Other new and altered motions and amendments

*S6M-00588 Marie McNair: The Erskine Bridge Turns 50—That the Parliament commemorates
50 years of the Erskine Bridge, which was the first link between West Dunbartonshire and
Renfrewshire over the River Clyde, replacing the Erskine Ferry; understands that the crossing was
opened on 2 July 1971 by HRH Princess Anne and for a period of time, it was the longest cable-
stayed bridge in the world; notes that the bridge is 1.3km in length and 30m wide, with its tallest
support measuring 50m, allowing it to play an important role in carrying over 35,000 vehicles every
day; acknowledges that the Erskine Bridge has been listed for unique architectural and technical
features, and remains one of the most ambitious civil engineering projects ever undertaken in
Scotland, so it’s important to recognise the impact it has made in the past 50 years.

*S6M-00587 Alexander Stewart: Duncan Scott Graduates from the University of Stirling—
That the Parliament congratulates British Olympian Duncan Scott on his graduation from the
University of Stirling; understands that the swimming athlete, who will leave for Japan next week
as part of Team GB, received a 2:1 in Business and Sports Studies after successfully combining
his degree with his record-breaking career in the pool; acknowledges that Duncan who grew up in
Alloa, broke two British freestyle records whilst qualifying for the Tokyo Games, has been part of
Stirling’s Sports Scholarship Programme for the last six years, giving him the flexibility to balance
his degree with training; notes that the sports champion acknowledges personally that despite his
successes in the pool, completing his degree is amongst his top achievements saying that one of
the things he is most proud of is achieving a 2:1 despite not really enjoying school as a result of
his dyslexia and having to balance it with swimming but he eventually ended up enjoying
university; views Duncan as a shining example to all young people; commends him on his focus,
discipline and success, and wishes Duncan and all Team GB the very best of success in Tokyo.

Parliament congratulates the achievement of all those who are currently graduating from the
University of Glasgow, the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow Caledonian University, City of
Glasgow College, The Glasgow School of Art, Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Glasgow Kelvin

College, Glasgow Clyde College, and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow;
notes the incredibly difficult circumstances under which people have graduated this year due to
COVID-19, which makes their academic achievements all the more impressive, and wishes all
graduates the best of luck in their future endeavours.

*S6M-00585 Jackie Baillie: Fiftieth Anniversary of the Erskine Bridge —That the Parliament
celebrates the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Erskine Bridge; notes that the landmark
bridge was opened in July 1971 by Princess Anne; understands that the bridge, which took four
years to build, has become an icon of the West of Scotland landscape; notes with interest that it is
the largest bridge which connects communities either side of the Clyde; celebrates the fact that
Historic Environment Scotland granted the bridge A-listed status three years ago, describing the
bridge as a “state-of-the-art infrastructure landmark in Scotland”; gives credit to the hard fought
local campaign spearheaded by Labour politicians working alongside local people which saw the
Erskine Bridge toll charge removed on 1 April 2006; acknowledges that this has led to a positive
impact on tourism and the West of Scotland economy; further acknowledges that people living on
both sides of the bridge in Erskine and Old Kilpatrick had planned to celebrate the 50th
anniversary by marching to meet in the middle of the bridge but celebrations had to be postponed
due to COVID-19, and hopes that these communities will be able to celebrate this worthy
landmark's impressive anniversary in the near future.

*S6M-00583 Gillian Martin: Watsons of Inverurie - Closure after 182 years—That the
Parliament notes the planned closure in July after 182 years of Watsons in Inverurie, which sells a
variety of DIY equipment and garden supplies; understands the current owner, Mary Sloan, the
first to own the business outside of the Watson family since 1872, is retiring and closing the store;
recognises the business has operated from the same premises since it opened in 1839, initially
opened by A&J Bisset then taken over by Inverurie Provost John MacIntyre Watson and run by his
family for four successive generations prior to Mrs Sloan taking over in the year 2000;
acknowledges the importance to communities of local family-run businesses such as Watsons,
and wishes Mrs Sloan and her team of staff well for the future.

*S6M-00582 Monica Lennon: Remove Discredited BBC Bitesize Climate Change Lessons —
That the Parliament expresses concern that BBC Bitesize online study support resources on
climate change contain a list of positive impacts of a warmer global climate; understands that the
so-called positive impacts listed include "more resources, such as oil, becoming available in
places such as Alaska and Siberia when the ice melts" and that "warmer temperatures could lead
to healthier outdoor lifestyles;" believes that this online resource should immediately be reviewed
and updated and welcomes a commitment from the BBC to undertake a review, following the
intervention of writer and environmental activist, George Monbiot, and a public backlash; is
concerned that learners are being prompted to consider the environmental and economic benefits
of climate change; believes that the geography course specification published by the Scottish
Qualifications Authority and other climate change content must be urgently reviewed; considers
that heatwaves are causing damage to people, property and nature, including as a result of a
devastating fire in Lytton, British Columbia, where residents have been forced to flee their homes
after multiple days of unprecedented heat, with temperatures reaching 49.6 centigrade, a
Canadian record, leading to fast-spreading fires; believes that urgent action is needed to address
the dual threats of the climate emergency and nature emergency, and agrees that climate justice

action and hold governments and corporations to account.

*S6M-00581 Liam McArthur: Pay Student Paramedics Campaign Success —That the
Parliament congratulates the Pay Student Paramedics campaign on its well-deserved victory,
securing a new bursary ahead of the start of the new academic term; notes that the campaign was
started by a group of student paramedics in August 2020 to highlight the discrepancy between the
bursaries made available to students paramedics and those studying other disciplines, and
to press for equivalent funding to be made available to all Scottish student paramedics; recognises
that reports have shown a majority of student paramedics have lived below the poverty line
despite being expected to work the same hours as fully-qualified paramedics, and therefore have
limited time to take on additional work to fund their studies; acknowledges that the Scottish
Parliament held a debate on the issue in October 2020; appreciates the pivotal role that
paramedics have played in meeting the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, and that student
paramedics have stepped up at a time of great need; acknowledges that student paramedics,
unlike student nurses and midwives, have until now had no access to a bursary scheme to support
them during their degree course; hails this as a great achievement for student paramedics across
the country, and hopes the decision will now encourage more young people to enter the
profession.

*S6M-00579 Michelle Thomson: Burn Unlimited Young Enterprise at Carrongrange High
School —That the Parliament congratulates former pupils at Carrongrange High School in

Awards, coming second in the overall UK finals; notes that the company used a laser cutter in the
school to design gifts and decorations that were popular locally in the community, and as far afield
as France and Sweden; recognises that the Scottish Team Programme helps young people in 5th
and 6th year with additional support needs to be aware of their talents and the future work
opportunities available to them, and is designed to support and prepare young people for the world
of work; considers it important that the educational experiences of young people prepare them for
the world outside the classroom; acknowledges the work of Carrongrange High School in helping
ASN students to achieve their potential; further congratulates everyone involved in Burn Unlimited,
and wishes them the very best for the future.

and aspiring to make our towns and villages better, safer and fairer places for all, as well as
focusing on a plan to “build back better” by rethinking the economy to tackle the environmental

local community, highlighting the level of community development required to support
sustainability commitments across the community.

*S6M-00576 Willie Rennie: Teacher Recruitment—That the Parliament condemns the actions of
the Scottish Government and Fife Council, which have reportedly resulted in many trained
teachers in Fife, including newly-qualified teachers, being left without a job this August, despite
successfully passing through the interview process; considers that those actions will have a
detrimental impact on the lives and livelihoods of many trained teachers, deter future trainee
teachers and that similar situations have created uncertainty for thousands of newly qualified
teachers, experienced teachers and nursery teachers across Scotland; understands that a
petition, which has been created for residents of North East Fife and calls on the Scottish
Government and Fife Council to create more permanent teaching posts to end the prospect of
high teacher unemployment, has garnered the support of almost 1000 people already; further
understands that many teachers have come forward to support the campaign, and that there
are calls for decisive action to create more teaching posts to end the prospect of high teacher
unemployment, the casualisation of the teaching workforce and ensure that pupils benefit from the
talents of everyone in education.

the university's staff have made to the study of the writing of Scotland by students from the UK,
Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan, the United States and many other countries, as well as
the work that the university does, through the Centre for Robert Burns Studies, to promote and
develop an understanding of Burns globally, his value to the Scottish economy and to regional
growth and development, and congratulates the university's staff and supporters, including major
