A strong figure
in the history of Dresden
No need to bring along birthday gifts for this now long deceased
celebrity. Shortly after his death, he was immortalised in the form
of an equestrian statue – the Goldener Reiter (Golden Horseman).
When Dresdeners commemorate the 350th anniversary of the birth
of the most famous of all Saxon Prince Electors, they will rst and
foremost be celebrating those gifts that Friedrich August I bestowed

who was also King of Poland, combined the self-assuredness of baroque
rule with an enormous understanding of art and made Dresden a royal

The reconstruction of the Residenzschloss, like many of Dresdenʼs

Zwinger since 1719.

New setting for old masters
The Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister: Goethe described the building that
housed this art collection as “a sanctuary”. The poet and statesman
was referring to the Johanneum, the converted royal stables, but around
a hundred years later, the collection was transferred to a new gallery
built by Gottfried Semper as part of the Zwinger complex. The Semper-

bau has undergone several phases of restoration since 2013 and is due
to be completely reopened at the beginning of 2020. A timely move as,
only a few months later, celebrations will commence for the 350th
anniversary of the birth of Augustus the Strong. The Prince Elector of Quartet of musical anniversaries

another anniversary, namely the 250th anniversary of the birth of
Ludwig van Beethoven. It will feature a semi-staged performance of
his opera Fidelio as well as all ve of his piano concertos.

Porzellan-Manufaktur Meissen

Only a few kilometres away from Dresden lies the city of Meissen which
traces its history back over a thousand years. With the Albrechtsburg
towering high above the Elbe and the imposing cathedral, Meissen is
considered to be the cradle of Saxony. The Albrechtsburg is not only the
rst German castle constructed for residential purposes; it is also where
European porcelain was invented, a product that is still made in the
Meissner Manufaktur to this day. It was Augustus the Strong who brought
the alchemist Johann Friedrich Böttger to his court in 1708. In collabo-
ration with Ehrenfried Walther von Tschirnhaus, Böttger succeeded in
producing white porcelain. The manufactory was founded in 1710 and,
until 1863, was located within the Albrechtsburg complex. It is said that Your
