’s responsibility to respect the rights of copyright owners, where applicable, by playing from original music scores. Photocopies of copyrighted music can however be provided to adjudicators. Information on copyright can be obtained from Music Publishers Association or the contact person at point 16 below. 3. Selection of Pieces: Contestants may not select a piece they have performed at either of the two previous Festivals or which they are performing in another contest at the current Festival. No solo concertos may be performed apart from in solo contests. 4. Arrangements: It is the contestant’s responsibility to seek permission from the copy- right owner if they wish to make arrangements or adaptations of copyrighted music. 5. Accompaniment: Unless otherwise stated in the Syllabus of Contests, accompaniment on any one instrument is permitted in solo contests; contestants must provide their own accompaniment. 31 Banjo Mandolin Guitar Federation Festival 2018- Worthing,
6. Double/Multiple Entries: No contestant shall be allowed to enter any contest more
than once apart from contests 17, 19, 21 & 22. A person entering any of contests 17, 19, 21
& 22 more than once must do so with different groups/orchestras in each case.
Contestants may enter no more than 8 contests, excluding contests 18, 19, 20 and 27, the
reason being that timetabling of contests becomes impossible to manage.
7. Programme: Contestants will be informed of approximate times and must be present
when their name is called.
8. Additional Support Needs: Bearing in mind that disabled access may not be available at
the Festival venue, contestants with additional support needs, such as those with limited
physical capabilities, should make their requirements known by notifying the person
detailed at Condition 16 below.
9. Adjudication: Adjudicators’ decisions are final and will be supported by a result sheet
with marks gained and comments on the performance. Adjudicators shall have the power
to withhold the award of a trophy in any contest where they feel the required standard
has not been met.
10. Trophies and Awards: Cups and trophies awarded remain the property of the British
BMG Federation. Winners are required to return these to the organisers in time for
presentation at the next Festival. Winners are responsible for having names engraved on
trophies at their own expense and are held responsible for the safekeeping of the
trophies while in their possession. Winners will be required to fill in a ‘loan form’. For
those under the age of 18 years the signature of an adult will be required on the loan
agreement.
11. Special Conditions for Orchestras:
a. At least 90% of orchestras to be of amateur status
b. Orchestras shall consist of 10 or more players of fretted, plucked string instruments
c. In addition to the orchestral instruments at (b), the bass line can be played by up to
3 bass instruments
d. In addition to the orchestral and bass instruments, up to 3 other acoustic instru-
ments are allowed
e. Adjudicators require a copy of the full music score for each piece
f. Orchestras planning to use additional instruments specified in (c) and (d) above
should note that these instruments must take a supporting role and allow the group
to retain the quality of a plucked string orchestra; they must also submit music
scores to the person at point 16 below by November 30th, showing the lines these
instruments will play.
12. Conductors: Except for orchestra contests 18 and 19, no other contests are permitted
to have a conductor.
