After the experience of World War One, the newly founded Red Army identified
a need for heavy artillery pieces ranging from 152mm to 280mm. Despite the fact

that the young Soviet state of the 1920s did not possess any major heavy industry,

several different artillery pieces on a standardised gun carriage was outlined, first

as the Heavy Artillery Duplex (with a howitzer and a gun sharing the same design
ri

of carriage), but in the mid-1930s the idea was expanded to a “Tripleks” (triplex) by
adding a mortar sharing the same carriage design. This approach was to reduce the
time needed to develop the systems and to ease mass production.
The Soviet High-Power (Heavy) Artillery Tripleks would finally comprise the 203mm
B-4 (B-4MM/B-4BM) and B-4M howitzers, the 152mm Br-2 and Br-2M guns, and
the 280mm Br-5 and Br-5M mortars, whose development stretched over 25 years.
The B-4 in its utmost refinement, the post-war wheeled B-4M (capable of firing a nu-
clear projectile) is today still considered an inactive asset in the Russian Federation’s
nuclear reserve arsenal.
This publication is a powerful statement covering the development history, the vari-
ants within the high-power artillery triplex, the wartime service and the technology
of the most recognisable and impressive Soviet artillery weapon of the Great Patriotic
War, simply called the B-4.

The Soviet T-34 Tank as Beutepanzer and Panzerattrappe
in German Wehrmacht Service 1941-45
Beutepanzers, captured foreign tank designs in service with the Wehrmacht, played a much more
influential role in German Panzer deployment and tactics than previously thought. While the bulk
of Beute tanks were relegated to hinterland policing and anti-partisan duties, it was the hundreds
of Soviet-built T-34s in German hands that were supporting Panzers in the medium tank and tank
destroyer roles in combat everywhere along the frontlines in the East.
For the first time, this book sheds comprehensive light on the German Panzerkampfwagen T 34 –
747 (r), and underlines this detailed research with hundreds of photographs of the German T 34
in action. Unlike other publications so far released on the topic of Beutepanzers, this monograph
focuses on the hardware rather than on the organisational paperwork of unit designations,
readiness reports and unit deployment histories. It is consequently highly pictorial, showing tanks
in service, their Soviet technology and production batches, as well as their German modifications
and markings and it looks at the life of their crews. Furthermore, it outlines the T-34’s development
in the Soviet Union based on the most recent discoveries. As it is crucial to understanding the
astonishing extent to which the T 34 was used in German service, and what an immense and
important impact it had, the background of the German Beute principle is highlighted in an
extended introduction.
Another major chapter in this book is devoted to T 34 Panzerattrappen dummy tanks that, to a
hitherto unknown degree, were most influential in tactical anti-tank training and tactical doctrine
for the Wehrmacht. The extent to which these T 34 dummies were used strongly underscores the
thundering impact this Soviet medium tank had on the German side. The Panzerattrappen require a
similarly extensive introduction in this book. Dating back to Kaiser and Reichswehr days, it allows
readers to fully understand why ‘wooden T 34s’ played such a decisive role in German land warfare
training.

German Panzers and Allied Armour in Yugoslavia in
World War Two

When the Yugoslavia theatre of operations in 1941-45 is mentioned, the first description that comes to
mind is Bandenkampf (anti-Partisan warfare). And truly, more than any other theatre, fighting in the
Balkans was among the most irregular and bloody of the whole of World War Two. This publication
aims to close a vital gap in documentation of this campaign by providing the first comprehensive
account of armoured vehicles and their respective units deployed there.
Combat in Yugoslavia also meant an exceptionally large number of combatants were involved. There
was the German Wehrmacht, Waffen-SS, German Police, Italian Army, Soviet Army, British Army
and, last but not least, various local ethnic groups fighting on one side or the other. All these were
equipped with the most amazing and astonishing assembly of armoured vehicles of any theatre of
operations in World War Two. Vehicles ranged from early German Panzers, German Beutepanzers
captured in previous campaigns in France and Russia, uniquely outdated Italian tanks and tankettes,
to the most modern Soviet and American equipment deployed later in the war. And as if that were
not enough, this colourful gathering is furthermore enhanced by improvised armoured vehicles and
armoured trains.

Three Panzer-Sicherungs-Kompanien (armoured security companies) were created from
existing units during the summer of 1943 to be employed in case of Italy’s exit from the war.
From September 1943, they were used to disarm the Italian Army and later to fight partisans
in areas of northern Italy, Slovenia and Croatia. In the spring of 1944, the three companies
became part of a newly created tank unit, Panzer-Abteilung 208 (armoured unit number 208).
This unit remained in northern Italy until the end of the year, when it was re-equipped with
new weapons and sent to the Hungarian front.
From late December 1944, the Abteilung was engaged in heavy defensive battles west of
encircled Budapest, and in February 1945 it was involved in one of the last successful German
offensives, conducted against the Gran Soviet bridgehead. In March 1945, the Abteilung
was renamed I. Abteilung/Panzer-Regiment „Feldherrnhalle“ and fought its last battles in
Hungary, Slovakia and Moravia as part of Panzer-Division „Feldherrnhalle“ .
On 232 pages the book recounts in detail the little-known history of these units, based on
extensive archive research and contributions from former unit members. It contains 380
extremely rare photographs (most not published before), document reproductions, graphics
and maps.

British Military Trucks
in Wehrmacht Service
Vehicles captured around Dunkirk, in France, Belgium, Greece and North Africa
- Service on the Eastern Front, in the West, South and with the Afrikakorps
Captured Beutefahrzeuge of British manufacture were a significant addition to Germany’s
military efforts in the later war years. Without these trucks, many stemming from the Battle of
Dunkirk, the German war machine would have been much less capable of waging Blitzkrieg
against the Soviet Union from 1941.
While Operation Dynamo, the evacuation from Dunkirk in May and June 1940, made
possible the escape of more than 300,000 French and British soldiers, they had to leave all
their heavy equipment behind. All in all, the BEF lost around 65,000 vehicles, many of which
returned to military service on the German side and doing their duty on the Eastern Front.
Other sources for the German Wehrmacht to lay its hands on British trucks to supplement its
own forces were Operation Demon in April 1941, the British evacuation from Greece, and the
campaign in North Africa from February 1941 to June 1943.
This publication offers for the very first time a comprehensive overview on the various British
Trucks in Wehrmacht Service, covering well-known models and makes such as the Bedford
and the Morris-Commercial GS trucks in the 8cwt to 3-ton range, the heavy Scammell
Pioneers and AEC Matadors, specialised vehicles such as cranes and field cars as well as
many rarer makes, rarities and oddities.
A special chapter also grants an overview on the Canadian-built vehicles of the British Army
that served with the Afrikakorps.

The role of the Kraftrad (motorcycle) in the German military at the time of World War One was primarily as a dispatch
vehicle as it could go on small roads, bypass traffic jams and they were also faster than most other means of transport at
that time. Motorcycles could also be used for scouting road conditions in front of truck columns, and serve as emergency
transport.
As with passenger cars, there were no military-type Krafträder in the German Army at the outbreak of war. All came from
impressed civilian stocks. Heeresmodelle (army models) of motorcycles began to appear from 1915-16.
This publication, for the very first time, grants an extensive written and pictorial overview on the impressed civilian
motorcycles as well as the later army models of the Imperial German Armed Forces in 1914-18. Covered entirely with
hitherto unpublished photographs are the types of the two main manufacturers, Wanderer and NSU, as well as impressed
German types and confiscated foreign makes. Additional chapters describe the use of military motorcycle sidecar
combinations, machine gun armed motorcycles, field repair workshops and the uniforms of the military dispatch riders.

The Soviet ‘Giant of the Eastern Front’ – Development, Production Batches and
Combat
Nach Mitternacht am 22. Juni 1941 wurden die sowjetische 34. Panzerdivision,
disloziert in Gorodok südwestlich von Lemberg in der Ukraine, und die anderen
Einheiten des 8. Mechanisierten Korps in Alarmbereitschaft versetzt. Die gesamte
schwere Brigade mit ihrem 67. und 68. Panzerregiment und weitere Einheiten
auf Korpsebene machten sich auf in den Großen Vaterländischen Krieg, ihrem
Schicksal entgegen. Zwischen dem 24. Juni und 9. Juli 1941 gingen dabei alle (!)
T-35 der beiden Regimenter binnen nur etwas mehr als zwei Wochen verloren.
Trotz seines geringen Gefechtswertes im Jahre 1941 hatte der Mehrturmpanzer
T-35 in den 1930er Jahren seinen Auftrag, auf Paraden die eigene Bevölkerung von
den Fähigkeiten der Sowjetunion unter Josef Stalin zu überzeugen, voll und ganz
erfüllt. Gleichzeitig gelang es ihm, durch seine schiere Größe und beeindruckende
Bewaffnung, auch westlichen Militärs die Macht des “roten” Panzerbaus zu
verdeutlichen.
Vorliegende Publikation zeigt mit weitgehend bisher unpublizierten Fotos erstmals
umfassend die Geschichte, Technik, Baulose und den schicksalhaften Kampfeinsatz
der sowjetischen “Kolosse der Ostfront” in einer westlichen Publikation auf.
Zusätzlich wird erstmals auch die Nutzung des T-35 in der Wehrmacht
dokumentiert.
After midnight on 22 June 1941, the Soviet 34th Tank Division of 8th Mechanised
Corps was put on alert. The T-35 tanks were readied to move and bombed up on the
training ground of the unit’s home base at Gorodok, southwest of the city of Lvov in
the Ukraine. The whole heavy brigade with its 67th and 68th Tank Regiments and
other corps-level units faced their fate in the Great Patriotic War. The T-35s headed
towards the enemy and the two regiments lost all (!) of them between 24 June and 09
July, in barely two weeks.
Despite its limited value in combat in 1941 the multi-turreted T-35 had perfectly
80 Seiten - Durchgehend mit 177 Schwarz/Weiss-Fotos, fulfilled its task to convince the Soviet population of the vast capabilities of the Soviet
2 Farbfotos, 20 Grafiken und zwei 1/35 Maßstabszeichnungen State under Iosif Stalin in the 1930s. Its sheer size and massive armament did also not
bebildert - Deutscher Text fail to leave a deep impression in the minds of Western military leaders.
This publication for the first time covers the full story of the flawed T-35 ‘Giants of
80 pages - Illustrated with 177 black&white photographs, the Eastern Front’, their development, technology, production batches and the fateful
2 colour photos, 20 graphics and two 1/35 scale drawings - combat history, illustrated mostly with hitherto unpublished photographs and many
English Text graphics.
Additionally the use of the T-35 in the German Wehrmacht is documented.

Im Herbst 1976 führte die U.S. Army die Übung REFORGER 76 durch. Deren große Besonderheit war die Teilnahme der 101st (US) Airborne
Division an zwei Feldübungen auf Korpsebene in Deutschland (Gordian Shield und Lares Team), wobei die Fallschirmjäger der Screaming Eagles
den gepanzerten Einheiten wertvolle Schwerpunktunterstützung lieferten. Gordian Shield wurde in Hessen in der Zeit vom 6. bis 11. September
durchgeführt, während Lares Team vom 11. bis 17. September in Franken stattfand. Insgesamt waren an Gordian Shield 36.000 Soldaten, 6.000 Rad-
und 2.500 Kettenfahrzeuge beteiligt. Lares Team wiederum umfasste 44.000 Soldaten sowie 8.000 Rad- und 3.500 Kettenfahrzeuge.
Vorliegende Publikation zeigt in eindrucksvollen Fotos die Kampffahrzeuge und Fallschirmjäger im gemeinsamen Manövereinsatz.
In the autumn of 1976, the US Army conducted REFORGER 76. Exceptional during this exercise was the participation of the 101st (US) Airborne Division in
two corps-level field training exercises in Germany, with the airmobile forces providing valuable support to the armoured formations. FTX Gordian Shield was
conducted in Hesse during the period 6-11 September, whereas FTX Lares Team took place in the Franconian region of Bavaria from 11-17 September. In
total, Gordian Shield involved 36,000 troops, 6,000 wheeled vehicles and 2,500 tracked vehicles. In turn, Lares Team included 44,000 troops, as well as 8,000
wheeled and 3,500 tracked vehicles.

Das Waffensystem Panzerhaubitze stellt seit der Gründung der Bundeswehr das
Rückgrat der deutschen Artillerie. In den 1950er und 1960er Jahren dominierten
noch die US-Systeme wie M 7, M 44, M 52 und M 55, die mit wenigen Modifikationen
übernommen wurden. Bereits mit der Einführung der M 109 im Jahre 1964 änderte
sich dies jedoch, und deutsche Wehrtechnologie floss in die Modernisierungen mit
ein. Der Höhepunkt dieser Entwicklung wurde ab 1998 mit der Einführung der in
Deutschland gefertigten Panzerhaubitze 2000 erreicht, die bis heute im Einsatz steht.
Diese Publikation dokumentiert alle diese Systeme im Text, mit Auszügen aus der TDv,
mit Gliederungen und in zahlreichen Einsatzfotos.

The Panzerhaubitze (armoured self-propelled howitzer) is the backbone of the modern
German Army’s Corps of Artillery from its creation in 1956 up till today. In the 1950s and
1960s the German Artillery was dominated by Panzerhaubitzen of U.S. origin: The M 7,
M 44, M 52, M 55 and finally, from 1964, by the M 109. From 1998 the German-made
Panzerhaubitze 2000 was fielded.
This publication shows the armoured self-propelled howitzers from the M 7 to the
Panzerhaubitze 2000 with many hitherto unpublished photographs, excerpts from
technical manuals and comprehensive written documentation.

In der Verteidigungsplanung der NATO im Kalten Krieg kam den drei deutschen
Korps eine Schlüsselrolle bei der Verteidigung der Bundesrepublik Deutschland zu.
Als mögliche Einfallstore für die hochgerüsteten Warschauer Pakt Panzer-Armeen
standen im Focus der Verteidigungsbemühungen: die Norddeutsche Tiefebene
mit dem I. (GE) Korps, das „Fulda-Gap“ mit dem III. (GE) Korps und die Mittel-
und Hochgebirgslandschaften Süddeutschlands mit dem II. (GE) Korps. In den
1970er Jahren führte jedes deutsche Korps abwechselnd eine Heeresübung durch.
Vorliegende Publikation beschreibt detailreich in Wort und Bild die drei Volltruppen-
Heeresübungen Großer Bär 76, Standhafte Chatten 77 und Blaue Donau 78 mitsamt
dem eingesetzten Fuhrpark der Bundeswehr und der teilnehmenden alliierten
Verbände.
‘Battlefield Germany’: The three corps of the German Army had a key role in NATO’s
defence plan for West Germany during the time of the Cold War. Missions of the
different corps focused on possible main points of entry that might be used by well-
equipped tank armies of the Warsaw Pact: I. (GE) Corps was responsible for the north
German plain, III. (GE) Corps for the Fulda Gap and II. (GE) Corps for the low
and high mountain ranges of southern Germany. In the 1970s, in turn each of the
German corps conducted a Heeresübung full-force field training exercise (FTX) with
participating Allied units from the US, UK, Canada and the Netherlands. This is the
story of three of these major FTXs and the military vehicles involved.
