When prescribing
avoid issuing retrospective prescriptions to ALL appliance dispensers/contractors
include full details of product required
avoid the term 'original pack' (OP) as pack sizes often differ between products and patients may receive
inappropriate amounts if the actual quantity is not stated.
always prescribe the smallest amount required to avoid wastage.
Average quantities to prescribe for ONE month are:
Urinary Sheaths: 1 x 30
Leg Bags :

BARRIER CREAMS
Cutimed Protect offers an alternative to Cavilon barrier cream with the added benefit of a 96 hour protection; it is also non-
adherent and would not block pores. Sudocrem tends to block pores in incontinence pads hence reducing its absorbent
properties

July 2019LEG BAGS
The leg bags listed are suitable for collection of urine from indwelling catheters or incontinence sheaths. Leg bags are
intended for daytime use although larger bags may have adequate capacity for overnight use by some patients .Leg bags can
be worn in different positions on the leg e.g. thigh knee or calf; the intended position will determine the length of the
inlet tube. The bags are attached by means of straps which are generally included with each pack of leg bags .
P.S: Wheelchair-bound patients may require bags of a different description to those listed below, the Manfred Sauer would
be more suitable.

July 2019NIGHT BAGS
These are suitable for use for the collection of urine from incontinence sheaths, at night-time. They are generally used in
conjunction with a bag hanger .Supply arrangements for bag hangers tend to vary throughout the country but they are
normally supplied free of charge by relevant companies
Non-Drainable bags:
These bags need to be changed every night as they are non-drainable and for single use only. (NHS Drug Tariff, England
& Wales) They are recommended for use in care homes to reduce the risk of infection and for patients who are looked after
by relatives or carers.These bags should not be attached directly to a catheter. Not recommended for urostomy patients.

July 2019CATHETER VALVES
A catheter valve fits securely into the end of a catheter and can be opened to allow urine to drain out at regular intervals. A
catheter valve is more discreet and comfortable than a drainage bag, allowing your bladder to fill and empty as normally as
possible when there is a catheter in place. They are used only in patients with an indwelling catheter.
Catheter valves should NOT be used without assessment of bladder function by an appropriate healthcare professional.
It is recommended that catheter valves are changed every 5-7 days (NHS Drug Tariff, England & Wales)

July 2019BAG SLEEVES
Sleeves provide a popular alternative to straps of supporting leg bags. It is manufactured from a soft fabric and completely
encases the leg bag to hold it comfortably against the leg for maximum support and security.
The sleeve has a small opening for the tap so that it is easy to empty and also helps to position the leg bag in the sleeve.
Sleeves are particularly good for patients with frail skin, or those who have problems with straps digging into or rubbing
against their leg as it distributes the weight of the urine more uniformly and can prevent tubes from kinking.
