Fruity wines for summer’s end

TYRRELL’S HUNTER VALLEY
SHIRAZ 2017
Hunter Valley, New South Wales, Australia
13990 (XD) 750 mL $24.95 2

TASTING NOTE: A brother to the ’18
Hunter Valley Semillon, crushed and
destemmed, open-fermented, pressed to
large-format used casks. This is a rich yet
tightly managed wine, placing all the
emphasis on fruit, precisely that which
should be done, especially in a year such
as this. If you buy it now – and you should
– put not less than 50% in the cellar, and
have a glass on me, recalling it only cost
$25. Gold Medal Hunter Valley Wine
Show. Special Value. Score: 96 (James

ASHLEY MARY LIMITED EDITION
M DE MINUTY ROSÉ 2019
AP Côtes de Provence, France
575316 (XD) 750 mL $26.95 2
This rosé was produced using the direct-
pressing method, which sees grapes
grown specifically to produce rosé rather
than being an offshoot of red wine
production. You can expect to discover a
floral, bright wine, with tones of fresh
orchard fruit, orange citrus and mineral.
Serve with fish, shellfish or chicken dishes.

THE
PRICE
IS RIGHT
Not all wines are created equal, and a low price tag doesn’t
mean a wine of lesser quality. The Vintages buying team are
always on the lookout for wines under $20 that punch above
their weight class – wines like the Submission Cabernet
Sauvignon from California and the Oak Bay Pinot Noir, both
of which are characterful expressions of their regions and styles
but carry lighter price tags than many of their peers.

PERFORMANCE
APPRAISAL
When a wine is highly rated by a respected reviewer it will catch your
eye, and when that high score is paired with a low price, as with the
Cameleon Organic Cabernet Sauvignon, it’s like love at first sight.
Similarly, wines that have established a reputation for consistently
earning high scores will make you feel extra confident when you reach
for them. The last 10 vintages of the Rocca delle Macìe Famiglia
Zingarelli Riserva Chianti Classico (2008-2017) have been
awarded ratings of 90+ from the world’s wine press.

SMART
STORAGE
Even if you’re not looking to cellar top-flight
Bordeaux for 40+ years, you want to store
your wines so that they’ll taste their best when
you open them.
Here are some basics to keep in mind: Screw cap wines can be
stored upright, but wines sealed with a cork need to lie down to keep
the cork from drying out. Keep your wines out of direct sunlight; they
need dark and consistently cool spaces. Also, avoid areas with high
humidity or vibrations, like near the furnace or fridge. Closet shelves,
basements, storage areas in condos, and even garages (if they’re
cool and dry) are all suitable for short-term storage. There are also
temperature-controlled cabinets available in a variety of sizes – just
remember they’re intended for storing wine, not chilling it to serving
temperature, so you’ll still need to chill some wines before you serve.

PRÉCIS
We live in a world of instant information; most of us carry more
computing power in the palm of our hand than was available to NASA
when Apollo 11’s lunar module touched down. But even so, access to
information is no substitute for the personal touch. Product Consultants
are a passionate group of product experts that work in many
Vintages locations (look for their white shirts!). Highly trained and
knowledgeable, their understanding of wine comprises personal
experience and a rigorous wine education. From regular tasting
sessions, they cultivate an intimate knowledge of their own store’s
inventory, as well as fostering a familiarity with the entire Vintages
portfolio, allowing them to zero in on just what you’re looking for. Be
it advice on your wine cellar or your very first wine purchase, they can
assist you, and even give you the confidence to explore outside of
your go-to regions, styles or price points. They’ll help you find the
perfect wine for that special dinner, gift, or just a casual weeknight
meal on the patio. When it comes to navigating the universe of fine
wine, Product Consultants are your ground control.

My attraction to wine began while I was working in a
Portuguese restaurant in my hometown of Johannesburg,
South Africa. My first job in Canada was with the LCBO
in Ottawa. It gave me the opportunity to enroll in a
sommelier course offered at the local college and further
expand my knowledge in wines and spirits. My husband
has family and friends in France and when we visit, we
always include wine regions on our itinerary. I’ve also
been able to visit Niagara, Prince Edward County, the
Okanagan Valley, Portugal, Spain, California and, of
course, Stellenbosch when I return home. I love sharing
my wine knowledge with customers and my travel has
been a great help, especially when it comes to food-pairing
suggestions, as I can speak from personal experience.
I know I’ve been successful when someone returns as a
